About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

When Will the Rain and Cold End? Another Windtrainer Session

Texbiker.net Posted on February 11, 2010 by Rick AnkrumFebruary 11, 2010

Southeast Texas, and most of the state, is experiencing the opposite weather from last year. According to a weather blogger for the Houston Chronicle February 2009 had 75% of the days with a temperature above 70 degrees. Today marks the 11th day that we have not reached 70 degrees. My outdoor riding shows it. I was hoping to go to Harlingen this weekend for the Jalapeno 100 but a death in the family has taken precedence. So while they probably enjoy that elusive 70 degree weather I will be here wimping out in the coolness.

Tonight’s windtrainer session numbers: miles=11.22, max speed=21.1, avg. speed=15.0, avg. cadence=82 rpm, total time=44:48:22. The charts:

Fort Worth Commits to Radical New Bike Plan
by Streetsblog Capitol Hill (blog)

Supporters of Fort Worth’s new bike plan packed city council chambers last night. (Photo: Kevin Buchanan)
[A]fter a huge turnout of support from local bike riders, including the newly formed Bike Friendly Fort Worth, the Fort Worth city council unanimously approved the radical new Bike Fort Worth bicycle transportation plan. This plan will, among other things, massively increase Fort Worth’s bike infrastructure from its current state of just over 100 miles (emphasis on recreational trails) to nearly 1,000 miles (the vast majority of which will be on-street bike lanes and sharrow routes). Big, big news for Fort Worth’s livable streets movement. After the vote, the entire council chamber erupted in a standing ovation. …

Last night was a history-making night for Fort Worth’s transformation into a more livable, sustainable city.

At last night’s Fort Worth City Council meeting, a mass of bicyclists turned out in support of the Bike Fort Worth plan, which the council would be voting on adopting and implementing.  Groups from the newly formed Bike Friendly Fort Worth, the Fort Worth Bicycling Association, and the LMRA Bicycle Club joined individual supporters to express their enthusiasm over the proposal. …

Old Fat Man Adventures: A Big Loop
by Barney (The Old Fat Man)
Cold and rain and wind on the way for the next two days prompted a run around today. It seemed reasonable to hit a bicycle shop in Corpus and loop on down to Mustang Island and back to Rockport. The Truck had not been out for a run in forever so it was ready to stretch its running gear some. The rest of the wiring and house cleaning can be done while it is raining tomorrow. Good enough excuse for me anyway. …

Blue Bike Perimeter Ride: February 9, to Kirbyville, TX: Entering …
By Nancy Wright
It was really cloudy and only 38 degrees when I got up this morning. There was a lot of rain last night during a couple of hours of thunderstorms, but it was so windy that everything was dry this morning. They offered a small breakfast selection at the motel, but it was enough to get me going.

I followed US Route 190 for a good part of the day. There wasn’t much traffic on it, mostly logging trucks. The shoulder was wide and pretty smooth. The wind blew between 10-20 miles an hour from the north as I was generally headed west or southwest. …

Bike Fort Worth is the City’s comprehensive bicycle transportation plan for developing a friendlier bicycle environment.  Recommendations for supportive policies, programs and facilities are included to increase bicycle transportation within the City of Fort Worth.
The City has identified three goals to benchmark the success of the plan:
* Triple the number of bicycle commuters
* Decrease bicyclist related crashes by 10 percent
* Attain official designation as a Bicycle Friendly Community through the League of American Bicyclists

Team San Angelo: Wet and Winter
by Bill Cullins
I spent the longest winter of my life stationed at Fort Lewis, Washington. The weather there seemed to be 35-40 degrees and raining most of the time, and I’m starting to think that West Texas has become another Washington State. Our unusually wet and cool weather this winter is causing me to spend more time on the indoor trainer than usual, and I’m even getting some use out of the heavyweight polypro gear that I purchased while living…

Popping the Cycling Rally Cherry – Freeze your Fanny, Longview, Texas
When gas prices started sniffing five bucks, I bought a Vespa for my work commute. When gas prices went back down to two fifty, I sold it and bought a Trek.

In my mind, my first cycling rally was going to be on a nice, sunny, flat, still, 72 degree day in the spring. My brother-in-law, Chris’ riding clan, the Wheel Brothers, told me otherwise. “There’s a ride in February” Eugene said, “you’ll do that one with us.” I was still unsure just two weeks before the race, but a preview 30+ mile ride with Ron, Dieter, Chris and Eugene persuaded me to train for the rally and be ready. I went about 25 miles that day before I hit the wall, but I never stopped pedaling. I rode the trainer a lot and got in a 25 mile outdoor ride prior to the Freeze Your Fanny rally that took place in Longview, Texas. …

Weather Wins Another One, I Ride The Windtrainer

Texbiker.net Posted on February 9, 2010 by Rick AnkrumFebruary 9, 2010

The cold front sinks its teeth in as the temperature was well into the 40’s when I got home from work. This meant another session with Mr. Windtrainer. I am craving a few days of 60+ degrees. Tonight’s numbers: 11.15 miles, max speed 23.7 mph, avg. cadence 82 rpm, total time 45:14 minutes, avg. speed 14.8 mph.

Here is my setup:
