About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Tina Pic, Danny Estevez win USA CRITS ninth stop in El Paso

Rebecca Reza | www.velonews.com

Rachel Langdon, Thomas Gibbons retain series leads heading into the final, tenth race.

U.S. criterium champion Danny Estevez sprinted to his second consecutive USA CRITS win in El Paso, Texas on Saturday night. Posting up in the stars-and-stripes at speed in the darkness, it was a repeat of his Athens Twilight Criterium win, only this time he had his Best Buddies teammate Michael Hernandez right behind him for second and Sam Rosenholtz (ButcherBox) in third.

In the women’s race, Tina Pic (Colavita-Hello Fresh) won from a four-rider breakaway that escaped with 10 laps to go. Kaitlyn Agnew (ATX Wolfpack-Jakroo) attacked on …

Funds earmarked for hike-and-bike trail near Lookout Road

Jeff B. Flinn | www.mysanantonio.com

The city of Selma will receive funds that will give its residents a hike-and-bike trail stretching from the Lookout Road area to the city’s Harrison House Park.

The Alamo Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) completed its recent round of transportation funding. Selma City Administrator Johnny Casias said the city received approval of its lone request for the 2023-2026 funding cycle — the $2,934,800 Lookout Road bike and sidewalk lane.

“This improves the pedestrian and sidewalk improvements, along the north …

Hotter’n Hell Hundred 40th Annual August 28, 2021 Wichita Falla, Texas

Roy and Christine | roy-pedalpushers.blogspot.com

Take off time was 7:05 a.m.. The "05" is due to Shepard Air Force Base jets flying over at 0700. I have never gotten a photo of them as the fly over is during the National Anthem. Helmets off, hands over the heart–doesn’t leave enough hands for a photo. (No, cyclers do not kneel; helmet off, hand over heart).

Driving To Lucy Park Without Elsie Hotpepper To Bike To Wichita Falls

Durango Texas | durangotexas.blogspot.com

Elsie Hotpepper called last night when I was not available to talk to. So, this morning I called the Hotpepper back to ask if she wanted to ride to Lucy Park with me. But, Elsie was not available, so I drove alone to Lucy Park to take my backup bike on a ride.

Above you can see the bike has arrived at Wichita Falls.

Wichita Falls, the waterfall, is not in Lucy Park. One rides the Circle Trail out of Lucy Park and in about a half a mile one comes to Wichita Falls, the waterfall, not the town. Both Lucy Park and Wichita Falls, the waterfall, are in Wichita Falls, the town. So is the Circle Trail.

I rolled my wheels all the way to O’Reilly Park, which is a short distance from the …

M-K-T Bridge reopening now uncertain as repairs revealed more damage

Dug Begley | www.houstonchronicle.com

Months after a fire closed a key Houston trail link, opening day for the M-K-T Bridge remains up in the air, after workers discovered more repairs are needed to the old railroad crossing.

“They found additional damage caused by the fire that was not visible during the initial assessment,” the Houston Parks Board said in a statement. “Further repairs are needed before the bridge can safely reopen. In addition, there is also damage to the bridge caused by wear and tear that we would like to address while it is closed.”

That leaves the link along the Heights Hike and Bike Trail near Interstate 10 …

Harold Eugen Gilliland 1937 – 2021

www.legacy.com

Dr. Harold Eugene Gilliland 1937-2021 Dr. Harold Eugene Gilliland departed this life at eighty-four years of age on September 9, 2021 in Austin, Texas, of complications from COVID-19 after battling cerebellar ataxia for several years. Harold was born September 9, 1937 to Lonnie and Lillian (Baade) Gilliland in Duncan, Oklahoma. He was the valedictorian of the first graduating class of John Marshall (initially Britton) High School, Oklahoma City, in 1955. He continued his education at the …

… After his retirement in 1996 from Conoco, Inc., Harold became passionate about fitness and exercise, especially road cycling. He started cycling to raise money for charities and rode in innumerable cycling events that each spanned several days, including rides in Texas from Houston to Austin and San Antonio to Corpus Christi to raise money for multiple sclerosis research (MS 150 Rides). He also rode in California, Texas, the northeastern United States and Canada, among other places, to raise money for AIDS research; and completed the California AIDS Ride from San Francisco to Los Angeles on several occasions. He later pushed himself by racing competitively in international cycling and excelled, winning in his age group in different cycling events. …

Not Ready For Cool, Exploring FM 2100, 200 Mile Week

Texbiker.net Posted on September 11, 2021 by Rick AnkrumSeptember 11, 2021

I’m not ready for fall weather yet but that didn’t matter. When I got up around 6:30 AM the temperature was 59 degrees, brrrr!. With the chill and sunrise not happening until 7:02 AM the bike ride didn’t start until 8:53 AM. I debated about beefing up my bike kit but opted for shorts, short sleeve jersey, and arm sleeves. My usual Saturday ride route was the order for the day. I rode my Canyon Endurace CF SLX bike for 32.35 miles. This put the week at 218.75 miles. The last time I biked less than 200 miles in a week was June 17th – 23rd. This was the 5th time biking today’s route in 2021. YTD 2021 continues to lead 2020 by 231 miles with 7,127 miles this year.

Once the sun came up it warmed up. My kit choice turned out to be a good one. I almost chose not to take my CamelBak and use one of my new Polar water bottles but I stuck with the CamelBak because I thought it would warm up. Weather summary: start 71 (73% humidity, 62 dew point), a few clouds, wind NE 5 mph; finish 84 (47% humidity, 62 dew point), a few clouds, wind E 10 mph. The other cyclists I saw dressed like me.

When I got to FM 2100 I decided to explore the new under construction southbound lanes. I rode north across from Lake Houston Untied Methodist Church where the pavement ended (see the video). It looks like the section from there to the railroad tracks are close to paving. There is a sidewalk along this side of the road too. It sits back from the road 40 to 50 feet.

Not all of the cyclists I encountered made it in the video. Some caught me in a position not able to get the GoPro out in time.

One of things I enjoy about biking is time to think. Many subjects come up. Sometimes I solve a problem, other times I create one. Memories come up too. Today I thought about what I was doing on 9/11/2001 when I learned about the planes crashing into the NYC towers. I was at work when my boss called me to look at the TV in his office. We couldn’t believe what we were seeing. The rest of the day we mostly watched TV news.
