About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Discover Fun Facts Along the New Boggy Creek Urban Trail

City of Austin | austintexas.gov

For the next month, signs will temporarily line the new dual track on the Boggy Creek Trail to tell visitors fun facts about the sights they see. The new dual track is the first of its kind in Austin and connects Rosewood Ave to E. 12th Street, where it joins the existing Boggy Creek Urban Trail. Dual-track trails separate people walking from people biking, which increases safety and creates more space for the different paces of users. The project was made possible through a partnership with Austin Public Works, Austin Transportation, and the Parks and Recreation Department. Learn more and take a virtual tour of the trail on the Boggy Creek Trail website.

The Boggy Creek Trail is family friendly and passes by interesting sites, both new and old. Learn about community artwork at the Pillars Project, discover some of the history of …

Bike Ride Into Liberty County Briefly, Chip and Seal Barrier

Texbiker.net Posted on March 4, 2021 by Rick AnkrumMarch 4, 2021

For some variety I chose a longer route for today’s bike ride. Because of the construction on FM 2100 I wasn’t sure how long the ride would be since I would leave out that part of the route. Grabbing my Canyon Endurace bike I started the bike ride at 12:17 PM. I chose the “May Park Community Center – Huffman” route and biked 40.08 miles, the longest ride so far in 2021. The last time I biked this route was June 16th last year.

2021 mileage moved ahead of where I was on this date in 2020 by 36 miles. Year to date road and Zwift miles total 1328.

Plenty of sunshine today and the temperature went up a couple of degrees from yesterday’s bike ride. I left leg warmers at home and wore shorts, a long sleeve thermal jersey under a windbreaker jacket. The wind picked during the ride and the long segment headed east on FM 1960 put the wind at my right front quarter. Not exactly a headwind but close enough that I pedaled hard. Overall weather conditions: start 68 (45% humidity, 45.7 dew point), partly cloudy, wind SE 9 mph; finish 70 (41% humidity, 45 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind SE 13 mph.

The wind didn’t stop me building up my average speed to 14.2 mph for a long period of time. As I returned to Kingwood on W Lake Houston Parkway I got it up to 14.3 mph until moving to the greenbelt trail at Kings Harbor. Strava awarded me two Local Legend titles for two segments in Kingwood. I had one on another segment for a few days until someone took it away.

A couple of photos from the ride. The first one shows me approaching the Liberty County line which I don’t cross very often. The second is me headed west on FM 1960 before crossing Lake Houston. The wind wasn’t too bad crossing the lake today.

  • 3-4-2021 Bike Ride at Liberty County
  • 3-4-2021 Bike Ride on FM 1960 W
3-4-2021 Strava Bike Ride Summary

Without the road construction on FM 2100 I would ride south on Fairlake Lane, go east on Old Atascocita Road and north on FM 2100 to FM 1960 then east.

Employees going on ‘fake commutes’ to help separate home and remote work

By Jeff Ehling | abc7.com

HOUSTON, Texas — If you are working from home you probably do not miss the commute into the office every day, but for some people, keeping their home office and their home life from colliding has been struggle.

So now there is something called a "fake commute."

Office worker Susan Jaworski says she started doing a "fake commute" for a very good reason.

"One more email, one more phone call, that one more message, that 10 minutes was turning into an hour, two hours," said Jaworski.

The COVID-19 pandemic sent Jaworski and millions of other office workers home, and months later, those …

Bike Ride to Roman Forest In The Sun But Cool Temperature

Texbiker.net Posted on March 3, 2021 by Rick AnkrumMarch 3, 2021

Today’s bike ride is the first road one of March. After two chilly days the temperature rose above 60 degrees but slowly. I started the bike ride at 12:27 PM riding my Lynskey R300 bike. Choosing a north route I headed off on the “New Caney – Roman Forest Blvd – Oakhurst” route. By the 2:56 PM finish I biked 32.06 miles. This is the first time riding this route in 2021 though I rode a similar one in January. My goal for March is 600 road miles and 75 miles in Zwift. With today’s miles I only need 568 more.

This coming Saturday I planned on riding the Baytown YMCA Gator Ride but their Facebook page says the ride is postponed until later in March or April.

I dressed warm today because the temperature was still in the low 60’s when I started. I wore shorts, leg warmers, long sleeve thermal jersey, windbreaker jacket, and a new pair of full finger gloves from RockBros.

The gloves kept my fingers warm but I should’ve bought the next larger size. I can wear them but the fingers could be a little longer. Weather conditions for the bike ride: start 63 (36% humidity, 36.1 dew point), a few clouds, wind calm; finish 66 (32% humidity, 35.6 dew point), a few clouds, wind W 5 mph. As you can see in the video the blue sky looked great after a couple of cloudy days. Wind wasn’t a problem though I did hit some places where the headwind tried to slow me down.

Riding the Lynskey R300 with the 90mm stem positions me better and I think my pedaling is stronger. With the 32mm tires the ride is different from my Canyon Endurace with 28mm tires. I aired the Lynskey tires to 82 psi while the Canyon is 90 psi. There are cobbles on Rock Creek just north of North Park Drive. The Lynskey rides over them and I usually can stay on a straight line through them but the Canyon bounces more making it hard to keep a straight line.
