About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Pennsylvania Dutch Country – September 16th Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on September 16, 2010 by Rick AnkrumSeptember 16, 2010

[iframe http://connect.garmin.com:80/activity/embed/49298208 465 548]

I have traveled to Washington D.C., Philadelphia and Manhattan since my last ride. Today I rode in the hilly Pennsylvania Dutch country around Lancaster and Strasburg, PA. This is the most hills I have ridden in quite some time as you can see in the elevation data below. Amish farms abound and I passed at least a dozen Amish buggies and saw several farmers working in their fields.

The weather was challenging with the temperature when I left the Fulton Steamboat Inn was 56 degrees which is normally below my cutoff but since this is special I rode anyway. Thankfully I brought a long sleeve jersey with me and leg warmers. I forgot to take my sunglasses which was a mistake; not because the sun was out but because the cold air was causing my eyes to water. It was particularly bad on one downhill section when I was going so fast I could not see too clearly due to eye watering and I had to apply the brakes. It was partly cloudy and later in the day it rained. Wind was only 2 mph from the ESE.

Today’s ride statistics:

  • miles 20.35
  • riding time 1:25:50
  • average pace 4:14 min/mile
  • average speed 14.2 mph (with all of the hills I am surprised it was this high)
  • max speed 33.4 mph
  • average cadence 67 rpm
  • max cadence 102 rpm
  • elevation gain 1071 ft., elevation loss 1072 ft.
  • min. elevation 295 ft., max elevation 837 ft.
  • September miles 164.82
  • YTD miles 3909.37

Below are some pictures of the area I rode south of Lancaster and Strasburg. I forgot to take my camera during the ride so these pictures are of the same area but from later in the day when we were searching for covered bridges and following the directions.

How I Spent My Rainy Tuesday Evening
from Biking In Dallas by Christopher Curnutt
Not everything I own is old or vintage, I have a modern Trek FX 7.2 which is a “fitness” bike that I have slowly converted to a urban utility bike.  I’ve dumped way more money …

Biking in the city | The Daily Texan
I’m a UT graduate myself, and I’ve stayed in Austin because I love this town. Much of its appeal lies in the fact that Austin is such a beautiful, convenient and relatively safe place to get around by bicycle. Unfortunately, as these past few weeks remind me, some UT students are unaware of the bicycle’s growing importance here — and a few are downright hostile. I’d like to clarify some things about bike transportation, encourage y’all to stay alert on our multi-use roadways and, ideally, use them in multiple ways yourselves. …

Fishy sub-24 hour ebay ads? Deal of a lifetime or stolen bikes …

If so please let me know so we can deal with some shit. According to my source there were about 60 bikes listed earlier today and now ALL of them have been removed. If this is theft then this might even rival the antics of the bicycle …

Tue/Thr Popsicle Ride
PBA Ride Rules
A goal of the PBA is to increase the enjoyment of group cycling by encouraging our members to take
responsibility for their own safety and the safety of their fellow riders. Here are some rules we think
will help. 1. We follow the instructions of the ride leader
• To hear the instructions, we do not wear any sort of headphones, earbuds, or other soundmaking
devices
• We do not ride “off the front” of the ride leader (generally out of sight or hearing)
– unless we have informed the ride leader, and…

Back on the bike, but I have a long way to go . . . | Texas Tailwind
by Ben
My cycling sabbatical is finally over. After almost 3 months, I’m back on the bike. However, I have a long way to go from a “fitness” perspective. I’m actually going to do a field test soon with my power meter to see just how much fitness I’ve “lost”.  I’m also going to stick to my Paleo/Primal diet, so I’ll post updates for how I adjust my diet around training and on-the-bike eating. Riding for the next few weeks won’t have any specific goals while…

Tour de Longneques – Sept 11 2010 edition
from Don Bynum’s Blog
Having made the ride from Llano to Castell several times alone, then having talked my best friend Eric Brewster into doing it with me in July, the ride has sorta begun to have a life of its own.  In August we were joined by our high school classmate Gil Jones, Eric’s colleague Tom Collins, Gil’s colleague David Nantz, and my old friend and colleague Doug Miller, bringing the ride to 6 souls, two of which came from a couple hundred miles away. Then came the September 11th Tour de Longneques…
