About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

What a great ride this morning designed by David Patterson to include PLENTY of climbing! The “Cowboy” I’m referring to in my ride title (which is a song by the late great Conway Twitty) is Michael Matt. He has become so strong in a relatively short time, and it’s great to see his dedication to our local bike shop owned by Brown ??360 ? . I am always most of all thankful to my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, for allowing me to return to this sport that I love, and for another safe ride with great guys (and even a few gals!)?

Wind And Smart Watch Gang Up On Me

Texbiker.net Posted on October 22, 2022 by Rick AnkrumOctober 22, 2022

The bikes got a bath before I set out on today’s bike ride. The water was pretty dirty afterwards and it might’ve lightened the Cervelo for today’s ride. I was going to need all of the help I could get for the ride. I was late getting out the door pressing the Bolt start button at 9:51 AM. To make for some of the miles I didn’t ride earlier in the week I decided to ride the Kingwood – Stroker Road – Kingwood route. I changed the order of the streets some riding on Kings River and Atascocita Shores to get to FM 1960 rather than on the way back. This meant riding through Walden on the return to Kingwood. I almost rode south on FM 2100 to Stroker Road to ride in reverse but I stuck to the plan and finished at 1:30 PM. This was the 5th bike ride to Stroker Road in 2022 and the 42.91 miles was below the average distance of the other 4 rides. If I had biked another 1.4 miles I would have reached my 651 mile goal for October. Next ride should take care of that. With the change in the streets I decided to not call the route Stroker Road – Huffman.

10-22-2022 YTD Bike Rides To Stroker Road
10-22-2022 YTD Bike Rides To Stroker Road

Road construction on FM 2100 north of Stroker Road moved me to the unopened south bound lanes from Stroker Road to the Crawfish Kings on the other side where I changed sides all the way to Huffman. At Huffman after I crossed the railroad tracks I started hearing this strange sound from my Galaxy 5 Pro smart watch. It showed the “I have fallen” alert with a countdown to sending a text message to my daughters. I tried to cancel that but it wouldn’t let me and sent the texts messages. I wasn’t sure what their reaction would be. I finally got it cleared and resumed my ride. Not too long after that one daughter called me but I didn’t answer because of the traffic noise. I pulled into a shopping center and answered when she called again. My other daughter sent me a text message which I answered telling her what happened. I’m not sure why the watch decided I had fallen. I rode over those tracks many times and with no alert. Maybe the railroad tracks and stopping for the light triggered it.

At the start of the ride the wind was around 5 mph but as I rode it seemed to increase. I noticed it more as I rode to FM 1960 on Kings River Drive and Atascocita Shores. Going over Lake Houston on FM 1960 the gusts from my right signaled the wind had increased. The weather forecast said the wind could 25 mph after the morning. I was okay riding east but when I turned south from Old Atascocita Road onto Ramsey Road the wind was so strong I shifted from the 35×13 gears to the 35×15 gears. With the change the wind was so strong I could only pedal at 8 to 9 mph until I neared Peters Road where a bunch of trees blocked some of the wind. Once I cleared the trees the wind came back with a vengeance. On Stroker Road the wind was from my left with sporadic trees interfering with it. When I reached FM 2100 the wind pushed me north all the way to FM 1960 but the ride west the wind wanted to push me around especially as I crossed Lake Houston. Riding to and through Walden the wind tried to get me. The 50mm rims were a target for the wind to move me around. On Pinehurst Trail Drive my direction changed to mostly north and the wind was from my left or rear the rest of the way. At the end of the ride I saw the wind was 15 mph with 27 mph gusts. No wonder the hard pedaling.

I stopped on Ramsey Road to answer a text message and took this photo. It also gave my legs a short break from the headwind.

Midtown by B Cycle

Dan – Thoughts from Huntington Place | dannagel1.blogspot.com

Again, I am running behind on my posts. This trip actually happened Monday, October 17.

I took the Park & Ride bus up Louisiana and got off around the Pierce Elevated. YMCA let me use the restroom. Hey, I’m almost 70, I don’t pass up many opportunities. My first intended stop was behind Randalls, but was out of service, so it good that I started at YMCA. Then I started meandering around Midtown, defined, apparently, by B Cycle, as East of Spur 527, South of Pierce Elevated, West of 288, and North of 59, except for Peggy Park, which became my bridge to Texas Southern University. Was that sentence too long for you?

