About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Texas Bicycling Blog and News Roundup for June 8th

Fredericksburg Road Race
from Mike’s Bike Blog
This past Sunday saw me compete in the Fredericksburg Road Race for the first time. I’d heard good things about the course, that it was hilly and challenging. Oh and for the record it’s not in Fredericksburg, but 23 miles outside of town in Doss. We had a full field in the 35+ 4/5 with 72 preregistered for the race. The course is billed as hilly with cattle guards and low water crossings and a rolling enclosure. So as long as you stayed between the follow car and the wheel truck you had the whole lane to race, which is good cause most…

Dodging the Monsoon – June 8th Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on June 8, 2010 by Rick AnkrumJune 8, 2010

The last two days have seen monsoon conditions at times during the day but fortunately the rain has stopped and the roads dried of by the time I got home from work. This evening’s ride was pretty tame. Mostly cloudy skies, 81 degrees and a 10 ESE breeze. Humidity is high given all the rain we have had. Despite the rain I think we are still short for the year. This reminds me of 1974 when I moved to Houston. I thought I would spend the evenings at the pool after work but rain seemed to appear each afternoon around 4 or 5 to make the pool not so inviting.

This morning on the way to work I stopped at the HEB grocery on the Katy Freeway to pick up some Gulfwax to replace the wax I have been using for a year or so to wax my chain. I thought it would be a rather simple stop but it ended up having 4 or 5 stockers trying to find where the Gulfwax had been moved. Eventually after several cell phone calls the wax was located and I was on my way. Now I have to heat up the Fry Baby to get the old wax loose.

Today’s ride statistics:

  • miles = 23.89
  • riding time = 1:37:40
  • average pace = 4:05 min/mile
  • average speed = 14.7 mph
  • max speed  20.4 mph
  • average cadence = 77.8 rpm
  • max cadence = 102 rpm
  • climb 196 ft., descend 172 ft., max elevation 98 ft.
  • June miles 191.26
  • YTD miles 2232.01

The following story was provided by my coworker after he completed the Spindletop Spin in Beaumont, Texas this weekend.  The Spindletop is a 600+ rider event covering multiple distances in genuine Texas refinery-land.  The story seems an appropriate reminder to put safety first as we increase our miles and get comfortable in our bike saddles.

New Saddle Makes A Difference – June 7th Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on June 7, 2010 by Rick AnkrumJune 7, 2010

The new saddle arrived today. I was thinking about waiting until tomorrow to put it on the Mercier bike but I went ahead and did it this evening. I am glad I did. The comfort was quite enjoyable. This is the Douglas Booty Luv II Saddle from Colorado Cyclist.

Douglas Booty Luv II

In the past I was not a big fan of the cutout going down the middle of the saddle but after the first ride I have to say I will hold my judgment. So far the saddle is very comfortable.

Earlier today there was heavy rains around the eastern part of Houston but by the time I got home from work the streets were dry. I did get a few rain drops while I was out riding but the sun was shining at the time. Partly cloudy skies, 85 degrees and a breeze at 7 mph from the SE. Not bad for riding.

Today’s ride statistics:

  • miles = 27.14
  • riding time = 1:51:00
  • average pace = 4:05 min/mile
  • average speed = 14.7 mph
  • max speed = 19.6 mph
  • average cadence = 78.9 rpm
  • max cadence = 105 rpm
  • climb 162 ft., descend 177 ft., max elevation 102 ft.
  • June miles 167.37
  • YTD miles 2208.12
