About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Cycling Through COVID-19: Austin, Portland and Washington, D.C.

By Ralph Buehler and John Pucher | usa.streetsblog.org

This article is part of the “Cycling Through COVID-19” series from world-renowned cycling researchers Ralph Buehler and John Pucher and is published with permission from the authors. In this series, we’ll explore how 14 large cities around the world adjusted their cycling policies during the first years of the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as how those policies contrasted with their approach in the decades prior. In each, Buehler and Pucher also explore how each city’s plans for future investment in cycling inLeffrastructure and programs have been impacted by the pandemic.

Read the rest of the articles in this series as they’re published here, or check out the full paper in Sustainability.

Austin

With about a million residents (2.2 million metro), Austin, Texas is the most pro-cycling large city in the American South. From 2010 to 2019, the city expanded its network of conventional on-street bicycle lanes from 134 kilometers to 473 kilometers.. In 2012, Austin installed its first protected bicycle lanes, following Dutch design guidelines. By 2019, there were 265 kilometers of protected on-road lanes, neighborhood bikeways (bicycle boulevards), and off-road urban trails, which the city considers its network of especially safe and low-stress cycling facilities for all ages and abilities. Springtown’s annual bike rally set for next week

Madelyn Edwards | www.springtown-epigraph.net

Motorists, beware: A wave of cyclists is expected to be riding around Springtown and Parker County on Oct. 29 for the 13th annual All American Bicycle Rally, nicknamed the Bicycle Boo Ride.

Dr. Robert Moss, who coordinates the rally, hopes that wave of cyclists will amount to more than 200 riders. The rally had about 200 participants last year, and he wants this year to be even bigger.

“We’re shooting for 250 this year,” Moss said.

In addition to a higher turnout, Moss said he is also hoping for good weather on the day of the ride. The bike rally will happen rain or shine.

Ahead of last year’s bike rally, Moss said motorists should be aware of the bike ride and make sure to give cyclists plenty of space on the road.

The process to organize the bike rally takes about six months in advance to contact …

Day 25 Seminole Canyon state park: Let’s go, let’s go, let’s go

Tuesday October 18, 2022, 82 miles (132 km) – Total so far: 1,420 miles (2,285 km) Today is going to be our biggest ride of the tour so far, everyone was a little bit anxious at the map meeting last night including me. The ride yesterday was only 55 miles but felt like much more due to the headwind and we didn’t want a repeat today.

Everyone was up early and out on the road just before sunrise at 8 o’clock. I was in cold cycling gear but had lighter layers packed on the bike so I could change later since it was going to get warm today. It was a little sad leaving Sanderson, I hope it survives.

There wasn’t much headwind today, indeed very little wind at all and the road surface was quite good. So I decided to go for it and put some miles under my wheels whilst the going and was good. It was great fun as I flew down the road never dropping much below 20 mph. I climbed out of the valley I had been following all day yesterday and I emerged onto an open range with views which looked like infinity. There were no mountains to gauge the distance, it was something else. It wasn’t long before the road lost its customary telephone and power lines poles at the side of the road. No power or …

Big Bluestem Trail at Grand Park to open November 19

www.friscotexas.gov

(October 20, 2022) Following years of anticipation, the City of Frisco is introducing residents to Grand Park by opening Big Bluestem Trail. An inaugural trail walk will be held November 19 at 9 a.m. The trailhead for Big Bluestem is located off Cotton Gin Road, between Dallas Parkway and Legacy Drive.

“We’re so excited to welcome the community to start exploring this trail,” said Mayor Jeff Cheney. “Our city has aspired to develop Grand Park for many years. In fact, the idea of Grand Park is one of the projects that inspired me to run for city council. I believe this trail marks the beginning of developing a legacy park destined to become one of our city’s greatest attractions for residents, visitors and future generations.”

Named for a prevalent native grass, the Big Bluestem is a natural, unpaved 12-foot-wide trail that winds its way through undeveloped park land for 2.2 miles. Bois d’arc trees, wildflowers and other grasses complement the landscape.

“Keep in mind, Grand Park is a …

Back From Watopia To Ride Outside

Texbiker.net Posted on October 20, 2022 by Rick AnkrumOctober 20, 2022

After three days in the Zwift Watopia world I was back on the road for today’s bike ride. The weather warmed up to 71 as I rolled out on the ride at 10:52 AM on my Cervelo Caledonia bike. With the help of the plentiful sun I warmed up. Since it is Thursday I decided to ride my Atascocita – Walden – Huffman route with a short extension to Spanish Cove Drive on FM 2100. I finished the ride at 1:37 PM covering 35.64 miles.

I wore shorts, a long sleeve poly T-shirt, and a short sleeve jersey on top. That was a good combination because it was a little chilly in the shade. The wind was from the west which brought the warmer temperatures today. This made for an easy ride to Huffman but harder on the way back across Lake Houston. Weather: start 71 (humidity43%, dew point 47), fair, wind W 8 mph; finish 79 (humidity 38%, dew point 51), fair, wind W 12 mph.

