About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

UT Dallas’ Center for BrainHealth to Provide Bicycle Helmets for Kids

Texbiker.net Posted on March 17, 2007 by Rick AnkrumMarch 17, 2007

In honor of Brain Awareness Week, the Center for BrainHealth at The University of Texas at Dallas, in partnership with the Texas Medical Association, is donating 100 bicycle helmets to the Wesley-Rankin Head Start School for the kick off of the school’s annual three-day Trike-A-Thon.  As in past years, representatives from the Dallas Cowboys, including players and cheerleaders, also are expected to participate.

The event will take place on Tuesday, March 20, from 9 to 11:30 a.m. at the Wesley Rankin Center, located at 3100 Crossman in west Dallas.  The Dana Alliance for Brain Initiatives also collaborated on the effort.

More information.

Tour de Houston = Fabulous!

Texbiker.net Posted on March 17, 2007 by Rick AnkrumMarch 31, 2008

Just returned home from riding the Tour de Houston. Job well done volunteers, law enforcement, Houston Parks and sponsors. Whoever was in charge of the weather deserves extra kudos. Clear sky, a tail wind on the return leg from Clear Lake, make a biker’s dream. What else could a biker ask for. I even had Cheetos at one rest stop and a dessert of Rice Krispie Treat.

According to the announcer at the start, last year 2,500 riders, this year over 4,000. Thanks to Mayor Bill White and State Senator Rodney Ellis for coming up with the ride idea.

The 70 mile route (on the literature anyway) turned out to be 66 miles but this is a minor difference. I saw two people involved in crashes. One might have been serious and the other was road rash. The roads were uneven at times so that may have contributed. One minor rough spot was getting into the Theater District parking areas at the start. I drove by two or three entrances that were closed and the traffic was moving very slow. This may reflect the large turnout.

The opening miles took us through the east side of downtown. I have not been there in many years. The new townhomes, lofts and houses being built are changing the area. There are still some older buildings remaining. You can see gentrification taking place.

No pictures for this ride. With the slow parking I did not get to take any other than a few in the parking garage. They do not do the ride justice.

Bike makers take automatic transmission for a spin

Texbiker.net Posted on March 15, 2007 by Rick AnkrumMarch 15, 2007

This will probably will not appeal to serious bikers but News.com has the story. There have been other attempts to come up with an alternate transmission but the chain system is very efficient.
