About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Texas Kids Receive 4,000 Brand New Bike Helmets

Texbiker.net Posted on November 7, 2007 by Rick AnkrumNovember 7, 2007

from medicalnewstoday.com

Kids across Texas are safer from the threat of debilitating head injuries, thanks to free helmets and advice provided by the Texas Medical Association (TMA). TMA hosted a major statewide Hard Hats for Little Heads blitz during October, Brain Injury Awareness Month.

"This is wonderful, knowing we’ve improved the lives of thousands of children just this month alone," said David Butler, MD, a TMA physician leader who helped host a Hard Hats event in Austin. "It is so much better to protect children from potential devastating head injuries than to see them suffer needlessly from a fall while riding on their bike," adds Dr. Butler. He keeps a crashed bike helmet in his office to help illustrate the importance of head protection to his patients.

A view of the road from a cyclist’s perspective

Texbiker.net Posted on November 1, 2007 by Rick AnkrumNovember 1, 2007

Bryan Tollerene writes in the Friendswood Journal,

"I have lived first in Houston and now Pearland all my life. I have owned three pickup trucks and driven down a lot of farm roads. I have experienced the frustration of trying to maneuver around a group of cyclist on their road bikes first hand.

Two things happened that have changes my attitude towards cyclists.

First after years of playing golf and observing my waistline growing bigger and bigger I responded to an ad around 7 years ago from local gym Fitness Solutions to train for a mini triathlon. After participating in a few mini triathlons I continued my training focusing mainly on the biking. So low and behold I became one of those guys out on their in the road on the bike that I was always frustrated about getting around in my vehicle. The second thing I will save for later.

As I have become more involved with the cycling and met many great people through the Pearland Cycling Club and participating in the MS150 I have observed that most cyclists are concerned with riding safely out on the road with motorists."

MS 150 Bike to the Beach and Wind

Texbiker.net Posted on October 25, 2007 by Rick AnkrumOctober 25, 2007

According to Ken Hoffman’s column in the Houston Chronicle:

"Three thousand pedal-pushers raised a record-setting $1.6 million last weekend on the MS 150 Bike to the Beach from San Antonio to Corpus Christi.

I guess now would be a good time to retract my statement that Bike to the Beach is a hundred times easier than the MS 150 from Houston to Austin each spring."
