About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

I’ve been chasing grace, but grace ain’t so easily found

Brent Wells | strava.com

I guess with the little bit of a threat of rain or wet roads, no one showed for the ride. However, Timothy Murphy did, and he rode like an absolute beast! Thankfully, neither one of us crashed like I did last time I rode with him?. As always, I thank my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, for allowing me to return to this sport, that I love, and for yet another safe ride.?

Riding with customers is also my job

Lubbock boy with autism gifted special needs tricycle after it was stolen

by: Claudia Puente | www.everythinglubbock.com

LUBBOCK, Texas – Several weeks ago, 11-year-old Jude Porras had his special needs tricycle stolen. It was the only bike he felt comfortable to ride, leaving him devastated when it was gone.

“He went looking for it, he went looking behind the driveway, he went looking behind the tree like it broke my heart because he was so sad. He just wanted to ride it and so he goes bike stolen, bike stolen, and he gets all sad about it,” said Roxann Martinez, Jude’s mom. …

Zwift Inside, Wet Streets Outside. Watopia Volcano Flat Route

Texbiker.net Posted on January 2, 2023 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 2, 2023

When I checked how many miles I rode last New Year’s Day I also saw how far I rode the next day, 17 Zwift miles. Since I was short 1 mile yesterday I wanted to make up for that with today’s bike ride. I planned to ride outside but after last Thursday’s ride and getting caught in the rain I didn’t want to chance that again today. As I watched the weather a brief light rain fell at home. Checking every so often I saw water dripping from the eves. That meant Zwift riding today. Looking at the upcoming events in the Zwift companion app I saw one group riding the Watopia Volcano Flat route but their pace was above what I ride. So I thought why not do a “free ride” on the route and the same distance. They were doing 3 laps for a total of 23.3 miles. This would put me above the miles for the first 2 days of 2022.

Looking at the weather radar after the ride my decision probably was correct with plenty of rain clumps showing. Water was still dripping from the eves too. Possibly morning rain tomorrow too. Another Zwift ride day.

In the Zwift companion app I saw I wasn’t alone, over 22, 000 Zwifters were online. I started at 11:11 AM. There was a .3 mile lead-in and about 7.6 miles per lap. Climbing was modest at 151 feet per lap but I climbed more, 495 feet total over 23.33 miles. The climbing was spread along the ride with rolling hills, no climb stood out. As I rode I listened to SiriusXM Sixties Gold and then switched to Pandora’s Lauren Daigle Radio.

The first 2 laps I tried to keep my cadence in the 80’s but the last lap I lowered that to the 70’s. Before starting the ride I used the Wahoo Utility app to do the weekly spin down for the Wahoo Kickr Core trainer. This seemed to make a difference in the effort. Before the spin down I was pedaling to warm up but had not started the ride and the effort seemed high. After the spin down it didn’t feel so hard.

New Year, New Goals. Checked On San Jacinto Bayou Greenway

Texbiker.net Posted on January 1, 2023 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 1, 2023

New Year’s Day bike ride to start 2023. I thought I would ride a longer distance than New Year’s Day last year but I was 1 mile short today. My road mile goal for January is 300 miles. Maybe the weather will cooperate. Today’s 29.1 miles was 10% of the goal. The year’s road miles goal is 7900 and Zwift miles is 900.

After getting home from church I waited for the fog to burn off a little more. While I was waiting I worked on the rear shifting on my Cervelo Caledonia bike to get it shift better from the #9 cog to the #8. I used the SRAM app to make the micro adjustment and I think it shifts quieter and without the grinding delay.

I rolled out on the ride at 12:48 PM riding my Lynskey Helix bike. I chose the Forest Cove – Oakhurst – Valley Ranch route. I want to see how the new segments of the San Jacinto Bayou Greenway looked since my previous ride December 9th when the workers were still cleaning up. The work looks complete as far as the City of Houston’s portion. Now Harris County needs to work on their section through Edgewater Park to US59. 3 cyclists passed me at the Marina Drive entrance to the greenway. I don’t remember seeing other cyclists there before.

With the fog covering the sun I wore shorts, a long sleeve jersey, and a short sleeve jersey over that. Wind was light from the west but it seemed to be stronger from other directions. My legs were ready for the ride and I built my overall average speed up to 13.9 mph before it settled back to 13.7 mph when I finished at 3:02 PM.

As the last week of 2022 and overlapping 1 day with 2023 I rode each day for a total of 177.1 miles. It took a mixture of Zwift rides and road rides. One ride i got soaked from the rain but fortunately it wasn’t cold. The two maintenance notes were when the new SRAM Rival Quarq cranksets were installed on the two bikes.
