About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Pedal Pushers Blog and The Perfect Saddle

Texbiker.net Posted on January 24, 2009 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 24, 2009

Roy and Christine write an interesting post at their blog Pedal Pushers. I think each sport has its holy grail search. Runners search for the perfect shoe, golfers the perfect putter. For bicyclist I think it is the perfect and comfortable saddle. I cannot count how many saddles I have purchased during my almost 30 years of riding.

This excerpt from Pedal Pushers delves into this search.

“In past beginners’ pages, it has been easy to laugh at oneself over not knowing how to air up a tire or the initial trauma of wearing spandex shorts. But the current topic is a serious matter. Since a 130mm gel and air cushion combination chamois in bicycle shorts hasn’t yet been developed, we have to search for comfort elsewhere. And where would you search for seat comfort other than a bicycle seat. Keeping comfortable on the seat or keeping the seat comfortable is an on-going quest. To prove my point, raise your hand if you have more than one saddle per bike in the garage.”

Mellow Velo’s Blue Helmet Project

Texbiker.net Posted on January 23, 2009 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 23, 2009

In an earlier post I pointed out the Mellow Velo blog and named the author as “Chris”. It turns out the correct owner is Katherine (she commented on the blog posting here). Katherine wants to race.

According to her latest post, “The Blue Helmet Project is intended to turn me into a road racer. With the help of experienced riders who have gone before (but who aren’t too stuck up to look back and remember when they were in my shoes), the blog will become a storyboard of those unheard-of early days, when it sucks more than it rocks. Hopefully it can help and inspire other slugs in my dreamlike position. I promise to be as entertaining as possible.”

BikeTexas’ Shifting Gears Luncheon

Texbiker.net Posted on January 21, 2009 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 21, 2009

from austinbikeblog.org

“Building more roads to fix traffic is like throwing gas on fire.”

“Parking is not a constitutional right.”

“If an 8 year old can’t safely use a bikeway, then it is not a good bikeway.”

Today, BikeTexas (formerly Texas Bicycle Coalition) hosted a lunch time lecture by Dr. Enrique Peñalosa, the former mayor of Bogotá, Columbia with State Senator Wendy Davis, council candidate Chris Riley, staff from the City, TxDOT, Capital Metro, and CAMPO, and a who’s who of Austin bike activists as well as notorious road warrior Bob Skaggs in attendance.
