About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Can’t Escape Those Orange Barrels But I Did A Dog Sprint

Texbiker.net Posted on October 4, 2022 by Rick AnkrumOctober 4, 2022

Today’s bike ride went to the north along US59/I-69 through Porter, New Caney, and a short side loop through Tavola before riding to SH 242 where I crossed over and headed south through Valley Ranch and a sliver of Oakhurst popping back to US59 going through Peppervine. I call this my Kingwood – SH 242 – Kingwood route. The start time was later than I prefer at 10:31 AM but I wanted the temperature to get to 70. I changed my wardrobe a little wearing shorts, a long sleeve poly T-shirt, and a short sleeve jersey on top. No arm sleeves today. I finished the bike ride at 1:29 PM biking 37.19 miles. This marked the 8th time riding this route. The last 4 rides have been 37+ miles and 1 at 39.42 miles. I’ve used three different bikes over the 8 rides. Today’s average speed was the 2nd fastest at 14.0 mph.

I rode by a carnival along the frontage road on the way back to Kingwood. In Briar Tree a big black dog waited to give me “get off my yard” warning barking and chasing me for about 100 feet on Briar Berry Lane. Fortunately he lost interest quickly and I was riding about 18 mph when I spotted him coming from a yard. A slight tailwind helped me. I could hear his claws clicking on the asphalt which might have slowed him a little if he thought he might slide. Lots of orange barrels on Loop 494 just north of FM 1485 at the railroad tracks. Traffic was light allowing me to get past them without any problems.

A Strava top result 3rd fastest time on Kris Spraggins Memorial Route (2:35).

Weather conditions: start 71 (humidity 66%, dew point 59), mostly cloudy, wind NE 7 mph; finish 82 (humidity 43%, dew point 57), mostly cloudy, wind E 5 mph. The clouds didn’t let much sun through to warm me up too much. After I warmed up I wondered if the long sleeve T-short was too much but it turned out to be just right. I’m not ready for fall like temperatures yet.

Day 25: Del Rio TX to Knippa TX

Sunday October 2, 2022 Rode with Laura today. Weather was decent in low 80s. So much fun chatting about family, music and of course our love for cycling/bikes. We had some strong crosswinds with even stronger gusts. We didn’t break any speed records except when "out-cycling" a few hungry dogs who chased us!! Leaving Del Rio to Bracketville, the shoulder was perfect for first 12 miles. Then changed to super rough. There were many historical markers on 90 East. Passed Laughlin Air Force Base. In Hondo, I think we …

Day 26: Knippa TX to Live Oak TX

Monday October 3, 2022 Early start as we knew we would continue on on 90 East. We had 83 miles today. Weather in 60s when we started but rose to mid 80s. On this stretch, towns appear more often with available food unlike 90 mile stretches with nothing available but wild grown cacti. Passed through Sabinal and D’Hanis probably in the first 30 miles. Plenty of open stores in both. Honda is a big town with Billy Bob’s burgers. Passed some cattle and corn farms. We saw 3 gigantic buzzards dining roadside. They obviously …

From Faded Red to A New Bright Red

Texbiker.net Posted on October 3, 2022 by Rick AnkrumOctober 3, 2022

Usually on Mondays I ride to the north but I changed that up today going south and east on my Atascocita – Walden – Huffman route. Not an early start because it was a little cooler and I had some things to take care of before leaving. I rolled away at 10:29 AM aboard my Cervelo Caledonia, its first ride since the Pineywoods Purgatory on Saturday. I decided to retire my red pair of Pearl Izumi gloves that had faded from the Texas sun and use a new pair of Bellwether Pursuit gloves for the ride. I have not used Bellwether gloves before. They don’t use straps but elastic around the wrist. I finished at 1:09 PM biking 35.71 miles. I have a goal of 651 miles for October, 21 miles per day.

Weather conditions: start 76 (humidity 50%, dew point 56), mostly cloudy, wind NE 7 mph; finish 84 (humidity 33%, dew point 52), mostly cloudy, wind E 7 mph. The arm sleeves felt good in the shade for the early part of the ride until the sun warmed the air. We continued to enjoy low humidity and dew point which contributed to the coolness.

My Legs Refused, Can They Revolt?

Texbiker.net Posted on October 2, 2022 by Rick AnkrumOctober 2, 2022

After romping in the mountains around Lufkin yesterday in the Pineywoods Purgatory my legs refused to do any more than the flat streets in Kingwood. A mini revolt you might say. I rolled out at 1:27 PM after getting home from church and finished at 3:05 PM. I biked 20.79 miles pushing my week total to 227.12 miles to keep my streak of 200+ mile weeks alive. Not biking one day in the week made it hard to get to 200+ miles.

10-2-2022 Week Bike Rides Summary
10-2-2022 Week Bike Rides Summary

During the ride I captured the Strava Local Legend on Old HEB Alley so someone might be calling me the “nasty one” like I did jokingly earlier this week. Only recently it was possible to ride this segment because of the construction work behind the shopping center with a ditch crossing the concrete driveway.

I called this a recovery ride from yesterday’s effort. The weather was warmer than the early morning rollout time in Lufkin. Weather conditions: start 80 (humidity 35%, dew point 50), a few clouds, wind N 6 mph; finish 82 (humidity 31%, dew point 49), partly cloudy, wind N 10 mph.
