About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

IMBA Trail

Sid Richardson Boy Scout Facility

When we checked into the Sid Richardson Boy Scout Facility last Friday, I entered uncharted territory. As a kid I had never been to summer camp, so the idea of sleeping in cabins and eating family style in the dining hall was exciting to me. Once settled, the weekend of trailbuilding festivities started out like any typical group situation; people joining together for a common purpose. …

From lurid Lycra to earth-toned tweed « Jim’s Bike Blog

I’m not holding my breath about the tweed ride phenomenon catching on in Fort Worth, Texas, where I live. I fear that dandies might be frowned upon in these parts. Leave a Comment. Filed under Americana, Cool stuff, Urban cycling …

Longview Freeze Your Fanny 100k or “Look Mark, another freaking hill?!?!”
by www.wheelbrothers.com
I used to live in Longview in the mid 80’s so some of this route was pretty familiar, they changed the course from last years run around Lake O’ The Pines. Temperature started in the upper 30’s and ended around mid 44 degrees although there was an annoying 10-15 mph north wind which made it feel colder.

Day 19: Sierra Blanca, Texas, to Van Horn, Texas « Just Another …
by brendanpleonard
We woke up at 6 a.m. to an inch of wet snow on the ground, and decided a short day was in order, since on Wednesday the weather here is due to return back to normal. The motel owner gave us a ride to the breakfast restaurant in Sierra Blanca, as well as a couple who had stayed at the motel last night. After breakfast, I found out the couple had flipped their car on the interstate near Sierra Blanca last night. That snapped me out of my I Can’t Believe It’s Snowing…

Texas Bicycling Blog and News Roundup for February 22nd

Select ride comments from the Active.com forum for the 8th. Annual Humble Lions Bike Ride Reviews
evaq wrote: “Improved registration check-in at site, start was on time, super traffic enforcement support by local police departments.  It was nice to have lunch provided afterwards. Everyone who helped was courteous and friendly. …”

RiderDale wrote: “I must disagree with the other reviews.  Normally I will not give a charity ride a bad review, I just will not participate in their ride until I see reviews mentioning improvement.  The law enforcement was great for the first and last 3 – 4 miles, other than that they were non-existent.  I witnessed four near misses as we went through the neighborhood at the beginning.  When we went under Hwy 90 the traffic volume was much to high to not have support. …”

dolpenys39 wrote: “I disagree with RiderDale. This is my third year doing this event and this year was by far the best. Police were at every stop except for the last stop light and the road was clearly marked. …”

Tri-County Hill Topper Ride Reviews
from Active.com Forums
Selected excerpts:
GageParker wrote: “Rain is a bit of an overstatement for weather of February 21, 2010.  Even drizzle might be too strong.  Mist feels much more like the correct word.  I did 37 as well and did not initially understand why loop 2 went counterclockwise while loops 1 and 3 went clockwise. Once on 1457 I understood.  Possibly the only MS 150 recommended course that helps you overtrain a little bit for the MS 150.   Rest stop at Harmonie Hall was great.  Peanut butter and Jelly or Peanut butter and honey sandwiches made while you watched.  Also like the opportunity to enjoy a warm lunch and a cold beer after the ride.   Two suggestions:

1) next year I would like to be able to download a TPX version of the course to my Garmin GPS enabled bike computer.

2) May want to think about more portapotties next year because I will recommend this ride to all my friends looking for a way to practice on the hills from Day 1 of the MS 150.”

Lane B. wrote: “I’ve done this ride twice now and enjoyed it both times, even though it was raining there this weekend. The ride takes you through some beautiful country. Traffic was minimal so you didn’t have to worry about a lot of cars/trucks on the road. It’s definitely a ride to put on your list to do even if you do it once.”

Project O Week-Asking About that Bike Path on Tx Hwy 144 in …
by salon
Pretty obviously, last week I spent a significant amount of time looking at safety features for my bicycle. Where I live there is NO way to get to town without travelling on a highway, either Hwy 144 or Hwy 67. Therefore, I have coming to me a strobe tailight that I can use during the day but even better would be to have either something marked off as a biking lane on 144 or 67, OR a bike path. …

BPAC, Cycle Tracks & Bike Racks; oh my!
by bike friendly knox-henderson
North Central Texas Council of Government’s Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee (BPAC) held its first meeting of the year this past Wednesday. You may be wondering what NCTCOG and BPAC are, and what they have to do with Knox-Henderson, or any sorta bike friendliness.

NCTCOG is an organization of governments in the metroplex (known to planners as an MPO or metropolitan planning organization). …

BUT, if you make me pick between a bike ride on a brand new bike in some amazing place or advancing my career…uhmmm, I’m taking the bike ride. Off the top of my head I’m thinking about riding up and down the North San Diego coast…maybe even venture … Bike around Austin Texas during the SXSW festival…get my bike and my groove on at the same time! Or Spring Training…yeah, Spring Training! I could bike around Flroida or Arizona catching ball games and sunshine. …

Pace Bend Road Race
by tilford97
Pace Bend wasn’t the easy roll around race that it has been in the past, mainly because it was breeze/windy. And pretty hot for February. I’m not sure how fast the wind was blowing or from what direction, but it was windy enough to make the race hard. The Pace Bend race is 13 laps of a 6.25 mile course. There are two medium hills (big ring) and the rest just rolls. The start isn’t at the start line and a few guys, including Kristian House, missed the start. …

CycleDog: Devastation in Ronam, Texas
by Ed W
(The following does not reflect in any manner on the city of Manor, Texas, and its bicycle ban. Huh-uh. No. Not ever.)

