About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

by DALE ROBERTSON
Copyright 2010 Houston Chronicle
There are some “pleasant surprises” ahead for urban cyclists by the end of the year, says Dan Raine, Houston’s bicycle-pedestrian coordinator. But, so as to not get expectations too high, he won’t be anymore specific except to add that paving improvements on certain routes…

Drought Is a Threat But Not to Bicycling, May 6th Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on May 6, 2010 by Rick AnkrumMay 6, 2010

Yesterday the SCIGuy weather blog in the Houston Chronicle stated that with the current weather conditions and the forecast of little to no rain over the next week, eastern Harris County will approach drought conditions. Now as bicyclist I have to say the weather we have been having in southeast Texas has been fabulous for biking. Farmers and homeowners’ yards have been taking the hit while bikers have had no rain to stop or slow the riding. This evening’s ride was no exception. The temprature is a little lower than yesterday at 85 degrees or so. Supposedly the SSE 14 mph wind will increase the humidity but if it did I cannot tell it. The scattered clouds were no threat and help the heat be moderate.

Today’s ride statistics:

  • miles = 23.00
  • riding time = 1:37:23
  • average pace = 4:14 min/mile
  • average speed = 14.2 mph
  • max speed = 20.1 mph
  • average cadence = 76.2 rpm
  • max cadence = 103 rpm
  • climb 218 ft., descend 208 ft., max elevation 99 ft.
  • May miles 152.56
  • YTD miles 1552.37

Kick Your Car Habit! « It’s Time To Ride!
by cartertx
As an incentive Bicycle Sport Shop is hosting the Austin Commuter Challenge, a city wide competition, that rewards participants when they trade car trips for bike trips with prizes and awards. However, I still get excuses from people regarding why they can’t ride their bikes. For most it’s the Texas heat. If you are not already a committed commuter, pedaling down the road in the heat of the day can be a bit discouraging. Well, no more excuses people! …

We had a full weekend at the end of April, we started by taking our Treck tandem to the German fest bicycle rally in Muenster. This is a great rally and your entry includes admission to the festival and 2 drink tickets for soft drinks or beer(Shiner Boch). We were going to ride the 65 mile route but with extreme winds and the many challenging hills we wussed out and rode the 42 miles, the upside being we got to the festival early. …

Supposed to Be My Easy Day But, May 5th Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on May 5, 2010 by Rick AnkrumMay 5, 2010

After yesterday’s extra miles I was planning on today to be an easier pace recovery day but the great weather got the best of me at times. With the temperature at 90 degrees, a gentle breeze at my back (S at 9 mph) I rode faster and harder than I would want to on a recovery day. It was nice even though I got a little later start than I wanted. I beat the sun home but just by a whisker.

Today’s ride statistics:

  • miles = 23.12
  • riding time = 1:39:47
  • average pace = 4:19 min/mile
  • average speed = 13.9 mph
  • max speed = 20.1 mph
  • average cadence = 74.5 rpm
  • max cadence = 100
  • climb 161 ft., descend 180 ft., max elevation 99 ft.
  • May miles 129.56
  • YTD miles 1529.36
