About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Cyclists try to Conquer the Coast on Saturday

Annie Rice | www.caller.com

A thousand cyclists gather around the American Bank Center. Some pump air into their tires, others are doing a practice ride on Ocean Drive. Everyone is getting ready for their bike ride around the Coastal Bend.

Conquer the Coast is a bike ride where cyclists have one of three options: a 66-mile, 21-mile or 10-mile loop around the Coastal Bend. …

Skipped Dog Sprints, Substituted Other Cyclists

Texbiker.net Posted on September 18, 2021 by Rick AnkrumSeptember 18, 2021

I skipped the dog sprints on today’s bike ride without any objections on my part. Rolling away at 8:11 AM I expected to see some other cyclists along my “Atascocita – Huffman – Walden” route and I wasn’t disappointed. Now that the FM 2100 construction paved most of the northbound side from Old Atascocita Road I can ride to Huffman without dodging the weeds on the sidewalk. 6 times I rode the route in 2021. Today’s 33.27 miles is the longest of the group. This improved the week to 115.07 miles and September to 468.79 miles. It won’t be a 200 mile week though.

The temperature was in the lower 70’s at the start and 85 when I finished at 10:44 AM. Since it was cooler I opted to use one of my new Polar Breakaway Insulated water bottles in place of the CamelBak. I wanted to see if the water stayed cool until the finish and it did. On shorter rides I may use the Polar bottle. Not having the 3 pounds of water on my back felt different. As the ride progressed the sun moved above the trees with just a few clouds making it bright. Weather summary: start 74 (99% humidity, 74 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind calm; finish 85 (74% humidity, 76 dew point), partly cloudy, wind NW 7 mph. The light wind didn’t pose much a problem.

The red tint in the right picture is from my flashing taillight. I didn’t think to turn it off for the photo. The first time I tried to get a drink it took me a few seconds to figure out how to open the valve; it pulls up.

East Enders can look forward to a new bike path in their area. Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo announced on September 15 that the county has approved a partnership with Houston Parks and Recreation to design, build, and maintain a hike and bike path along the south bank of Buffalo Bayou.

The project will be led by Harris County Precinct 2 Commissioner Adrian Garcia, Hidalgo added. The path will connect Buffalo Bend Nature Park and Hidalgo Park in the north end of Houston’s Magnolia Park, per Garcia’s office.

Ears and Beers, Texas Tumbleweed 100 draw crowd to courthouse square

John Key | www.moorenews.com

By the time Cariann Holgens of Amarillo crossed the finish line of the Moore County YMCA’s Texas Tumbleweed 100 Bike Race/Ride at 4:00 pm Saturday, the temperature outside had cooled to 98.78 degrees Fahrenheit, down from a high of over 100 degrees an hour before. The wind was blowing at 23 miles per hour and gusting over 28 in a southerly direction. She had just been traveling north from 4-Way, the last leg of a 100 mile bicycle ride that began at 8:00 am that morning. When she finally stopped riding she was smiling and crying. Her face was fiery red. The ride really had been "harder than hell," as the advertising for the event said, but she had finished.

Holgens was the last rider out. Officials from the Y, her fiance, and friends were waiting at the finish line. Many riders that …

Is it time to replace your bike helmet?

Marilyn Moritz | www.ksat.com

Texas company recalls toddler bike helmet due to risk of head injury

SAN ANTONIO – In the past year, the number of people getting back on the bike for exercise or fresh air is up. Unfortunately, so are falls, crashes and injuries. So, will your bike helmet protect you? Or, is it time for a replacement?

“Bike helmets aren’t indestructible,” said Consumer Reports’ Kevin Loria. “If you’ve been in a crash you need to replace your helmet as soon as possible.”

Wearing a helmet that fits well and is not damaged is key to protecting riders from serious head injuries.

A helmet can look fine after a crash, but there could still be damage that’s not easily seen. Accidents or …

Muir Lake

By Shinerider | austinmountainbiking.com

Looks like our newest park in Wilco is under construction (Lakeline Park). That means, the Redline trail from Cypress creek road around the south side of Muir lake to the apartment complex is now destroyed and dotted with siltfences. Sucks, but nice to see the park moving forward. I know this is somewhat late, but just realize you can’t connect them anymore. You MIGHT be able to stay on doubletrack on the north side of the lake and cross the dam to achieve the same thing. Funny that the southside concrete trail will pretty much mimic our original singletrak …

Dog Sprints, Some Sun Breaks Through, 2nd Time Riding Route

Texbiker.net Posted on September 17, 2021 by Rick AnkrumSeptember 17, 2021

Finally some sunshine broke through the mostly cloudy sky. It didn’t last too long though as the clouds closed ranks after I started the bike ride at 9:54 AM. Warmer than yesterday by a few degrees but not as hot as last week. I looked up a route from 5/29/2020 and decided to ride try and duplicate it but I ended up with a few different streets. But today’s mileage was slightly longer at 39.88 miles. This won’t be a 200 mile week but I am working on at least a 100 mile week with 81.8 miles so far. Missing 3 biking days due to the weather broke my string of 200 mile weeks. I crossed over the 400 mile point for September with 435.52 miles. My 700 mile goal is getting closer.

All Bike Rides Summary for Today's route

For some reason my left knee hurt early in the ride until I stood up and pedaled some as I exited Woodridge Forest. I don’t have knee problems. Maybe my shoes were not in the position they usually are. The cleats have a few degrees of float.

Two dog encounters during the ride. The first one came on Linwood Drive in Woodbranch Village as I neared Railroad Ave. A house on the left had two dogs behind a fence. I only saw one as I pedaled by because of the bushes along the fence. As I neared the stop a sing a small dog darted across the street barking and chasing me. A pickup was in front of me causing me to slow and giving the dog time to get close. The pickup turned left and I sped up turning right with the dog beside me now growling. Once on Railroad Ave. the dog stopped running beside me and I rode away. A near miss. Encounter two happened later at Rock Creek and Northpark drives. I stopped for the traffic light and a dog I have seen there before starting barking at me from a distance. Whenever I looked his direction he started barking but stayed about 30 – 40 feet away. This time another dog was with him but stood silent behind the barking one. He didn’t move but the other one would move towards me when he barked but stayed a “safe” distance. The light changed, I turned right onto Northpark and the barking dog ran along with me but in the grass barking. I’ve noticed on other rides when the dog reached a point where the construction fence dips out he would stop running quickly like a barrier was there. That happened today too. He wants to chase and bark but there is a limit on his travel. I pedaled fast here too.

Riding south on the frontage road from FM 1485 I saw the northbound main lanes traffic backing up, red lights flashing, and 2 ambulances. A truck was laying on its side. You can see this in the video.

Weather summary: start 81 (77% humidity, 73 dew point), partly cloudy, wind W 6 mph; finish 82 (75% humidity, 73 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind NW 8 mph.
