About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Video: ‘We’re coming back stronger than ever’: Houston area bike group returns to streets after cyclist killed in hit-and-run crash

Bryce Newberry | www.click2houston.com

HOUSTON – Pride Bike Ride Houston returned to its weekly tradition Tuesday night, exactly two weeks after a hit-and-run driver killed one of their own.

Organizers said they had one of the largest group turnouts ever, as other bike groups joined them in pedaling from Montrose, to the Museum District, through Downtown, and back to the Heights.

“To be back on our bikes today, it’s very emotional, but at the same time, it’s so empowering,” said group rider Kacey Ketenbrink.

Shane McKinney, a 45-year-old father, was hit and killed during the group’s ride on Oct. 11. Houston Police said he …

Day 31: Johnson City, TX to Austin, TX

Tuesday October 25, 2022, 49 miles (79 km) – Total so far: 1,636 miles (2,633 km) Last night we had a brief thunderstorm and woke up this morning at 5 AM to howling winds. We started packing our stuff at that point since we figured we wouldn’t get any more sleep in the tent. We got dressed and headed across the road to an open gas station that had coffee and Mexican pastries. We purchased some yummy items and headed back to the campground where we huddled in the laundry room (really a laundry closet), ate our pastries and drank our coffee.

At that point, the other riders were getting up and breakfast was being set out. We picked through the breakfast, made our lunch and took down the tent. The only good thing about the howling winds was that the rain fly on the tent was completely dry. We headed out of camp around 8:15. It was a nice ride with some ups and downs but nothing too severe for the first 10 miles or so. We found a coffee stop at a …

Day 24: Van Horn to Marfa: Exquisite Oddities

Thursday October 27, 2022, 74 miles (119 km) – Total so far: 1,170 miles (1,883 km) We rode US 90 from Van Horn to Marfa, 74 miles on a road straight as an arrow, slight incline most of the way, through a huge wide valley. We are now in the Big Bend area of Texas. As we approached Marfa we saw evidence of local artists’ work along the highway, including a realistic looking Prada shop. Prada Marfa. A blimp-like object was visible for miles. Part of a weather station? No water or food anywhere along our route today, so we were pretty hungry by the time we rolled into Marfa. We had great salad, pizza, and beer at Para Llevar’s outdour cactus garden. Two 70+ mile days left the legs tired. We agreed to do fewer miles tomorrow. …

Real Concrete and Asphalt, Back From Virtual Riding

Texbiker.net Posted on October 26, 2022 by Rick AnkrumOctober 26, 2022

I left the virtual biking world behind on today’s bike ride on real concrete and asphalt. My Cervelo Caledonia rolled out at 11:18 AM heading north on the New Caney – Tavola – Valley Ranch route. It was a little chilly and I dressed differently than recent bike rides wearing shorts, a long sleeve jersey, and a short sleeve jersey over that. When I got up this morning it was 44 degrees and it took several hours to warm up enough that I could leave my leg warmers at home. The wind died down from the 37 mph gusts yesterday and sunshine ruled the sky with no clouds visible as far as I could see. Riding through the shade took getting used to but after about 15 minutes of pedaling I didn’t notice the chill as much. By the time I finished at 2:30 I was feeling comfortable even though the wind had a chill to it.

The route included the same streets as the last time going through the newest sections of Tavola and into Lilliput Farms. This time in Lilliput Farms I went a different direction at the stop to avoid bumpy Sycamore Drive. I think that accounted for most of the shorter distance of 38.76 miles versus 39.04 miles on October 21st. Also I didn’t ride into the shopping center in Valley Ranch today like I did on the 21st. Today was the 16th ride on this route in 2022.

Weather for the bike ride: start 70 (humidity 37%, dew point 43), clear, wind 3 mph; finish 74 (humidity 31%, dew point 42), fair, wind NE 7 mph.

Back in Kingwood as I rode on the greenbelt trail beside Kingwood Drive just east of Green Oak Drive I went around a bush and another cyclist was coming towards me dressed in a Cervelo kit. There wasn’t enough time to catch him with the GoPro.

Road construction on Loop 494 in two locations continued; just north of where FM 1485 goes over the railroad tracks and the bridge over Caney Creek.

Getting to know the UTSA Cycling Team

Mason Hickok | paisano-online.com

The Roadrunner Cycling team has been experiencing a resurgence, coming out of a state of limbo due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Cycling is an activity that can be considered both a hobby and a means to compete. The team at UTSA welcomes all types of skill levels. In October 2021, the team celebrated one of their cyclists as a national champion in a USA Cycling mountain bike competition. Miles Jones is the current president of the UTSA Cycling Team. The team is considered a club sport; thus, some funding does come from the Campus Recreation Center. In the spring, the team competes in the South Central Collegiate Cycling Conference (SCCCC) alongside other colleges such as Texas State, Texas A&M and Midwestern State University.

Jones described the …

Day 30 Johnson City: Many rivers to cross

Sunday October 23, 2022, 73 miles (117 km) – Total so far: 1,698 miles (2,733 km) Heavy rain and thunderstorms have been predicted today for over a week which would make today’s ride very difficult. The route takes us through some beautiful Texas hill country to Johnson city on quiet country roads but along the way the creeks that drain the area run across the normally dry roads. This is normal and local folk usually have large 4x4s. The dips between hills can become flooded with the slightest rainfall. There are signs everywhere warning of dips with running water. We came across these in New Mexico on day 15. So the scene was set for some serious water crossings.

