About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Bicyclist hospitalized after hit and run in east Harris County

Ahmed Humble | www.click2houston.com

HOUSTON – A bicyclist was rushed to the hospital overnight Tuesday after authorities say a driver hit the cyclist in east Harris County and kept on driving. It happened shortly before 2:30 a.m. when deputy constables with Precinct 3 say an unidentified man was riding his bike on S Lake Houston Parkway when he was hit by a vehicle.

He was rushed to the hospital in serious condition by emergency officials.

SEE ALSO: Ask 2: Is it legal to ride a bicycle on the sidewalk?

We’re told the roadway where the hit-and-run happened is poorly lit, so officers do not have a description of the vehicle involved. No additional information has been shared, as of this writing, but an investigation remains underway.

Trailblazing Through April: From Big Bend to Lake Houston Wilderness Park

Texbiker.net Posted on April 30, 2024 by Rick AnkrumApril 30, 2024

No need to wait for the streets to dry for a bike ride today. I rolled out over an hour earlier than yesterday on my Cervelo Caledonia bike at 11:05 AM. The weather was great, lots of sunshine, light wind. The Atascocita – Walden – Spanish Cove Drive route took me south and east over Lake Houston. At Huffman and FM2100 I waited about 20 minutes for the Amtrak Sunset Limited train to pass through on the way to New Orleans. I saw several other cyclists in Kingwood before riding south on W. Lake Houston Parkway. It was new bike jersey day to celebrate all of the April bike rides. I rode 36.52 miles, finishing April with 889.4 miles. This was 8 miles less than March. I rode 26 out 30 days in April. I began the month in Big Bend National Park. Rode my Trek Marlin 8 MTB on the Lake Houston Wilderness Park trails for the first time. Year to date road mile goals total 2258 versus actual road miles of 2393. Year to date 2024 miles is ahead of years 2011 through 2023.

Weather: Start 79 degrees, humidity 74%, dew point 69.8, 63% cloud cover, wind SE 8 mph gusts 11 mph; Finish 83 degrees, humidity 68%, dew point 71.7, 23% cloud cover, wind SE 8 mph gusts 11 mph.

Tube Troubles and Triumphs: A Cyclist’s Rainy Day Solution

Texbiker.net Posted on April 29, 2024 by Rick AnkrumApril 29, 2024

Between midnight and 7 AM my home weather station recorded 2.74″ of rain. I wasn’t in a rush to start a bike ride until the streets dried off some. I watched the Vuelta España Feminina race and a YouTube channel while I waited. When the streets looked dry I squeezed the front tire on my Cervelo Caledonia and it was softer than the rear tire. This has been going on for a number of weeks and I decided to find the cause. It didn’t take long moving the tube through water in the sink. A stream of bubbles came from the edge of a patch. I tried to peal it off but the glue bonded with the rubber. Not wanting to put a patch on a patch I replaced the rubber tube with a TPU tube. Apparently when I bought the TPU tubes I didn’t notice the stem length and it was 85mm. Fortunately the Cervelo has 50mm carbon rims so the extra long stem does stick out too much, I hope.

That problem solved the ride began at 12:15 PM heading north on my Kingwood – FM1485 – Kingwood route. With all of the rain I wondered if riding under US59 at Caney Creek might be an issue. When I got there the road showed signs of water but it had drained off. The ditches along the frontage roads were full as the rain ran to the lower places. The strong wind from the last three days was gone making pedaling much easier. The ride ended at 2:53 PM after riding 33.03 miles, padding my April mileage to 852.95. Hopefully I can add more tomorrow. I stopped on Rock Creek Drive in Oakhurst and took these photos.
