B.J. Davenport, 84, Rides on His Birthday

B.J. Davenport pedaled his Trek bicycle to the Mineral Wells Rails to Trails Trailhead Sunday afternoon to the sounds of clapping and cheering of family and friends.

Decked out in a long-sleeved red shirt and blue denim coveralls, Davenport celebrated his recent 84th birthday by riding the trailway from Weatherford to Mineral Wells.

“I didn’t stop pedaling from Weatherford to Garner. … I took a break in Garner,” Davenport remarked. “Waited there about 15 or 20 minutes” before deciding to continue on. “We averaged 8 mph. At times, it was 3 or 4 mph because of the uphill climbs. I think next year I’ll try it from here to Garner.”

May Be Hot? May Be Not! Bike Ride – Aransas Pass, TX

The Bike Ride begins at 8:00 A.M. You’ll leave Aransas Pass Chamber parking lot going over the causeway toward Pt. Aransas turning around at the Lighthouse Trails park, travel by Conn Brown Harbor, then into Ingleside. You’ll pass the Naval station, then head South on Highway 361 turning North at Highway 35 on in to Rockport and then back to the Aransas Pass Chamber.

Have Your Registered Your Bike? You Might not need to

Mayor Bill White breaks this law. Thousands of innocent children could be implicated. You, dear reader, may be in violation and not even know it.

The city finally is cracking down on bicyclists’ rampant disregard of the registration law — by getting rid of the law.

City officials and bike enthusiasts all seem to agree that it’s a silly, outdated ordinance that is all but impossible to enforce.

The City Council could vote to strike the law from the books on Wednesday.

The law requires owners to register their two-wheelers at a local fire station for $1 and place a little license sticker on the bike.

“This is something that I think is sporadically done,” said Randy Zamora, the city’s chief prosecutor. “And I think the firemen have better things to do.”

Armstrong schedules Tour de Gruene on his comeback trail

Lance Armstrong’s cycling comeback will make a tour stop in Gruene this week.

Armstrong, a seven-time Tour de France winner, registered for the 25th annual Tour de Gruene Bicycle Classic and has signed up to compete in time trials on Saturday and Sunday.

“This is one of the only times people will see him race on American soil,” said Karen Rotzler, one of the Tour de Gruene’s founders. “You’d normally have to go to Italy to see him in a time trial.”

Armstrong, 37, registered online for the race on Friday. With his $30 registration fee, Armstrong also receives a T-shirt and a ticket to New Braunfels’ Wurstfest.
