About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

The Dips of West Texas « Continental Drifter

I’ve spent my life travelling the country by car, and in that time I’ve seen things most people never get to see, yet traversing this nation from the saddle of a bicycle is an entirely new experience. When you’re on a bicycle you smell …

Despite Victory, Businesses Still Riled Over Bike Plan
by Austin Chronicle
Retreating from earlier plans to turn Nueces into a bike boulevard, city officials have opted instead to install bike lanes and “sharrows,” like this campus-area marking on Dean Keeton.
Nueces Blvd.
In the battle over the Downtown Bicycle Boulevard, it’s pretty clear that the business interests won. So why won’t they just declare victory and be done with it?

Opponents showed up in force at last week’s Urban Transportation Commission…

Cycling notebook: Surviving the BP MS 150
by Houston Chronicle
By DALE ROBERTSON
Congratulations are in order for everyone – all 11,000 of you, according the MS Society’s estimates – who survived the Saturday night deluge and made your way safely into Austin Sunday. There were many, many wonderfully inspiring stories out on that road, but one in particular, I thought, deserved a special follow-up.

In case you missed my colleague Moises Mendoza’s story in the Saturday Chronicle, you need to know about Liz Benavidez, who completed her third BP MS 150…

Wounded Soldiers Seek Growth at Warrior Games

… Alcivar is training for wheelchair volleyball, the discus throw and cycling. He’s come a long way since first arriving here for treatment and rehab. The 26-year-old Dominican Republic native credits adaptive sports for his progress so far and for his positive outlook on life.

A little more than a year ago, Alcivar weighed 280 pounds and was struggling to stay active. He was doing well with his recovery, he said, but learning to walk again wasn’t enough. He wanted to reach his pre-injury level of fitness.

A Ride to Liberty, April 22nd Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on April 22, 2010 by Rick AnkrumApril 22, 2010

Today was a ride to Liberty, County that is. With yesterday’s ride in the green grass I thought today I should move north a little and visit exciting Liberty County. Well I actually rode into Liberty County about 100 feet and then turned back to head home. The clouds were heavy and the wind was brisk at 18 mph from the SE. Fortunately the temperature was in the upper 70’s. At times I thought for sure I was going to caught out in the wide open and rain would get me but it did not happen. Red traffic lights did get me though. Every traffic light I came to turned red as I approached. Usually I get at least one green light. Since I was generally going into the wind this made for grinding starts when the light changed. I made it home without rain.

Today’s ride statistics:

  • miles = 32.43
  • riding time = 2:12:52
  • average pace = 4:06 min/mile
  • average speed = 14.6 mph
  • max speed = 19.8 mph
  • average cadence = 77.2 rpm
  • max cadence = 105
  • climb 281 ft., descend 303 ft.
  • April miles 442.27 (April 2009 miles = 580.35)
  • YTD miles 1329.03
