About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Bicycle  Patrol | Fort Worth, Texas, Police Department
from www.fortworthpd.com
The Fort Worth Police Department began its bicycle patrol on Friday, April 16, 1915, after Police Commissioner Hurdleston ordered 13 bicycles from the Cromer Cycle Company.

According to a Fort Worth Record newspaper article several months later (the bicycle squad) “became a terror to hobos, criminals, arson fiends, etc.  In addition, they have guarded the homes of the people of Fort Worth while their occupants have been absent on business or pleasure.  These men silently ride over their beats, making no noise, their lights blinded, and many times in the shadows of buildings, ever on the alert to protect property and prevent crime”. …

As a Central Texas resident, driving to the Panhandle for a mountain biking excursion didn’t seem to make much sense. Why bother with an achingly long drive when we are blessed with a multitude of diverse trails in and …

How Old Before I Fold?
from www.roadbikerider.com 6/10/2010 newsletter
Q:  I’m 44 and in the best shape of my life. But I wonder if I’m about to start losing it as I close in on 50. How many more years can I maintain my present cycling fitness? — Barry C.

Coach Fred Matheny Replies:  At 64, both Ed and I are still hanging in there, although recovery time has certainly increased over the years.

We and some roadies we know managed to keep improving into our 50s. In fact, Ed and I each rode a 40-km (25-mile) time trial faster than ever at that age, and we’d been racing the event since our 20s. So I believe you still have lots of good years to look forward to.

In preparation for my talk on “Aging and the Cyclist” at a medical conference, I did quite a bit of research on this subject.

Studies show that although sedentary people lose their ability to consume oxygen (VO2 max) at a rate of about 1% a year after age 40, active people lose only 0.5%. And competitors who continue a long-term vigorous training program might lose only about 0.25% annually. …
