About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Bike demand high during pandemic

By Michael Bauer | www.oaoa.com

Peyton’s Bikes manager John Beane, left, encourages customer Tony Davis to take an e-mountain bike out for a test ride Wednesday, Jan. 13, 2021 in Odessa. Since 1956, Peyton’s Bikes has serviced the Permian Basin after starting in Midland as a toy shop owned by Bob Peyton and his brother Dick in 1952.

Since the pandemic started, the demand for bicycles has skyrocketed across the country and the same can be said for local shop Peyton’s Bikes.

The store, which has locations in Midland and San Angelo recently opened up a new shop right here in Odessa back in December.

“It’s been really good,” Peyton’s Bikes owner Jason Haislip said. “We’ve been looking to be in Odessa for a while. We’ve been serving the area for about …

Post First Vaccine Dose Bike Ride to FM 2100 and Back

Texbiker.net Posted on February 26, 2021 by Rick AnkrumFebruary 26, 2021

When I got up this morning the weather didn’t look favorable for biking but as the morning wore on it changed. I decided to ride my Lynskey R300 bike today as I biked my “Atascocita – Walden – FM 2100” route. I should’ve rode my Canyon Endurace bike though since 3 years go today it arrived and I unboxed it. The post about the unboxing with pictures. But I didn’t think of that until after the 11:11 AM start and I was on the road. Tomorrow I will ride the Canyon bike. During the 3 years I biked 20,618 miles on it. This was the 3rd time biking this route in 2021.

Yesterday I received the first dose of the Pfizer vaccine at NGR Park. I arrived at the park entrances on South Main but there wasn’t a way to turn left because the police had all of the left turn lanes blocked. I drove to I-610, cut through a WhataBurger restaurant to get on the northbound side of South Main. From then no problems. At gate 16 I showed my QR code reservation and began the labyrinth drive to the first tent where the military person asked some questions and put a “1” on my windshield. The labyrinth resumed. I don’t think I have been to a place with so many orange traffic cones. The next, and last tent, administered the shot in less than 2 seconds. I drove forward for the 15 minute wait to be sure no reaction happened. None did. The only thing I have is a sore upper arm where the shot was made. I asked some of the military people where they were from. No one from Houston or Texas; but Tucson, North Carolina, Idaho, and South Carolina. It was very organized. There wasn’t any instructions to not exercise so I biked today.

I used my new for 2021 beginning of the ride which put the ride distance at 33.78 miles. This different starting route adds a little over a mile to the ride. Previously I wrote that I didn’t think I could reach my 400 road miles goal for February but maybe I was premature on that. I only need 47.3 miles to reach it and with 2 potential biking days left I could do it. Hopefully the weather will cooperate. I biked 159.96 miles this week so if I reach my goal it will be the first 200 mile week this year. For the month I rode 508.45 miles combining road and Zwift miles. Not too bad considering the February weather. With today’s miles 2021 YTD moved past 2020 YTD but only by 7 miles.

Today’s weather at the start and 1:54 PM finish: start 74 (77% humidity, 65.8 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind SE 5 mph; finish 76 (70% humidity, 65.6 dew point), overcast, wind S 8 mph. I overdressed for the ride except when I went west over Lake Houston and the wind chill caused me to zip up my jacket. I wore shorts, long sleeve jersey, and windbreaker jacket.

My legs were not powerful today. I think yesterday used my reserve so today was a slow bike ride. My overall average speed didn’t get to 13 mph until the 24 or 25 mile point. While the wind wasn’t that strong I couldn’t increase my speed in the headwind. The return ride from FM 2100 was easier. I stopped at the church on Fairlake Lane for a few minutes of rest before tackling FM 1960 over Lake Houston. To show how the power was on the ride I spent 56% of the biking time in power zones 1 and 2. Significantly more than yesterday’s 41%. The bike ride summary from Golden Cheetah.

BCycle booms in Houston with bikeshare program

Derrick Shore | www.click2houston.com

HOUSTON – Here in Houston, it’s safe to say most of us would like to spend less time sitting in a car. Now, with bike trails becoming even more connected, our city’s bikeshare program – BCycle – is booming.

Bikeshare allows riders to rent bikes from a kiosk and then return to any other kiosk, short term.

“We offer this really fun, sustainable, healthy and actually one of the most affordable public transit options,” said Abby Fernandez, BCycle’s Marketing and Outreach Manager. “Currently we have …

Practices & Products for Painful Pedaling

A Dude Abikes | adudeabikes.com

I’ve been grousing about a body part that’s been plaguing me for a while. It was an issue in the past, but cropped up recently again toward the end of bicycling 500 days in a row (which I’ve pushed past — for now). Also, I’m no spring chicken anymore, although I often think I am. Most of the points I wanted to mention were already included in my post After the Fall: What to Do When You Come Off Your Bicycle, But that was November of 2019, so some updates are worth noting. Let’s dive right in. There’s water in the pool, so it’ll be painless, I promise! …

Strong Average Speed, Overcast and Windy Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on February 25, 2021 by Rick AnkrumFebruary 25, 2021

The clouds remain and the temperature fell a couple of degrees but no reason to stay off the bike. I have a very important appointment this afternoon (get the first dose of the vaccine) so I started the bike ride at 10:28 AM. At first I was going to take a different route but I changed my mind and rode the “Forest Cove – Oakhurst – Valley Ranch” route. This route was 27.55 miles long today. I’m getting closer to my road mile goal for February with 318.9 miles and a 400 mile goal. Combining road miles and Zwift miles the total for February stands 474.66 miles, 25 miles away from the combined goal of 500 miles. I rode my Canyon Endurace CF SLX bike today. I was going to air the tires up yesterday but I forgot. I will do that before the next ride.

Weather conditions: start 71 (81% humidity, 65.3 dew point), overcast, wind S 7 mph; finish 72 (77% humidity, 64.1 dew point), overcast, wind SE 13 mph. Since it was a couple of degrees cooler I changed my attire to shorts, a long sleeve thermal jersey, and a windbreaker jacket. Several times during the ride I was in a light mist but either it moved or I rode out of it. The jacket came in handy with wind increasing during the ride.

This route was conducive to biking without stops which helped my average speed. I built it up to 14.5 mph at times but most of the ride was 14.4 mph. Headed south from Valley Ranch the headwind tried to slow me but I powered through it. Reflecting that the bike ride summary data shows only 41% of the biking time was in power zones 1 and 2 leaving 59% in zones 3 through 7. 17% was in zones 6 and 7 which good for me.