I read the Historical Marker in the middle of Midtown. Way back when, the state fairgrounds …

Eastwood Home Tour

Dan – Thoughts from Huntington Place | dannagel1.blogspot.com

I’m getting behind on my postings. Part of the problem is I still haven’t figured the most efficient way to move photos from my iPhone, to the computer, and to Blogger. Se, for right now, I may leave pictures off, so come back in a few days, and I promise (pinky swear) to post photos.

After church on Sunday, October 16, I headed to Greater East End, as B Cycle calls it, or Eastwood as the civic association knows it. Old neighborhood, crossed by Polk, Telephone and Lockwood. This is an area I have been through with the Tour de Bicycle this month, and the paper had an article last week about a home show. 1935 is a common build date. Some architect converted the old Church of the Redeember into 45 affordable units, and four of them were available to see. A challenge for the remodel was that this is on the historic register, so the …

Day 26 Del Rio: Border guard

Wednesday October 19, 2022, 41 miles (66 km) – Total so far: 1,461 miles (2,351 km) We all had a great time last night, it was a much needed rest. Lydia, is one determined lady but yesterday had drained her somewhat and she decided she needed a drink. The photo says it all.

The campsite was on top of a hill with fantastic views. There was a great sunrise as we were all sitting down for breakfast which gave a good atmosphere. We stayed just a little bit longer than usual but we did have to get on the road. I would recommended it as a place to camp. Today is one of our shorter days at 41 miles to Del Rio so we left late at around 9.30.

As usual I had to get up a couple of times in the night which is a bit of a pain but also great to take the opportunity of gazing into the night sky at the brilliant array of stars. Whilst it is a place of beauty, it is also a strange place. We are very close to the Mexican border and at this point there is no wall. Last night they were strange strobe lights in the area close to the border possibly along it, I cannot figure out what this was all about.

The border patrol service has a big presence round here and they seem to be everywhere. The pastor’s wife in Sanderson said she believed last year they had apprehended 550 people who had illegally crossed the border. That doesn’t sound a lot for the …

Day 27 Camp Wood: Lucky man

Thursday October 20, 2022, 76 miles (122 km) – Total so far: 1,537 miles (2,474 km) Today we turned away from the border but more significantly the countryside changed to mostly trees and grassland. We would be entering Texas Hill country for real. The first 30 miles followed Highway 90 to Brackettville, where I stopped for a rather nice second breakfast. Manita’s is to be recommended, a friendly welcome plus excellent home-cooked food.

We also said goodbye to the union pacific railway which has never been far away since the start of the ride. It was funny when a train came the other way and I thought about it going through all the towns, wide open plains and mountain passes that I had passed through towards the Pacific where I started. It’s a love and hate relationship with these trains, nice to admire them with the long snake of carriages but it’s a real pain in the middle of the night when Casey Jones sounds his horn – three long, three short blasts.

In Brackettville, the route took US334 towards Camp Wood which is a country road with very little traffic and a good surface. It was rolling landscape dotted with large oak trees and open pastures at either side and at times I thought I could have been in the south of France but without the traffic. At one point, I was convinced the large trees at either side of the road were olives, but on closer inspection they were as …

Day 25: Sanderson, TX to Seminole Canyon State Park, TX

Wednesday October 19, 2022, 56 miles (90 km) – Total so far: 1,308 miles (2,105 km) A nice night at the church. We awoke to a bible study group that came in at 6 am. Good thing we needed to get up early for a long day of riding. Scheduled for 81+ miles.

The weather was great as we left Sanderson. Light winds and clear. A great day for riding. We had a few stops along the way and were 49 miles in by about noon. We stopped for lunch at a roadside picnic area. Then we were on our way for the final 30+ miles. Shortly after that, the wheels fell off the wagon.

We were headed down a hill and we heard a "pop!" and whooshing noise of the air leaving our tube. We quickly stopped to assess the damage. At first it seemed that all we needed to do was change the tube but as we inflated the new tube, we noticed that the sidewall had a gash in it that was not going to contain the tube. So we left the bike upside down and waited for the sweep. We also tried to contact the SAG van but had no service. Once the …

Day 26 : Seminole Canyon State Park to Del Rio, TX

Thursday October 20, 2022, 41 miles (66 km) – Total so far: 1,349 miles (2,171 km) After SAGing into camp yesterday, put on the spare tire from our leader. Its slightly defective but should get us the 41 miles to Del Rio where the bike shop has a replacement. Dinner was at J&P Bar and Grill in Comstock. That was was very welcome for all.