The wind did blow last night and I had to re secure some of my tent pegs but the storm came to nothing. I awoke early and it was a light drizzle with a slight breeze. The storm was somewhere but not directly over us.

The country road we took was like riding on somebody’s private drive and I had to check at times it was the right route. There were lots …

Day 31 Austin: Racing in the streets

Monday October 24, 2022, 49 miles (79 km) – Total so far: 1,747 miles (2,812 km) The storm came very close last night. It did not drop any rain but the wind was quite vicious. Kelly and Adam thought about taking refuge in the laundry room but in the end decided to sit it out only to be awakened at 5:30 by what seemed to be the peak of the storm. I slept peacefully through all this commotion and even slept through my alarm because I had wax earplugs in which was necessary due to the close proximity of tents with occupants ‘sawing wood’.

Breakfast and coffee was a bit of a frozen affair avoiding the wind but we managed it and it wasn’t long before we all left camp and headed for Austin and a well deserved rest day.

The route today was planned for us by someone in the mapping section of the ACA headquarters in Missoula who had local experience of the roads into Austin. Again, this is one of the advantages of the trip. The route we took was undulating and typical of the Texas Hill country but moreover wasn’t too high or low and the road surface was incredibly smooth. At times I was buzzing along and felt as though I was in a velodrome, I had a very big smile as I pushed Bob ever faster. Recently, I seem to have been pushing gears that previously I could only have managed for a few minutes but now I can …

Day 23: Fort Howard to Van Horn: Another Beautiful W. Texas Day

Wednesday October 26, 2022, 77 miles (124 km) – Total so far: 1,096 miles (1,764 km) It was a perfect day for biking! Started out very cool (40F) but warmed up quickly as the sun rose. We had a great peaceful 16 mile ride on a quiet side road early in the day. Mountains of Mexico in sight. The rest of the day was on or next to Interstate 10. Mostly on a frontage road that paralleled I-10. It was a bit noisy from the trucks, but we mostly had the road to ourselves. The locals warned us about the mountains we would have to climb today. Pfft! They were but molehills, especially compared to what we climbed in CA and NM. (Texans do have a tendency to exaggerate the size of things. But, honestly, the grasshoppers here are gigantic!!) I had some wheel worries today. First, strange popping sounds started coming from my front wheel. I think somehow some …

Wahoo RGT Magic Roads Bumpy Start And Learning Curve

Texbiker.net Posted on October 25, 2022 by Rick AnkrumOctober 25, 2022

My email inbox contained an email from Wahoo announcing the Wahoo RGT update/upgrade starting today. After reading the email I went to the link to read more. Outside the temperature was below 60 and the wind gusts over 30 mph. Wahoo RGT offered a free 14 day trial and I signed up. I browsed the Wahoo RGT website and downloaded the desktop program. Looking around I saw a number of events and places to just ride. What interested me the most was the “Magic Roads’ where I could upload a GPX file from one of my rides (or someone else’s) and ride. I decided to give that a try, signed up for the 14 day trial and proceeded to get lost in figuring out how to create my Magic Road event.

The instructions were sparse to say the least. I sent an email to the address listed with the GPX file from my Forest Cove – Oakhurst – Kingwood ride last Sunday. From there I didn’t understand what would happen next. I didn’t know but I received and email from Wahoo RGT saying they “Our team will now start building all the details to make sure you have the best experience. Once we’re done you will receive a confirmation email. This usually takes us 5 minutes so check back here soon.” The problem I had was the Wahoo RGT desktop program took over my monitor screen and I couldn’t get to any other programs except by using the Alt-Tab keys. I had no idea they sent an email.

To create an event you click on a link in the desktop program which takes you to the RGTcycling.com website where you sign in again using my Wahoofitness.com username and password. I created the event using the route name I uploaded, not my name. Then I went back to the desktop program to try and find it. That was frustrating but finally it appeared in the upcoming events list. I selected the event and it opened but when I started pedaling nothing happened. I had not selected my sensors. I found that option in the menu but didn’t realize I needed to slide the white area to the right to connect the sensor. Once I figured that out after going back to the ride several times I finally saw numbers in the event and I moved on the road. Another email I received told me “The server for the event “Headwind_Time_Changed_My_Route_200_Mile_Week_Barel Quick Ride” is up and the users can join.” I probably should’ve waited for that email but I didn’t know that it would happen. I also got another email telling me “You signed up for the Headwind_Time_Changed_My_Route_200_Mile_Week_Barel Quick Ride event on Wahoo RGT.”

Now I rode the route. The scenery was not too different over the 20.4 miles, trees along the road, asphalt surface, white center line, and an occasional billboard about training. I left the resistance setting for my Kickr Core at 100% and it responded over the flat route I uploaded getting harder and easier reflecting the incline % and decline %. After all of the learning and lack of detailed instructions the ride went smoothly. I’m not overly impressed with Magic Roads but it does add variety. I will try one of the included routes before my 14 day trail ends to see how it works. There are not many people online, especially compared to Zwift. I didn’t know how to connect Wahoo GRT to Strava (I later found how) but I found a link to email me the GPX and FIT files to upload. The upload to Strava does not appear to include the map while SportTracks does show the map.

At this point Zwift will be my virtual riding platform. I edited the video cutting out the middle of the ride showing the start and finish.
