About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Dallas Is Pedaling Toward a New Citywide Bike Plan

by David Seeley | dallasinnovates.com

The city of Dallas has a Bike Plan—but it was written in 2011. Now, after creating 67 miles of bike lanes across the city, Dallas is working on an updated bicycle master plan that lays out future bike and roadway improvement needs.

“We want to build connected bicycle routes that help you safely get from your home to your work, school, parks, and other destinations,” the city said in a statement.

Plans include an updated Bicycle Network Map, updated design standards for bicycle facilities, and a phased implementation roadmap that identifies “quick win” priorities. …

Day 32: Vanderpool to Kerrville: Hill Country, continued

Thursday November 3, 2022, 50 miles (80 km) – Total so far: 1,577 miles (2,538 km) We started out in the mist today. Very foggy as we left the cabin and immediately encountered a killer 2 mile hill. What a way to start the day! Luckily, we had our red blinkers going, and there wasn’t much traffic. Once we got to the top, it was rolling hills on a high plateau. Then as the fog lifted we descended into the Guadalupe River Valley. There are many draws along the way, and they don’t build bridges over them. Instead, you will see a sign that says “Dip” and you will drop down into the draw, where they have poured concrete ramps for the flood waters to flow across the road surface. There are rain gauge signs by …

Day 38 Merryville: Light of day – replay

Tuesday November 1, 2022, 53 miles (85 km) – Total so far: 2,101 miles (3,381 km) I had a good night’s sleep despite the traffic noise from the nearby freeway. The morning was as expected, cold and very damp but manageable since my clothes were dry when I packed them away last night. It was forecast to rain as we rode away but it was just a grey threatening sky and stayed dry.

I discovered where some of the trees from The Big Thicket end their days, a pallet factory. I was somewhat dismayed at the thought of these ancient trees being made into plain and ordinary pallets. I do hope Texas is harvesting these trees in a sustainable manner and replanting. I read up on The Big Thicket National park last night, its history is amazing but hardly surprising. The edge of the forest looks slightly inviting to go and …

Southern Tier Cross Country Tour

Day 38: Silsbee, TX to Merryville, LA

Tuesday November 1, 2022, 53 miles (85 km) – Total so far: 1,991 miles (3,204 km) We had a good time at Red Cloud RV park. We had quite a bit of time to relax and enjoy the evening. We met another rider who was riding the same route self supported who started 5 days later than us and had fewer rest days and some longer days than we rode.

We broke camp at around 8:45 after our morning ritual of taking down the tent and all of its contents, eating some breakfast and making our lunch. We rode mostly on US highways today and it was very flat. There were some good services along the route but it was a dreary day of riding.

After we stopped for lunch, the rain started to fall. Not a hard …

Day 30: Del Rio to Montell: Out of the Desert, into the Hill Country Tuesday November 1, 2022, 71 miles (114 km) – Total so far: 1,478 miles (2,379 km) We rolled out of Del Rio at about 8 AM. It had rained at night and early morning, so the pavement was wet, but the sky was rapidly clearing as we rode out of town. Serenaded by the fighter jets blasting off from Laughlin AFB for their morning training flights as we rode by. We were on busy US 90 until we got 25 mi out to Brackettville, then turned onto a quiet country road. We stopped at B-ville for a rest and snack. We spotted a picnic table on the school grounds, so decided to sit there for a while. Soon the local sheriff approached, telling us politely that we could not be there without permission from the school office. Bear in mind that we were about …

Day 31: Martell to Vanderpool: Hills and more hills

Wednesday November 2, 2022, 49 miles (79 km) – Total so far: 1,527 miles (2,457 km) Well, one thing I can say about the Texas Hill Country: it’s dern hilly! We had a nice breakfast with our WS host Alice, then as dawn arrived, we biked the 10 miles to Camp Wood. We got some lunch supplies there, and then began the first of 3 significant climbs for the day. Three big hills today, with inclines as steep as any I’ve ever ridden. (Steeper than Northern Rockies or North Cascades highways.) With rollers in between. So it was a …

Bike buddies

Dan – Thoughts from Huntington Place | dannagel1.blogspot.com

I may have a new bike buddy. Not trying to replace Don, my Saturday bike buddy, but as a fully retired guy, I find I have room in my schedule to ride several times a week.

Jerry is new to the Brays Bayou area, but has lots of cycling experience. He told me he wanted a 10 mile ride, no more than 8-9 miles an hour. Great. I’m there. We ended up with 12 miles, but we enjoyed the ride. I enjoy the company, and Jerry liked having someone who knows the route. I also find, for good, or bad, that when I ride with someone, my rest breaks are not as long as when I ride alone.

One of the things we talked about was …

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — The driver responsible for killing a bicyclist who was part of a Pride Ride event earlier this month has yet to be found, and Crime Stoppers is now offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to an arrest.

David Loredo peers out, watching cars pass on W. Dallas; the breeze ruffles the flowers and letters from loved ones that surround Shane McKinney’s Ghost Bike. Over a week ago, Loredo and other Pride Ride volunteers spent their evening cleaning the spot where their fellow rider had been struck by a vehicle to prepare for the ghost bike’s installation.