Since its only a 41 mile ride, we slept in a bit today. Breakfast wasn’t until 8:00 and we hit the road around 9:30 after packing up camp. Weather was ideal again with light winds, sunshine and nice temperatures.

Comstock was our first butt break of the day about 10 miles in. There was supposed to be a historical marker but we couldn’t find it. We stopped about 13 miles later for another butt break and a snack with nothing remarkable to see.

We made a short stop at …

Austin balancing need for bicycle traffic lanes, driver needs during upgrades

by: Erica Brennes | www.kxan.com

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Cyclists are being forced to dodge traffic, and drivers are unhappy about new bike lanes.

KXAN Traffic Anchor Erica Brennes looked at how the City of Austin is trying to balance the concerns of both groups while keeping the roads safe for everyone during upgrades.

Greg Anderson, aka Walkable Austin on social media, is one of the rare Austinites who gets around without a car. But not without frustration.

Two bicycling events will affect Galveston traffic this weekend

www.galvnews.com

The 15th annual Bike Around the Bay and the second annual Bike Around the Island begin Saturday.

The Galveston Bay Foundation’s two-day, 170-mile Bike Around the Bay kicks off at 7:30 a.m. at Houston Raceway in Baytown, with riders biking from the Galveston-Port Bolivar ferry landing to Harborside Drive to 25th Street to Seawall Boulevard, and finishing at 81st Street.

To accommodate the participants while they’re on Seawall Boulevard, the south-side parking lane and south-most traffic lane — the inside eastbound lane — will be restricted to cyclists only from 25th to 81st Streets.

Vehicular traffic will continue in both directions, however, traffic heading east from …

Day 19: Kingston to Hatch: Into the Rio Grande

Friday October 21, 2022, 51 miles (82 km) – Total so far: 872 miles (1,403 km) After a hearty breakfast at the lodge, we continued our descent into the Rio Grande Valley. Much of the ride today was downhill. What a change! We rolled into the river area, stopping for some food supplies at a camp store near Lake Caballo. Then followed the river 25 miles to Hatch. Lunch at the “famous” Sparky’s burger joint. They were lined up outside to order. The famous green chili cheeseburger was in fact very good. This is chili country. We saw many chili packing plants along the road, big trucks loaded with bright red chilis, and stands selling chilis and pecans. It’s irrigated farm land, also growing cotton, corn, lettuce, etc. We were wondered where to stay for the night. David went into the Catholic Church to ask for ideas, and the priest insisted we stay in the fellowship hall, so that’s where we will sleep tonight! …

Once I Got Free Of The Molasses

Texbiker.net Posted on October 21, 2022 by Rick AnkrumOctober 21, 2022

I was slow getting today’s bike ride started. It just seemed like was moving in molasses. Once I got free of the molasses I rolled my Lynskey Helix bike out and started the ride at 11:04 AM. The route was New Caney – Tavola – Valley Ranch for the 15th time this year. I again added the loop through Lilliput Farms and this time I made the correct turn to ride to Railroad Ave. to get back to Roman Forest Blvd. On Railroad Ave. a couple of dogs spotted me riding by their house barking with the small dog squeezing under the fence and onto the road but well behind me. In Tavola I rode in the newest areas again before exiting onto Roman Forest Blvd. I rode both sections of Brooklyn Trails that straddle Mills Branch Drive. I noticed the RV park at E. Martin Drive gained several more tenants. Maybe “snowbirds”. I was reminded that Sycamore Drive in Woodbranch Village is rough. Next time I will take the other streets in Lilliput Farms to avoid Sycamore. Because of the late start I didn’t finish until 2:13 PM.

10-21-2022 YTD Bike Rides New Caney-Tavola-Valley Ranch Route
10-21-2022 YTD Bike Rides New Caney-Tavola-Valley Ranch Route

According to the weather station the wind was 10 mph but as I rode west through various Kingwood Villages and Woodridge Forest it felt stronger than that. Once I reach the frontage road along US59 it became a nice tailwind helping me all the way to Tavola. On the way back to Kingwood I pedaled into the headwind most of the way. The open sections were the worst. I was glad I wore a long sleeve pol T-shirt under my short sleeve jersey because the wind still had a hint of chill whenever I was in the shade or a strong gust hit me. I was comfortable in the sun. Weather conditions: start 77 (humidity 59%, dew point 62), clear, wind SW 10 mph; finish 83 (humidity 45%, dew point 60), mostly clear, wind S 9 mph.

There were several times I should’ve changed from the 35×13 gears to the 35×15 as I rolled up to stops. I guess I was thinking of something else.