Checking the AXS.SRAM.com ride report I used the 35×13 gears for 1:39:25 (23.6 miles), and the 35×15 gears for 38:08 (8.1 miles) with 17 RD changes.

By Sriya Reddy | www.dallasnews.com

Series of events will be held through Nov. 5 to discuss urban design, transportation

The city of Dallas is asking for public input on its Dallas Bike Plan update and ForwardDallas Comprehensive Land Use Plan through community workshops starting on Wednesday until Nov. 5.

ForwardDallas is a comprehensive master plan designed by the city to be a guide on how land citywide should be used. This will affect urban design, transportation and housing.

The updated bike plan will modernize the 2011 version. The Department of Transportation began the development early this year and is set to have a plan by late spring next year.

Kathryn Rush, chief planner with the city’s transportation department, said that right now Dallas has a …

Day 24 Sanderson: Lucky town, here’s hoping

Monday October 17, 2022, 56 miles (90 km) – Total so far: 1,338 miles (2,153 km) I had a good night’s sleep thanks to some wax earplugs, the railway track runs not far from the campsite and the trains run through the night blowing their horns.

As I got out of my tent I could see mountains to the north which were not visible yesterday when everything was covered in mist and low cloud.

As I was leaving the campsite and before I got on my bike, I checked the tires to make sure there were no goats head thorns in them. Sure enough there was one sticking in my front tire. I decided to pull it out, which resulted white sealant appearing where the thorn had previously sat. I needn’t have worried because within a couple of seconds the sealant did its job and the tire was okay with minimal pressure loss. Although I would have rather done without this, it did reassure me that my tire set up was good.

I passed through the old town of Marathon which seemed to be …

Driver was "messing with her sandwich" prior to crash that killed Kingwood boy

Dug Begley | www.houstonchronicle.com

A driver that struck and killed a boy last month in Kingwood was "messing with her sandwich," according to police, as she turned left and he rode his bike through the residential intersection.

No charges have been filed in Montgomery County related to the Sept. 26 crash, despite officials listing distraction as one possible cause for the crash. The case remains under investigation.

The woman, who lived in the neighborhood around Wagner Pond just on the Montgomery County line side of Kingwood south of Northpark Drive, told investigators she was driving along Kings Mill Lane, about to turn left onto Gallant Knight behind another vehicle. Once that first vehicle took the left, …

Marfa100 brings West Texas cycling community, visiting riders together for a memorable race

By Mary Cantrell | bigbendsentinel.com

Cactus Liquors team member Manu Fresno hands out cold beers to Marfa100 bike race finishers on Saturday in Marfa. Photo by Cody Bjornson.

MARFA — All manner of cyclists rode into town last weekend to participate in the Marfa100 bike race, a 60-plus-mile trek on scenic FM 2810. The event, founded circa 2010, has experienced steady growth in participation over the years, setting yet another record this year with around 330 riders, up from 250 in 2021.

Some participants opted for a more mild 30-mile route, and not all rode traditional bicycles — two rollerbladers, a recumbent bike and elliptical bike joined the Peloton at the starting point this year. Volunteers manned aid stations at various mile markers, race support assisted stranded riders with flats, and friends and family gathered to cheer on the weary cyclists. Many lingered for an impromptu hang at the finish line. One rider pulled goat heads out of their tires, others …

Zwift Watopia Dust In The Wind Meetup

Texbiker.net Posted on October 19, 2022 by Rick AnkrumOctober 19, 2022

Before today’s Zwift ride I caught up on some long delayed housework. But then it was Zwift time. I searched the upcoming events but none were the time, distance or w/kg I wanted to ride. So, I created a meetup starting at 1:10 PM using the Watopia Dust In The Wind route but only 20 miles of the 32.4 mile total. I went climbing twice and the downhills didn’t compensate for the effort I used getting up them.

ZwiftInsider.com describes the full route: One of five routes rolled out with Zwift’s Titans Grove expansion, “Dust In the Wind” covers Titans Grove twice, as well as Fuego Flats, part of Ocean Boulevard, and a Mayan Jungle out and back. Along the way you’ll encounter a fair amount of virtual dirt/gravel road, so you might consider swapping to a mountain bike so you can move to the front of the pack and make everyone else eat your dust!

I didn’t switch to a mountain bike because I didn’t think of it. I rode Dust In The Wind 2 times before, 1 for the full route and the other less than half of the miles.

10-19-2022 Previous Rides Zwift Watopia Dust In The Wind Route

The reason I rode Zwift today was because when I got up at 6:30 it was 39 degrees and it wasn’t above 60 after i finished my housework around 12:30. Tomorrow it is supposed to warm up to the 80’s.

I collected 4 medals in Strava.
