About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Salt for Warm Weather Exercise
Dr. Gabe Mirkin’s Fitness and Health E-Zine
May 2, 2010
This month, two major reports in medical journals claim that getting people to reduce their intake of salt will save lives, prevent heart attacks and markedly reduce health costs (Annals of Internal Medicine, April, 2010; NEJM, April 22, 2010).  That may be true for many people who do not exercise, but for heavy
exercisers and athletes, particularly those who are also vegetarians, it can cause cramps, fatigue, injuries and even death.
During World War II, Dr. James Gamble of Harvard Medical School showed that salt (sodium) is the only mineral that people…

MOVING TARGET: Cycling in Texas

It’s been three weeks; wow, what a long time since my last post. I’m having a hard time remembering places I’ve been, things I’ve done and people I’ve met.

I began riding again with renewed vigor. I’m looking forward to going to this year’s IMBA’s World Conference, being held in Augusta, GA, early next month. I’m flying over there, renting a car and will visit with my mother and check on the house in Skylake.

I arrived at Xtreme Paint and Graphics to get the needed bulkhead repair. James and the guys did a professional job. The coach…

Trinitiy Bicycles Presentation | The Path Less Pedaled
by Russ
We weren’t quite sure what to expect at our presentation at Trinity Bicycles in Fort Worth, but we were completely blown away last night. For a town that is so below the radar in terms of great bicycling cities, there was a sense that something was on the verge of happening. Laura and I expected 30, maybe 40 people at most to attend our presentation but we were completely dumbstruck when the numbers…

Get Back in the Saddle, April 29th Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on April 29, 2010 by Rick AnkrumApril 29, 2010

After four days of not riding I am Back in the Saddle Again. This brings back memories of watching Gene Autry in the Saturday western movies on TV. Black and white TV’s were the order of the day. I could watch 2 or 3 movies on a Saturday. This evening’s ride was warm with the temperature at 75 degrees and a strong SSE wind at 17 to 22 mph. I really did not notice the wind so much with being so glad to be biking again. I was in San Diego four days. I was rady to be back home in Texas and riding the range, well road.

Today’s ride statistics:

  • miles = 24.37
  • riding time = 1:42:25
  • average pace = 4:12 min/mile
  • average speed = 14.3 mph
  • max speed = 20.4 mph
  • average cadence = 75.8 rpm
  • max cadence = 100 rpm
  • climb 270 ft., descend 203 ft.
  • April miles 513.05
  • YTD miles 1399.80

Since we created the Real Ale Ride it has always been our intention to support the community of Blanco, the host city for the Real Ale Ride.   From day one the people of Blanco have rallied in support of this event and have been a joy for us to work with, providing cash sponsorships, discounts on logistical needs and sponsoring or volunteering at our rest stops. With the help of riders like you we have made donations to the Blanco Library project totaling $9,000 from the proceeds of the previous two year’s rides. …

Texas Department of Transportation: 100 gather, talk transit
Thursday, April 15, 2010 at 8:40am
Transportation officials who hosted a town hall meeting Wednesday night saw the largest crowd since they began hosting such events over the past two years.

More than 100 men and women showed up at the McNease Convention Center to chat one on one with city and state transportation authorities. Those with questions — which involved everything from resurfacing roads for bicyclists to how funds are dispersed — were able to make their queries from a podium in front of the panel or by e-mailing them through the TxDOT Web page, where the meeting was streamed live. …
