About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Texas Hill Country
501 Old Kyle Rd.   Wimberley, TX
There’s nothing like riding your bike in the hill country or floating the Guadalupe River on a summer day, along with great Texas BBQ. Shammies N’ Koozies – Ride & Float combines these summer pastimes and gives you the best of both worlds! You can choose a 40 or 65 mile, fully supported bike ride from Wimberley to the Guadalupe River (at the Rockin’ R River Rides venue). Once you finish, it’s time to refuel with some BBQ, then grab a tube and enjoy a relaxing 2-hour float down the river.

The Crows and I – July 4th Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on July 4, 2010 by Rick AnkrumJuly 4, 2010

The plan for today’s ride was to start at 6:00 AM to beat the possible rain. After the first three days of July were dominated by the rain from Hurricane Alex I wanted to get a ride in otherwise I will get behind in my monthly goal. I punched the start button on the Garmin Edge 305 at 6:04 AM. Actual sunrise would be 6:24 AM and twilight sunrise was 5:57 AM so the daylight was there but not full. After all of the rain the humidity was very high. One thing I noticed was all of the crows out surveying the road kill and other stuff they like to eat. I chased one group done a street as I approached their food. They gave me a chorus of caws as they flew off. After that I came across several other bunches of crows. During the day I usually don’t see that many of them.

Being a Sunday and a holiday may have influenced the number of people who were out which was few or less. There is one intersection where the traffic light trip mechanism does not detect bikes. Usually I have to wait for a car to trip the light but today the traffic was so light I ran the red light. As I was winding through the various subdivisions and was turning onto FM1960 East I saw a group of 4 riders coming to the west and entering the street north of where I was turning east from. I saw several other riders so for a moment I was seeing more riders than cars.

After going east and turning back towards home (I needed to get back in time to go to church) I noticed moisture gathering on the front edge of my helmet. This was with full sunshine by now and no rain in sight. My only thoughts were excessive humidity or leftover rain from yesterday’s soaking. I think it was the humidity.

Tomorrow is a holiday so I plan on an early start again but I will probably shoot for 6:15 AM to allow for a little more sunlight.

Today I learned from my wife that good friend is retiring from his bad job on Tuesday. This is great news for him. No longer will he have to put up with the Dilbert type of management. Congratulations to Ronnie Johnson!!

Today’s ride statistics:

  • miles = 26.12
  • riding time = 1:41:53
  • average pace = 3:54 min/mile
  • average speed = 15.4 mph
  • max speed = 20.0 mph
  • average cadence = 80.4 rpm
  • max cadence = 102 rpm
  • climb 147 ft., descend 139 ft., max elevation 99 ft.
  • July miles 32.29
  • YTD miles 2598.95
