About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Trailblazing Early: A New Route to Spanish Cove Drive

Texbiker.net Posted on June 18, 2024 by Rick AnkrumJune 18, 2024

After the rain tricked me yesterday to ride indoors I made a concerted effort to start early today at 9:01 AM. Aboard my Canyon Endurace CF 7 bike I headed south and east to FM2100 and Huffman. Before I got there in Walden I searched out the trails adding them to the route for the first time. This created a new route name, Atascocita – Walden Trails – Spanish Cove Drive. I didn’t find the trail loop by Aerobic Drive but I was close. Next time I’ll look at the map beforehand. The weather forecast talked about afternoon rain and I wanted to finish the ride before that happened which I did at 12:04 PM. The east wind picked up during the ride making the ride east over Lake Houston hard. Turning right onto Fairlake Lane I got some relief from the wind. At the Spanish Cove Drive turn around I checked the wind: from the east 16 mph with 22 mph gusts. No wonder it was hard pedaling into it. I rode 38.62 miles with the extra distance on Walden’s trails helping to overcome not riding outdoors yesterday towards my June goal. I’m still ahead of the pace to get to it with 579.3 miles (64% of the 908 mile goal). As I was out biking I got an email from Strava that I lost the local legend on Lake Houston EB segment. I think that was before I rode the segment today.

Weather: Start 81 degrees, humidity 81%, dew point 74.9, cloud cover 53%, wind E 10 mph gusts 15 mph; @Spanish cove cloud cover 75%, wind E 16 mph gusts 22 mph; Finish 87 degrees, humidity 72%, dew point 76.8, mostly cloudy, wind E 18 mph.

City officials end contract with Houston Bike Share, will remove all stations

By Cassandra Jenkins | communityimpact.com

The city of Houston is canceling its contract with Houston BCycle, a bike share program that operates 150 stations within the municipality and distributes over 1,300 bicycles to residents.

What happened

The bike sharing system will stop operations June 30. According to a June 14 news release, the city will remove stations and bikes over the next few months, and intends to sell the equipment to other bike share systems or sell it through the city’s public surplus auction.

Houston Bike Share, the city’s operator of the bike share system, previously announced plans to shut down in September.

However, Houston City Council approved $500,000 to allow operations to continue for …

No one showed up for San Antonio’s World Naked Bike Ride on Saturday

By Michael Karlis | www.sacurrent.com

The long-touted event was supposed to have left Saturday from Alamo Plaza, which was free both of nude people and bicycles.

Plenty of people were present at Alamo Plaza on Saturday evening. All clothed and none riding bicycles.

Which probably was a big disappointment for anyone who’d read online for San Antonio’s iteration of the World Naked Bike Ride, a series of nationwide events where bare-assed cyclists protest oil dependency and body shaming.

The three-hour ride was supposed to have departed at 8 p.m. from Alamo Plaza — had any nudists actually showed up. …

Navigational Challenges: The Upside-Down Journey Through Kingwood

Texbiker.net Posted on June 16, 2024 by Rick AnkrumJune 16, 2024

As I drove home from church I went over in my mind potential routes for the bike ride. Then I came up with the idea of riding last Sunday’s route in reverse with a few changes. I never rode this route in reverse so keeping the on the correct streets can be hard. I made two mistakes, one in Royal Brook and the other in Kingwood Greens. I got back on course after realizing the mistake. I have this thing about not riding the same streets twice during a ride where possible so I changed the early part going through North Woodland Hills Village and Woodridge Forest before joining the reversed streets from last week. The ride began at 1:31 PM pedaling my Lynskey Helix bike. It was 90 degrees with a SE 6 mph wind. Hot but not too bad. By the time I finished riding 26.12 miles at 3:40 PM it was 93 degrees and the SE wind increased to 12 mph. No wonder it felt harder when I rode into the wind. Riding through Towne Center Park a car show was on (see the video) with many cars and trucks on display. I set a Strava PR on Soaring Woods Misty Broad Heavy Log Calm (4:14).

The week recap of rides shows a total of 247.18 miles. I rode each day averaging 35.31 miles. Monday was the longest ride and Sunday the shortest. I rode my Cervelo Caledonia three times, Canyon Endurace three times, and Lynskey Helix once.

MOUNTAIN BIKING LOCKHART TEXAS STATE PARK: A Small MTB Park but Pretty Fun!

Just Me MTB | www.youtube.com

Worked a week in the bush doing archaeology around the Lockhart area, and saw the trails here at the Park, so I brought my bike for some afterwork rides. Rained out on the first two attempts, but had a cool third attempt. There are 6 nice fast and flowy downhills here but they are quick. The area is pretty and I look forward to hitting em again in cooler weather. I did make a noob orientating mistake and …

We started this morning’s ride from Joshua Springs Park a little north of Boerne, and then headed to Comfort to do “The Wine Loop.” Some extremely strong and fast cyclists were there this morning, and the group was fairly large with about a dozen riders. I was doing the best I could to “sit in“ and draft to conserve energy since I rode last night. Crafting doesn’t help too much when you’re trying to climb a hill, though!? Darren Kruse, Kent Froelund, David George and I got a little separated from the group near the Shell station in Comfort, so we just stayed together from that point back to Joshua Springs Park. As always, I am thankful to my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, for saving me both spiritually and physically enabling me to return to this sport that I love. I thank Him for Kelly Betsinger as well as for another safe ride with a bunch of great men (and women) without any mechanicals or flats.

A fairly large group as we headed out Big Joshua Creek toward Holiday Road.
