About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Gary Achterberg, Midwestern University’s Cycling Coach

Texbiker.net Posted on August 7, 2007 by Rick AnkrumAugust 7, 2007

from the Wichita Falls Times Record (full article)

Gary Achterberg’s first real 10-speed was a lime-green Schwinn “Super Sport.””By today’s standards, that thing is a tank. Nowadays if you’re going to buy a nice carbon fiber racing bike, you’re probably weighing in at 15 pounds,” said the director of cycling for Midwestern State University.

“You’re talking about half the weight (of the Schwinn) and about twice as many gears.”

Performance To Grow with Capital Infusion

Texbiker.net Posted on August 3, 2007 by Rick AnkrumAugust 3, 2007

from Bicycle Retailer (full article)

BY SEAN HONG

AUSTIN, TX—Hill Abell is on the frontline competing against Performance Bicycles’ retail outlets. So when Performance announced a multi-million dollar infusion of capital to launch another 90 stores over the next four years, he paid attention.

Early last month, Peformance announced that it had been acquired by private equity firm North Castle Partners based in Connecticut.

Abell is a Top 100 Retailer with two stores in Austin, a community he describes as a “very sophisticated cycling market. Performance has a store near his north Austin location and is about to open another one mile from his central Austin store.
