About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — Houston police are searching for a driver who they said killed a bicyclist and ran from the scene Tuesday night.

The events unfolded at about 8 p.m., when the bicyclist was part of a Pride Ride event taking place along W. Dallas Street.

The group was in one lane, when the victim lost control of his bike and started to tilt onto the next lane. That’s when a driver in a …

Here’s where to find 5 fantastic bike trails in Houston

Rebecca Treon | www.chron.com

Whether you like your trails paved or natural, there’s a Bayou City trail for every type of cyclist.

The Houston area has all the traditional marks of a great city: fine dining, luxury shopping, and world-class museums with the added bonus of ample access to great outdoor spaces. Lovers of the outdoors, especially those who like to see the sights on two wheels, should never feel at a loss in Houston, where bike trails crisscross through the city and beyond.

Whether you’re looking to use the growing list of Houston bike trails as a way to simply get from one part of the city to another, or are hoping for a breezy ride to the outskirts, there are plenty of options in the Bayou City for cyclists.

If you’ve got the itch to ride, keep …

Day 18: Las Cruces, NM to West El Paso, TX

Wednesday October 12, 2022, 45 miles (72 km) – Total so far: 927 miles (1,492 km) Had a really nice evening with Daniel. He showed us around Las Cruces a bit and some of the parks where he likes to do his nature photography. We had a beer at a local brewery with our riding mate who was injured in California. Then Daniel took us out to dinner at a really nice restaurant. I don’t think we will have another meal that good during the trip.

We got up to about 50 degree weather this morning. Slept in a cabin last night so no packing of the tent this morning. There was a beautiful sunrise over the mountains in the distance. Only about 44 miles to West El Paso and mostly downhill so we planned on a pretty good day. We stopped in Mesilla at the Bean for second breakfast about 7 miles in and the coffee and breakfast burrito were wonderful.

Then we made our way down …

Detoured Around Asphalt Clumps And Bumps

Texbiker.net Posted on October 12, 2022 by Rick AnkrumOctober 12, 2022

On my last bike ride on FM 1314 I discovered it was being resurfaced but first the old asphalt had to be ground off. This left big grooves and clumps of old asphalt making for a rough bike ride. Thinking of where to ride today at first I didn’t consider my New Caney – Gene Campbell Road route because of the rough road on FM 1314. But then I thought of a detour that would get me around most of the rough road by riding through the Sorters Mill Elementary school parking lot to Sorters Road and then bike about 200 yards to Old Sorters Road where I turned left and on to Briar Berry Lane to rejoin the route’s normal streets. One other change I made was riding through the new houses in Peppervine to the US59 southbound frontage road.

It all began at 9:51 AM as I rode away on my Lynskey Helix bike. The weather warmed up from yesterday and the humidity increased did as well. No need for extra clothes today. I saw another cyclist as I rolled through Elm Grove Village around mile 3 but none after that. Before starting the ride I watched the Giro Del Veneto bike race on GCN+ while eating breakfast. There is one more European monument road race before the season ends. I finished my bike ride at 12:50 PM.

I have not used today’s route very often this year with this being the 8th time. I rode 3 different bikes for the 8 rides. The 39 miles today was slightly above the average distances of the other 7 times.

10-12-2022 YTD Bike Rides New Caney-Gene Campbell Blvd Route

The wind felt strong at times and the flags in Peppervine waved away from the pole. I didn’t get my overall average speed above 13.9 mph. Maybe my legs were needing to recover. Weather conditions: start 80 (humidity 85%, dew point 75), mostly cloudy, wind N 4 mph; finish 88 (humidity 62%, dew point 74), mostly cloudy, wind S 7 mph.

Cycling event brings action, tourism downtown

From Staff Reports | www.corsicanadailysun.com

The Corsicana and Navarro County Chamber of Commerce and Corsicana Main Street partnered with Holland Racing and USA Cycling to bring the 2022 Texas State Criterium Championship bike race back to Corsicana for a two-day event.

“The bike race was yet again, another successful event for the City of Corsicana. We would like to thank the Corsicana and Navarro County Chamber of Commerce, Holland Racing and USA Cycling for all their efforts in making the race go so smoothly,” said Amy Tidwell, Main Street Director. “We would also like to thank our downtown merchants for taking part in the event by extending their hours to welcome the race families into their shops. The race ended up with around 380 registrants which exceeded our expectations. Holland Racing, the organizers for the race, expressed that Corsicana is one of the …

Dan – Thoughts from Huntington Place | dannagel1.blogspot.com

For those who are new to this blog, I am trying to check out a bike from all 153 B Cycle stations in Houston, during the month of October. I have biked through parts of town I had never seen until now. Yoiu might want to look at my earlier posts.

