About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

BikeTexas SuperCollege Program: Teaching Bike Safety to our Future Teachers

Texbiker.net Posted on December 23, 2008 by Rick AnkrumDecember 23, 2008

from BikeTexas.org

As you know, BikeTexas operates the Texas SuperCyclist Program (a bike safety curriculum and certification training program for elementary P.E. teachers) as part of our mission to promote bicycle safety. But you may not know that we also teach the teachers of the teachers!

We do that through the SuperCollege Project – currently 15 colleges and universities incorporate the SuperCyclist curriculum into teacher certification training courses. The Texas Bicycle Coalition Education Fund trained university and college faculty instructs future teachers on how to implement the SuperCyclist Curriculum in their classroom. The materials and support are free to these institutions, and the Education Fund provides a DVD copy of the SuperCyclist Curriculum for each student teacher.

TMA to Give Away More Than 1,500 Bicycle Helmets

Texbiker.net Posted on December 23, 2008 by Rick AnkrumDecember 23, 2008

from the Texas Medical Association

by Pam Udall

  • WHAT: In an effort to protect children from head injuries, the Texas Medical Association (TMA) Hard Hats for Little Heads program will give away more than 1,500 bicycle helmets during Brain Injury Awareness Month in October
  • WHEN:  Oct. 1-31, 2008
  • WHERE:  Communities across the state (see schedule below)
  • WHO:  TMA physicians, medical students, TMA Alliance members (civic-minded spouses of member physicians), and county medical societies

Physicians feel too many children suffer head injuries from bike accidents. In fact, head injury is the most common cause of death and serious disability from bike crashes. Bicycle helmets can reduce the risk of head injury by as much as 85 percent, yet only about half of cyclists wear a helmet when they ride.

Fallen Brothers: Cyclists return to riding after tragic accidents

Texbiker.net Posted on December 23, 2008 by Rick AnkrumDecember 23, 2008

from The Brownsville Herald

By Kevin Sieff

When the car struck Eric Garcia, his body was launched from his bicycle like a lifeless projectile. Jose Antonio Garcia, his father and cycling partner, watched Eric fly through the air before landing on asphalt.

He was killed on impact – on a stretch of Expressway 77/83 that cyclists have long feared.

It had happened again. Another car accident. Another dead cyclist.

Five months earlier, one Brownsville man was killed and several more were injured when a drunk driver plowed into a group of cyclists in a Matamoros bike race. That accident devastated the local cycling community, leaving survivors with dislocated hips and serious concussions.
