About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Bicycle Ride Today – Around My Area

Texbiker.net Posted on February 27, 2010 by Rick AnkrumFebruary 28, 2010

I was not expecting to be able to ride today so I did not plan on an organized ride but the bright sun and low 60’s degree temperature was too much to not ride. I did not see any other riders but this could be from the afternoon ride time. Again proper clothing was important since the cutting NW wind was quite cool when I rode through the shady places. I am hoping the weather warms up for next Saturday’s Gator Ride in Baytown. I did not get to ride there last year.

The numbers from today’s ride:

  • miles = 30.7
  • ride time = 2:06:17
  • stopped time = 5:03
  • average speed = 14.6
  • max speed = 20.3
  • average pace 4:07 min/mile
  • average cadence = 78.8
  • max cadence = 104
  • ascending = 304 ft., descending = 177 ft.
  • year to date miles = 461

Texas Tech University Calendar
This is the first edition of the Texas Tech Cycling Race. On Sunday, February 28th, we will hold the criterium portion of our race at Centennial Elementary School (1301 N Utica, just north of the loop and west of Quaker). A criterium is a short lap race (1 mile long) that is very fast and very spectator friendly. It is held over time and not distance, so the first person across the line after 30 minutes (or 60, depending on skill level) is the winner. This is a free event and the public is encouraged to attend and cheer on the competitors.

BILL CULLINS: When buying equipment, pricier isn’t always better
by San Angelo Standard Times
Have you ever thought about the relationship between fitness and marketing? Do you rely on your own intuition and common sense to purchase fitness-related products, or do you buy what the constant barrage of marketing hype tells you that you need?

To illustrate that point, I recently flipped through an endurance sports…

Ultra-Endurance racing: training to go the distance
If you’ve read my bio, you know that my favorite cycling discipline is ultra-endurance mountain biking, which has gained a lot of popularity in recent years because of its fabled races and seemingly super-human athletes.  USA Cycling defines Ultra Endurance as an event lasting over 4 hours, which includes the Marathon format (which is limited to 47-62 miles), ultra marathon and timed events such as 6, 12, and 24 hour racing.  This series of articles…

Team San Angelo: Race Across America?
by Bill Cullins
Most of us consider 30-40 miles to be a nice long bike ride. Not so for cyclist Dex Tooke of Del Rio – he’s planning to ride across America, west coast to east coast, solo and with very little rest time. Now, Dex isn’t your average cyclist. For starters, he’s 60 and thus considered to be a senior citizen by cycling standards. But more importantly, he’s an accomplished ultra endurance athlete with an impressive resume of long distance events…

Day 20: Van Horn, Texas, to Marfa, Texas « Just Another Bike Ride  …
by brendanpleonard
Lots of people have told me that what I would remember about this trip is the people we meet. Well, we had a blast today, a few miles out of Van Horn, starting with, “Are those bikes behind us?” and a few minutes later meeting Bruce and Dana, then playing leapfrog with them and chatting with them at our rest stops all the way to Marfa, Texas this afternoon.

Bruce and Dana are retired teachers from Tacoma, and are taking on…

Blog hiatus of sorts | Road Rash
By Jason Whaley
Road Rash. A guy. On a bike. Exploring Central Texas. And beyond. … Being off the bike stinks for several reasons, including the fact that I cannot attend or be a part of the wonderful cycling events and rides around town. I do not want to cheat readers by just re-posting stuff from other sources, so until I am fully capable of doing what I love to do, this blog might not be as complete as in the past. I will keep everyone up to date on my progress and return to the …