Last week I rode through The Heights, and yesterday I rode through much of Greater East Side. I try to take side streets in order to avoid being run over, so I am seeing areas I would never see from my car. This morning’s Chronicle has two articles on page D-1 about these neighborhoods. The 2022 Eastwood Historic Home Tour is October 15-16 just south of Harrisburg, close to Cullen. The Sanctuary, formally the Church of the Redeemer is now …

Montrose and the Washington Corridor

Dan – Thoughts from Huntington Place | dannagel1.blogspot.com

Friday night, I dropped a granddaughter off at a meeting in Montrose and started riding my bike in the south part of Montrose. I have no pictures because it was getting dark. Sorry. I tried to stay on neighborhood streets with no traffic. Fairview is a street that works well, as it will get you close to several B Cycle Stations.

I started at Freed Library, rode through St Thomas (nice little campus), And drove past the Rothko Chapel and the Menil Collection. Alabama, Richmond and Westheimer have all sorts of little restaurants, cafes, and bars, most were rather busy on a Friday night. Taft and Fairview has a busy Mexican Restaurant, but there is also an Art Gallery with the large windows where you could see the beautiful people being cool looking at strange art while holding their drinks and canapes (I could not spell hor’something, and my spell check was no help).

Riding on Houston streets, especially at night, is like playing FROGGER. If you ask me what …

A Sunday game of Tidy Up

Dan – Thoughts from Huntington Place | dannagel1.blogspot.com

After Church, Sunday, I decided to tidy up my checklist and pick up some orphan BCycle Stations. You know, the ones that are quite a distance from the other stations.

I started down in Third Ward, around MLK and Griggs. Caught three stations within a few blocks of each other. The local Houston Public Library Branch has three large bird sculptures. Closer inspection reveals that many of the feathers are book titles that have something to do with "birds" from Chicken Little to Six Days of the Condor. Colorful. …

Day 34: Silsbee TX to Deridder LA

Tuesday October 11, 2022 75 miles today was a love hate event. Didn’t get more than 2 hours sleep last night. Roads were busy but mainly decent. I didn’t take many photos today as I just wanted to finish. A good chunk of our ride was on 190 East which is a busy highway. It had a wide shoulder which we love. Amazingly, dog owners just allow their dogs to run after us despite the risk of being hit by a car or truck. When I become Queen of the Southern states, I will decree all dogs MUST be leashed!!! Cyclist Pedestrian Confrontation; Coyote Along Kings River Drive

Texbiker.net Posted on October 11, 2022 by Rick AnkrumOctober 11, 2022

When I started today’s bike ride at 10:08 AM I didn’t know I would hear about a confrontation or see a coyote along Kings River Drive. Riding my Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS eTap bike I followed my most often used route, Atascocita – Walden – Huffman, today. I’m not sure why I ride this route so often but it is easy to follow. I know many of the potholes, cracks, and bumps. Recently I added a loop south to Spanish Cove Drive on FM 2100 after the road construction moved further south. Today I biked 35.71 miles which is about the average distance of the previous 28 rides this year. I finished the bike ride at 1:00 PM.

As I was riding east on Kingwood Greens Drive on the way to W. Lake Houston Parkway a man wearing a bright orange T-shirt flagged me down. He started telling me about a confrontation he had with two cyclists on the W. Lake Houston Parkway bridge sidewalk a few minutes before he flagged me down. He said the two cyclists were riding on the sidewalk and came up to him fast, stopped close to him and told him he should be walking on the road shoulder and not on the sidewalk. This is wrong, the cyclists should have been on the road. They rode passed him and turned around and came back. This time the older cyclist got in the man’s face and argued with him until the younger cyclist pulled him back. The man flagged me down to ask my opinion of him walking on the sidewalk. I told him I almost always ride on the street unless something unusual is happening there. I suggested if this happens again to record it on his phone and report it to the police. The man was upset and I don’t blame him. If I was thinking I should’ve recorded our conversation with my GoPro. The video has a clip I recorded later. This man was not impressed with the cyclists and cyclists wonder why some people are not good with them.

On the way back to Kingwood I was biking on Kings River Drive and saw a coyote on the side of the street. He wasn’t causing a problem because he was dead, maybe hit by a car. I show the coyote in the video. I have spotted them in other places in Kingwood but they were alive.

I needed to change my clothing for the ride when I got in the breakfast area to get ready. The temperature was 70 and the sun was having trouble getting from behind the clouds making me think it might be cooler than I would be comfortable with. I add a long sleeve poly T-shirt and felt better prepared. There were a few times I felt overdressed but when the sky sent some scattered rain drops down in Walden and around Kings Harbor I was just fine. There was no mention of rain in the forecast but it only lasted long enough to slightly damped the streets. Weather for the bike ride: start 70 (humidity 81%, dew point 64), partly cloudy, wind NE 6 mph; finish 80 (humidity 61%, dew point 65), mostly cloudy, wind E 6 mph.
