About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Rain Catches Me Again. I’m Ready For Dry Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on July 15, 2021 by Rick AnkrumJuly 15, 2021

I watched stage 18 of the Tour before starting today’s bike ride at 11:00 AM. They climbed mountains while my ride was pancake flat. Riding my Canyon Endurace bike I followed the “May Park Community Center – Huffman” route covering 39.32 miles. This was the 6th time on this route in 2021. The miles today was typical. My week now totals 156.72 miles getting closer to a 200 mile week. July is looking good at 498.21 miles, 62% of the way to my 800 mile goal.

7-15-2021 YTD Bike Rides Summary Today’s Route

Rain was possible during the afternoon. I thought I was going to avoid it but as I rode to the May Park Community Center on Scott Road I heard thunder. Turning left onto Wolf Road I could see the dark clouds to the south where not too long ago white fluffy clouds filled the sky. Once I was biking south on FM 2100 the dark clouds looked threatening and I rode faster but towards them. My goal was Smith Road to the west where I hoped to stay ahead of the rain. Thunder roared a few times in the distance. I made it across Lake Houston but the strong wind gusts over the lake pushed my front wheel around almost the whole time. On Atascocita Shores Drive I thought I was staying ahead of the rain until I wasn’t. Light rain followed by strong rain on Kings River Drive and I looked for a place to get out of it. I found a portico at Kings Crown Ct. and stopped for about 8 minutes until the rain stopped.

Back biking the streets were wet until I reached W. Lake Houston Parkway about 1/2 mile away from where I took shelter. The rain clouds were behind me but I still rode quickly and finished at 1:57 PM. A short spray wash of the Canyon Endurace to get the grit off and I went inside.

Overall weather conditions: start 84 (78% humidity, 76.7 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind S 10 mph; finish 86 (70% humidity, 75 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind S 8 mph.

Riding on their own: How kids with special needs are learning to ride a bike

by: Allison Fox O’Connor | www.fox44news.com

HARKER HEIGHTS, Texas — ICanShine bike camps has partnered with the Variety of Texas Children’s Charity to help special needs kids in the Central Texas area learn how to ride a bike with no help.

“It’s one of those things that you just never know if your child can do that, because of their disability,” says Laura Himstedt, a mother of a camper.

Laura is Voa’s mother, a ten-year-old from Waco who – until now – has never been able to ride a bike on her own. But thanks to ICanShine camps, she’s learning how.

“To be able to bring in these kids who …

FNR#5 & Junior/LCYCL championship

Alkek Velodrome Update | www.facebook.com

Mark Bing Memorial YCL Championships Last Friday was YCL finals and we had 3 very competitive fields on junior riders. Our 11 & Under Omnium was won by Amelia Brightly who swept the 3 races and also won the Big Brother race with Josh Western & Andrew Evans completing the top 3! Sebastian Bech won the Junior Open boys Omnium head of Amelia’s older brother Lucas Brightly and Caden Davis. It was Caden’s younger sister Taylor Davis however who stole the show sweeping 3 very closely fought races to take the Junior girls omnium ahead of Gabi St-Clair and Tegan Morgan. It was also great to see Ethan Bing there, he even raced with an excellent 3rd place in the Men’s C4 Snowball! Full results are available here.

Rider Updates from Last Week

www.alkekvelodrome.com

Injuries happen in all sports and cycling is no exception, crashing is a risk we all face. Luckily on the whole track cycling is considerably less risky than many other forms of racing, most accidents happen at low speed, largely due to the nature of track bike geometry and handling, they are made to go fast! However occasionally we get a bad one and last Friday was one of those times. Three riders were involved and I have been in touch with them.

Paul suffered primarily road rash and some soreness, I am sure we’ll see him back soon. He’s pretty tough and it will take more than that to stop him! Zach ended up with a broken hand and required surgery but the recovery period is hopefully a matter of weeks. Tak was worst off and for the second time in his cycling career broke his right clavicle. He however is in good spirits and can’t wait to come back but is looking at 3-6 months for a full recovery but hopes to be on the Wattbike again next week. All are very competent riders who have been in this place before, we wish them a speedy and full recovery.

Several other minor falls happened on Friday also with no significant injuries noted although it did put a dampener on an otherwise great night.

I have spoken to Carl about ways we can improve rider safety at races and we hope to be able to bring race clinics during open training soon covering relevant skills, tactics and ending with a mock race.

Saddle Adjustment Test, New Caney – Tavola – Valley Ranch Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on July 14, 2021 by Rick AnkrumJuly 14, 2021

After riding to the south yesterday I rode north on my “New Caney – Tavola – Valley Ranch” route. I checked the radar before leaving and didn’t see any rain nearby. After watching the finish of stage 17 of the Tour de France I got ready and rode away on my Lynskey R300 bike at 11:00 AM. When I finished at 1:54 PM I heard thunder to the east and some dark clouds in that direction.

Today’s route is one I ride frequently with today being number 10 in 2021. I biked 35.97 miles which was a couple miles more than I guessed at the beginning. My week total now stands at 117.40 miles. July moved up to 458.89 miles, or 57% of the way to my 800 mile goal. I am positioned nicely for a 200+ mile week with 4 potential biking days left in the week. YTD 2021 miles are 5,219. This trails 2020 by 117 miles. I am holding the difference steady but I would like to close the gap some. Last year on this date I biked 34.06 miles which was less than today and accounted for a small decrease.

7-14-2021 YTD Bike Rides Summary Today's Route
7-14-2021 YTD Bike Rides Summary Today’s Route

A summary of the weather conditions: start 86 (70% humidity, 75.3 dew point), partly cloudy, wind E 6 mph; finish 88 (66% humidity, 74.8 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind SE 12 mph. The normal high for today is 93.2. As I write this post thunder is much closer than earlier. Rain seems to be an afternoon regular event. I finished the ride at a good time to avoid it.

Yesterday I moved the seat pads on the BiSaddle seats on both my Canyon Endurace and Lynskey R300 bikes. I moved them farther apart to see if this position hits my sit bones in a better location. I think it helped on the Lynskey but maybe the seat pads could be slightly closer. I will check the new position on the Canyon during tomorrow’s bike ride. Then I will make any necessary adjustments.

Residents weigh in on pros, cons of e-bikes on The Woodlands Township pathways

As e-bikes, or motorized bicycles, grow in popularity, however, the township is seeking public feedback on whether it should alter that policy to allow the vehicles to be used in their motorized capacity.
