About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

NEVER MEET A LION LYING DOWN

Mountain Lion
With gloomy skies and temperatures in the 30s, Sunday wasn’t a fit day out for man nor beast. But the weather didn’t deter Houston lawyer Tina Nicholson from an afternoon run in Harris County’s Terry Hershey Park. And it certainly didn’t stop what Nicholson described as “a big cat” — possibly a mountain lion — from staking out a menacing spot on a bluff 20 feet above the bike trail. …

Who Needs Sleep?: Miles of Discomfort 50 mile MTB Race
by Bernice
I was very much looking forward to this mountain bike race. I was finally at full health and getting fitter so I was looking forward to a great long workout where I could really push myself and get in some good training. … I’m used to riding in sunny and 60-70 degree weather so the cold has been an issue for me in Texas. However, after surviving the 14 degree trail run race I did a few weeks ago, I was able to wrap my brain around the 20-40 degree temps for this bike …

Too Cold for Outdoors but Not for The Windtrainer Indoors

Texbiker.net Posted on February 1, 2010 by Rick AnkrumFebruary 1, 2010

My temperature fault line was not even close to being passed. 48 degrees and cloudy meant tonight’s ride was going to be indoors on the trusty Cyclops windtrainer. My trainer has a few years on it but it is in good condition. However, I should check the screw that holds the fan blade on. Tonight while I was sprinting the fan blade came loose and bounced into the bathroom cabinet door. Fortunately the energy was absorbed by a thick throw rug on the floor. I now will check the screw before each ride.

I rode 11.25 miles at an average speed of 14.2 mph. Ride time was 47:25 minutes. Here are two charts:

Risky business: Cycling in ‘new San Antonio’
from www.mysanantonio.com/news/columnists

Pedal Pushers: Beginners Page 13 The Wind
by Roy and Christine
It is appropriate that “The Wind” is number 13 of the beginners pages. I have disliked the wind from the beginning of riding. And it is always heartening to know that misery loves company. In a poll of riders, 10 times more voters said that wind is a tougher cycling challenge than hills. A Florida’s road bike maxim that I wish I could take credit for states, “For every uphill there’s a downhill, for every headwind there’s a headwind.” …

New Belgium Brewing Urban Assault Ride – Austin, TX

Texbiker.net Posted on January 30, 2010 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 30, 2010

Welcome to the New Belgium Brewing Urban Assault Ride!
We’re a bit biased, but we’re pretty sure the UAR is the most fun you’ll have on a bike.

First time? No problem! The event has a laid back atmosphere and most folks come for the fun (maybe the beer too;)

Think of it like a day at an amusement park – with the added bonus of a good ride, tasty beer, and lots of schwag!

All registrations include:
1. Entry into the race
2. Donation to the charities (Bicycle advocacy and environmental non-profits)
3. 100% cotton t-shirt – and we have women’s sizes too!
4. New Belgium Brewing drawstring backpack, stickers, and more schwag.
5. Snacks and drinks from our sponsors
That’s right! Beer and snacks are provided after the UAR! We’ll also have plenty of non-alcoholic drinks too!
6. Entry raffle prizes from our sponsors: Timbuk2 messenger bags, Clif Bars, Giro helmets and sunglasses, t-shirts, socks, tool and lubes, New Belgium gear, and much more
8. A huge post-event party with good music lots of contests and all of your new friends