This is a transcript from the ten o’clock news broadcast.

The city of Ronam, Texas disappeared overnight, seemingly swallowed up by the earth itself in a cataclysm of Biblical proportions.

Billy Bob Ignatowski, Ronam city manager, was fortunate to survive the devastation through an accident of timing. He was out of town for a church convention in Dallas when news of the disaster reached him. He has this to say for local television:

I was astonished and horrified to see that story about Ronam…

Welch’s Bike: The 1976 Schwinn Speedster
In Flamboyant Red, single speed, 24 inch frame. I call it “The Spirit of ‘76?.
Here is what it looked like when I bought it:

I found it here in East Dallas on Craigslist for $125.00. At the time, it was the most that I had paid for a used bicycle. The guy that I bought it from told me that he found it in his mother’s attic when he helped her move. It had apparently been owned by his step-father and had sat up there for almost 25 years. My version of one of those “barn find stories”. Check out the chainguard, it’s beautiful……..

Walburg Road Race, Walburg, TX
by tilford97
I thought we all were working together to make bicycle racing fun and safe. That detracted from the fun factor. Especially so early in the morning. There wasn’t the past wind. It never got over 15mph. But, after about a half a lap it started … Not the easy, sunny Texas weather I was hoping for. We’re racing 80 miles tomorrow at Pace Bend. I was 3rd there last year and have won it before. Should be interesting. Probably a little more aggressive racing tomorrow I’d guess. …

DFW Point-to-Point: Daily Violation

Discovering America on 2 Wheels: Leg 3A – Southeast Texas Loop
by Wills on Wheels
As I said in my “Data Dump” post, I’m working on a lot of different things right now… one of which is the concept of using my Trek 1500 Road Bike as my “touring bike” for the 1168 miles of Leg 3 from Santa Fe NM to Los Angeles / Hollywood / Malibu CA.

I’ll go into the details of what I’m doing on “equipment change / upgrade” in another post.

What I’m planning right now is an 8-day / 392 miles of cycling / 45 miles of hiking “warm-up / equipment checkout / get back in road shape” Southeast Texas Leg 3A. …

Magnolia Randonneur: Knee pain messes up 300k
by Michelle
Well, not the best cycling day.

Pat, Matt, Doug, LeRoy and I all started my Natchez Trace Lil Mountain 300 k in very cold 30 something weather. The forecast was for the temps to reach the low 60s. The start was very cold. I guess I was thinking 60 and not 30 at the ride start!

For whatever reason, I started having knee pain behind my knee at mile 12 of what would end up being a 159 mile ride. I am guessing I have started sitting lower on my seat and thus I am closer to the pedals which would cause pain behind the knee. I am also still having problems…

Bike the Borderline: 1000 miles across Texas …done!

There’s not much to say about today’s ride. The road was smooth, the journey was a short 32 miles and the wind was strong but thankfully didn’t hamper our progress too much. It has been a fascinating trip through the mountains, valleys, …

Bastrop State Park – My RV Talk

They tout a bike ride between the two parks, unless your in really good shape for a lot of up and down hills you may not want this ride. It is a road that is somewhat narrow but paved. But cars do use it too. …

Pedal Pushers: Allen Lane
by Roy and Christine
Allen Lane according to the road sign; Allen Road according to MapQuest. Take your pick because either route is a good one.
Allen Lane
Saturday was lining up to be a good day to ride. The temperature was to be mid-60’s and the wind 13-15. Since our average wind speed is 12, what was new? So a ride was called for 1 pm to start at the old Toni’s Restaurant outside of Christoval. Allen Lane is a 7.4 mile stretch of hills with grades ranging from 6 to 12% with one or two stretches at 14%. It is an ideal location to train for rides that have hills as a theme. …

Michael Pincus’s Cycling blog: Walburg cat 3s 72 miles
from Google Alerts – Texas cycling by Michael Pincus
Walburg , one of the most miserable courses in the state of Texas, this was my first race in 2010 and I’ve been looking forward for it for several months. I left for the race after school friday with my old teammate Rich. We headed up our hotel and slept pretty good considering we were watching figure skating. The morning of the race we packed up and drove off to a burger king for some breakfast yatta yatta yatta. …

Walburg Classic Road Race
Mike’s Bike Blog
I started the morning with a good breakfast of red curry chicken, rice and eggs. The race didn’t start till 11:20 so I had more than the 3 hour window to digest and build my glycogen stores. I also got to Walburg, which is only 32 miles from my house with plenty of time to pin on my numbers and warm up. I wanted to ensure I was ready to go from the start so I warmed up for 30 minutes getting about 267 kJ out of my system. Moving forward with other races I think I’m going to employ…