At the time of the crash, against Loredo’s continued requests, McKinney had not been wearing a helmet. McKinney was in the tail end of the group, and was hit among the other cyclists, which included his brother, Matthew. Loredo urges his riders to always have their gear, spare parts and be predictable in the moves they are making on the road. “There is always some sprawling, as I tell the riders to get …

Day 37 Silsbee: Light of day

Monday October 31, 2022, 60 miles (97 km) – Total so far: 2,048 miles (3,296 km) I had a lovely comfortable night’s sleep in my little cabin, home from home. We all decided to have a late, 8.00am, breakfast so as to not rush off from this haven of rest. It was the right decision to chill out and watch the sun come up. It was very cold and dew covered everything in copious quantities, I believe this is going to be the feature of most mornings going forward as we near the gulf coast.

Three weeks today we will have finished, I cannot believe how time has flown. Already, I find it hard to remember all the places we have been through, although it does come back when I read my journal which is one of the main reasons for doing it. I also try to pass on useful information to future crazy cyclists who pass this way, for me the whole point of this website.

If I had to sum up today it would be a very long straight road through a big wood, called The Big Thicket. Occasionally, I passed points of civilisation and farms with fields bounded by woods and a couple of rivers. Having said that, it was very fascinating place to travel through. The woods at a guess are natural since they seemed to be a mix of deciduous and evergreen trees growing randomly. There were some …

Monday October 31, 2022, 61 miles (98 km) – Total so far: 1,938 miles (3,119 km) Our last full day in Texas! We started a little later than normal as the Shephard Sanctuary was really nice. We stayed in the bungalow so we didn’t need to set up our tent.

A pretty unremarkable ride today. Other than it was really flat! Could have been Iowa in September. Trees are turning colors a bit. We made good time to the first town but there were no services so we went on to the next town a total of about 13 miles. There was a food trucl s we stopped for a breakfast taco.

Its Halloween so Kelly had to dress up as did one of our ride mates. Thats all the pictures we have from today.

Dog Sprint To Wrap Up October Bike Rides

Texbiker.net Posted on October 31, 2022 by Rick AnkrumOctober 31, 2022

The last 2 Mondays I rode in Watopia but today I rode in the real world. This was fitting to close out October biking. I waited later for the temperature to get to 70 and at 11:17 AM the bike ride began as I headed out on my Cervelo Caledonia bike. Making my way through Kingwood to the US59 northbound frontage road I stayed on it until Community Drive. Community Drive delivered me to Loop 494 where I continued north through a short construction zone passed the FM 1485 railroad crossing. The bridge over Caney Creek is still closed causing me to ride Payne Road back to the frontage road. Over Caney Creek I turned right onto Via Principale Parkway and into Tavola. Normally on my Kingwood – SH242 – Kingwood route I ride a short loop through Tavola but today I made it longer to get to Lilliput Farms. Lilliput Farms took me to N. Linnwood Drive so that I could connect to Railroad Ave. But on N. Linnwood a mid size black and brown dog spotted me and the chase began. There was a drainage ditch between him and as he ran through the grass but it became shallow enough for him to come across into the street. I saw him make the transition to the street and he was almost beside me. I pedaled faster in the 35×13 gears and he stayed close for about 100 feet until he stopped chasing. I knew this dog might be in the area from an earlier encounter on another ride on Railroad Ave. On that ride he ducked under the fence to chase me. No other dog sprint on this ride.

With the dog sprint done I headed to the frontage road again and to the SH 242 overpass over US59. No apparent change in the construction from what I could see. The work area is not very large and traffic flows through it smoothly. The southbound frontage road took me to Valley Ranch Parkway which I rode to Azalea Blvd. Azalea Blvd. was the way back again to the southbound frontage road which crossed through the FM 1314 intersection to the Auburn Trails entrance where I left the frontage road to the quiet space away from US59. Auburn Trails and then Oakhurst kept the quiet going. Through Oakhurst and onto Northpark Drive where I rode west for a few 10ths of a mile to Kingwood Place Drive. Kingwood Place brought me to Kellington and back to the noisy frontage road and the u-turn at Kingwood Drive. A short ride on the northbound frontage road and a right turn onto Kingwood Parc and I was again getting to a quiet place. From there I rode through Kings Manor into Kingwood and finished the ride at 2:22 PM riding 38.74 miles. Today was the second longest ride of the eight previous rides during 2022.

10-31-2022 YTD Bike Rides Kingwood-SH242-Kingwood Route

After seeing the temperature get above 70 before starting the ride I went back and changed my long sleeve jersey from thermal to regular keeping a poly long sleeve T-shirt underneath. On the road the first couple of miles was chilly but as I warmed up the jersey change was a good thing. Weather conditions: start 72 (humidity 65%, dew point 59), mostly cloudy, wind NW 5 mph; finish 77 (humidity 49%, dew point 56), mostly cloudy, wind variable 6 mph. The light wind helped me pedal strongly to SH 242 and back.

October 2021 I was on a bike for 30 days for a total of 958.27 miles. I exceeded my 651 road miles goal for October, passed my 800 mile virtual riding goal for the year with 35 miles extra and 2 more months. I need 37 miles to reach my 7,900 road mile goal for the year. October was a good biking month. My only organized ride in October was the Pineywoods Purgatory in Lufkin on October 1st. My goal for November is a modest 360 road miles. Weather changes and daylight saving time ends.
