About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Lake Houston Lookout: Spotting Cyclists on an Early Morning Route

Texbiker.net Posted on June 15, 2024 by Rick AnkrumJune 15, 2024

Surprised myself by starting the bike ride at 8:09 AM; earliest start this week. I wanted to get to FM1960 where I begin seeing other cyclists on Saturday. I rode my Cervelo Caledonia bike on what I call the Atascocita – Huffman – Walden route but that name covers many route differences. I changed the streets until about 4 miles before returning to the usual one. Strava found one other ride that matched this route from Saturday June 18th, 2022. I’m not sure how exact a route has to be for a match but that one did. As I rode over Lake Houston going east I spotted the first group of cyclists. From there I saw more but not as many as last Saturday. A group of 5 passed me at the Huffman Chevron station as I was leaving. I don’t usually see other cyclists at that spot but later at Fairlake Lane. The 4 mph wind wasn’t a factor in the ride no matter which direction I rode. The legs were good over the mostly flat roads and streets. I finished before the heat at 10:51 AM.

Riding through Walden I was tempted to check out the mud under FM1960 on the Atascocita Hike and Bike Trail but I didn’t give in. I’ll give the county maintenance crew more time.

I don’t think much about cadence during a ride but when I look at the graph afterwards it is interesting, especially the total revolutions.

Austin celebrates Juneteenth with historic bike ride, block party with bites by local ‘Top Chef’ contestant

By Taylor Kamnetz | www.lonestarlive.com

Juneteenth, also known as “Freedom Day,” takes place on Wednesday, June 19. While the Central Texas Juneteenth Parade and Festival is set to take place on Saturday, June 15, there are still events to attend in Austin, Texas, on the holiday itself.

Take the Fifth Annual Black History Social Ride and Block Party, for instance. This multipart event takes place on June 19 and aims to educate attendees on the historical significance of Austin’s Black and BIPOC communities while celebrating Juneteenth at a neighborhood park in East Austin. …

BCycle, kiosk bike system in Houston, ending June 30. Nonprofit cites inability to keep going

By Dug Begley | www.houstonchronicle.com

Houston’s long-struggling system of on-demand bicycles is reaching the end of the trail.

BCycle, the system of kiosks with available bikes spread around downtown, Midtown and other locations will close June 30, officials with the nonprofit that operates it said.

“Despite our efforts, Houston Bike Share, the nonprofit operator, has been unable to secure the necessary funding and leadership to sustain operations,” the group said.

In a letter sent earlier this month to partners, the chairman of the nonprofit’s board, Neeraj Tandon, said working with the city all the BCycle stations around the city could be removed by Sept. 15.

Houston city leaders in October bailed out the nonprofit with funding to last until June, with the …

METRO bike share program remains unclear for summer debut

By Melissa Enaje | communityimpact.com

The future of a 24-hour bike share program that was originally scheduled to roll out this summer as part of the Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County remains uncertain.

Community Impact reached out to METRO officials in May to get a status update, but as of press time, a response from the new executive board has yet to be seen.

How we got here

The contract that would have jumpstarted a $5.5 million strategic bike share program using existing METRO transit hubs was unanimously approved for funding by the previous board contract last September. …

Houston BCycle to shut down at end of June after 12-year ride

Adam Zuvanich | www.houstonpublicmedia.org

The nonprofit bike-sharing network had planned to keep operating until METRO, the region’s transit provider, could launch a system of its own. It is unclear whether the latter will happen.

Houston will soon be without a bike-sharing network for the first time in more than a decade.

Houston BCycle, which was created by the city government in 2012 and grew to as many as 160 stations in recent years, will cease operations at the end of June amidst declining revenues, escalating costs and deteriorating infrastructure, according to a member of its board of directors.

The nonprofit network, which offers both traditional and electric bikes as a mode of transportation and also for recreational use, already had planned to wind down its operations after getting a $500,000 infusion last fall from the city. Houston BCycle’s plan at the time was to keep going until METRO, the region’s transit provider, could stand up a network of its own. …

Cyclist struck, dragged by car on Main Street, police say

Jason Hennington | www.taylorpress.net

A woman riding her bicycle remains hospitalized after being involved in an accident with a car and dragged down Main Street Friday morning, police said.

Carla Hoffman of Taylor was rushed from downtown to a local hospital shortly before 8 a.m., said Police Chief Henry Fluck.

According to investigators, Hoffman was pedaling west on Third Street when a black Chevrolet Cruze traveling east on Third turned north onto Main and collided with the bicycle.

"Although we don’t have a camera, it appears …

City Council Approves Bicycle Parking Requirements

richardsontoday.com

The City Council voted to amend Richardson’s Comprehensive Zoning Ordinance Monday to include a section detailing new bicycle parking standards that will apply to new non-residential and apartment construction and building expansions. The standards are a best practice consistent with other cities regionally and were previously approved by the City Plan Commission and the Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee.

The parking standards: …

Navigating Tavola: A Refreshing Ride On Flag Day

Texbiker.net Posted on June 14, 2024 by Rick AnkrumJune 14, 2024

A northerly ride to Tavola took me through several Kingwood villages, Woodridge Forest, Brooklyn Trails, Porter, and New Caney. Riding on Via Principale Parkway I turned right onto Gran Roble Drive to explore the side streets. I last rode the New Caney – Tavola – Valley Ranch route on May 8th, 2024. I didn’t think it had been that long ago. No home construction on the streets I rode in Tavola. In Tavola West numerous homes are under construction. Today I changed the lead in from the start riding some streets in reverse or skipping them. In Elm Grove Village I rearranged the streets as well. From there the ride followed the usual streets. The previous 4 rides on the route this year average about 38 miles and today I rode 37.88 miles. This put me at 480.49 miles or 53% of my 908 mile goal, slightly ahead of the pace needed. I started at 9:42 AM and finished at 12:50 PM avoiding the heat of the day. During the ride the wind was 7 mph or less. On the way back to Kingwood I stopped under TX99 at Valley Ranch Parkway for a few minutes to enjoy the shade and sometime breeze. My Canyon Endurace bike now has 4079 miles. My legs felt good today propelling me along. The route only has a few long stretches to build up my average speed so I didn’t get to 14.0 mph overall.

Weather: Start 85 degrees, humidity 75%, dew point 76.1, a few clouds, wind NE 4 mph; @TX99 cloud cover 27%, wind NNE 3 mph; Finish 89 degrees, humidity 59%, dew point 72.6, partly cloudy, wind NE 7 mph.
