About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

In a deadly year for Houston bicyclists, here’s why a safety rule isn’t being enforced

Dug Begley | www.houstonchronicle.com

We’re supposed to give bicyclists three feet of space. But police can go months without writing a single ticket.

A cyclist rides on the side of the road along N. Shepherd on Sept. 12, 2022 in Houston. Despite passing a law more than nine years ago requiring drivers to give cyclists at least three feet of space, Houston police have cited only 64 drivers.

Blake Mosby can rattle off the close calls he has had on his bike commute from the Heights to downtown Houston with ease.

There was the time the sideview mirror on a large pickup came so close he wondered how it did not hit the side of his face or helmet. Then there was the woman on Heights Boulevard who tried to pass a car in front of her – by using the bike lane. Mosby said he escaped only because no one was parked in the spot he swerved his bike into to avoid her.

“I do not know, I’ll never know, what she was thinking,” he said. “Did she …

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — I Bike CC, an advocate for protecting bike paths, tells KRIS 6 News that the City of Corpus Christi is updating their street standards, but currently, the 43-page infrastructure design manual doesn’t consider cycling.

"I do feel that it is important to get the word out that there are other modes of transportation on our streets in Corpus Christi,” said Melanie Salinas.

Exploring Lilliput Farms And Tavola

Texbiker.net Posted on October 10, 2022 by Rick AnkrumOctober 10, 2022

On today’s bike ride I went exploring. I rolled out at 10:09 AM riding my Cervelo Caledonia bike. I chose my New Caney – Tavola – Valley Ranch route but made some changes. I changed the first mile intro through Hunters Ridge Village, in Tavola I rode south on Gran Roble through a new section with homes under construction and the streets new enough to not show up on my Bolt computer map. After exiting Tavola biking west on Roman Forest Blvd. I turned right at the Shell station to ride through Lilliput Farms. I rode into Lilliput Farms a few years ago when there were just model homes but last week I learned that the streets connected to Sycamore Street in Woodbranch Village which Lilliput Farms is part of. I could’ve turned right on Sycamore Drive but I went left and looped around and back into Lilliput Farms and returned to Roman Forest Blvd. I could’ve turned right onto North Linnwood Drive and made my way to Railroad Ave. That would also get me to Roman Forest Blvd. A bunch of streets I’ve never biked before. These added a little distance to the route above the average of 35 to 36 miles of the previous 13 times I biked it this year. Today I rode 38.82 miles. My Cervelo Caledonia now has 5,032 miles on it since bought it in February.

10-10-2022 YTD Bike Rides New Caney-Tavoal-Valley Ranch Route

I waited a little for the temperature to get into the 70’s by doing some yard work and eating breakfast. At the start the wind was from the N at 4 mph but when I finished at 1:17 PM it had increased to 12 mph with 17 mph gusts which accounts for the extra effort I had to put out on the way back whenever I rode into the headwind. Lots of sunshine for a fall day. Weather conditions: start 77 (humidity 64%, dew point 64), fair, wind N 4 mph; finish 84 (humidity 38%, dew point 56), a few clouds, wind E 12 mph gusts 17 mph.

LETTERS: Stop signs apply to bicycles, too; Waco means ‘no rain here’

wacotrib.com

Bikes stop, too

Once again last week on my way to work, I watched a guy on a bicycle go through a red light at one of the busiest intersections on Texas Central Parkway (we’re talking 18-wheelers there all the time). When I passed him, I yelled out, “Red lights are for bikes, too!” He followed me to my job and proceeded to argue with me. “Is it your responsibility how I ride my bike?” he asked. Well, yes, it is. I have to share the road with bikes.

If I have to obey the rules of the road, why doesn’t the same thing apply to the bikes I’m sharing the road with? I don’t want to see someone run a red light and get hit by a car or truck coming through the intersection. And I don’t want to be a driver who hits someone by accident. He claimed, “I ride my bike better than you drive.” He doesn’t even know, he’s not seeing me drive every day, he’s not seeing me actually stopping at stop signs and actually obeying speed limits. His claim is false and is patently untrue, as he was the one breaking the law (twice). I was concentrating on my driving so much I wasn’t even playing any music. He finally called me a Karen (which is actually my name) and rode off telling me to …

Sunday October 9, 2022 Well for those who took all the correct turns – talk to the hand about your 80 mile ride. For the rest of us – ME – I overachieved and got in 86 miles. Day 31: La Grange to Navasota TX

Saturday October 8, 2022 65 miles of hills, heat and mixed roads/terrain. Started out in low 60s to a beautiful colorful sunrise. 159 to 237 to 390. Wide shoulder on 159 with well behaved traffic 237 brought us no shoulder with gazillions of trucks pulling boats or trailers. 390 was a highway until we turned onto 390 Farm Road. This road was just beautiful taking us through Texas farmland with lots of huge ranches. Between the towns of …
