About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

February 2021 Executive Director’s Report

Joe Cutrufo | bikehouston.org

To me, the most exciting thing about working in bike advocacy is seeing demand for better bikeways turn into tangible changes on our streets and trails. Especially in a city where for decades streets were built with only one user in mind, it’s a victory for BikeHouston’s mission whenever some right-of-way is turned into dedicated space for riding bikes. And it’s a victory that foretells more victories—investments in bike lanes and trails has a way of creating demand for more bike lanes and trails.

Lucky for people like us who ride bikes in Houston, our local leaders have taken note of our insatiable appetite, and they’re responding by redesigning streets and filling gaps in the bike network. Here are just a few of the changes coming in the next several months: …

Chilly Over The Lake, Strong Wind Gusts Round Trip Bike Ride to FM 2100

Texbiker.net Posted on February 24, 2021 by Rick AnkrumFebruary 24, 2021

The days of blue sky ended today but the warm temperature didn’t. Rotating the bike direction to the south and east I started at 11:09 AM. I rode my Lynskey R300 bike as I set out on my “Atascocita – Walden – FM 2100” route. Monday I tired to ride this route but traffic was backed up on Fairlake Lane when I got there. No such problem today. The bike ride went 34.13 miles boosting my week total to 98.63 miles and the month to 447.11 miles. I need 53 miles to reach my combined goal of 500 miles though this will not be the breakdown I planned. In February 2020 I biked 644.11 miles. I can get closer to that number but not beat it. Last year I rode the Jalapeno 100 on the 29th which made a big contribution to the 644 miles that won’t happen this year. Maybe 2023. Today was the second time riding this route in 2021.

I rode east of FM 2100 to add to the ride distance to get over 34 miles which is longer than usual for this route. I altered the early part of the route to increase the distance.

Once we got rid of the winter storm from last week this week’s weather is trying make up for the cold with spring like weather. Weather conditions today: start 74 (72% humidity, 64.3 dew point), overcast, wind SW 8 mph gusts 17 mph; finish 78 (64% humidity, 65.2 dew point), overcast, wind SW 7 mph gusts 17 mph. Much more wind to contend with on today’s bike ride. With the warm temperature I was tempted to alter my kit but thankfully I resisted and wore shorts, long sleeve jersey, and a windbreaker jacket. The jacket kept me from getting clattering teeth both times I cross Lake Houston today. The wind was very chilly as it blew off of the lake water unlike Monday. The gusts tried to work me over but the route turned to the east just in time for my legs to recover. The ride back to Kingwood spent less time with a headwind. Before the ride I stopped as I walked out the gate and aired up the tires on the Lynskey to 80 psi. This improved the rolling resistance reducing the pedaling effort some. I could feel the difference as each pedal stroke moved the bike forward and the bumps were crisp.

I found a website that creates a Zwift like photo from any photo you upload. Zwiftirl.com. Here is one from today’s bike ride.

77 Degrees, Blue Sky Bike Ride to Tavola

Texbiker.net Posted on February 23, 2021 by Rick AnkrumFebruary 23, 2021

Some fantastic spring weather today in February. I was able to start today’s bike ride earlier with wheel rolling at 11:28 AM. Not waiting on anybody today. I ride my Canyon Endurace bike north on my “New Caney – Tavola – Valley Ranch” route. The bike ride went 36.09 miles. this boosted my road miles for February to 257.2 leaving 143 miles to reach my goal for February. I don’t think I going to get there but I may get close. Including Zwift miles my total is 412.99, only 87 miles short of the combined goal of 500 miles. This one looks more reachable.

The video shows the bright blue sky and excellent spring weather. Weather conditions for the bike ride: start 74 (30% humidity, 40.8 dew point), a few clouds, wind S 10 mph; finish 77 (30% humidity, 43.6 dew point), a few clouds, wind S 10 mph. No need for leg warmers and I probably could’ve swapped a short sleeve jersey for the jacket but I wasn’t sure how the wind chill would be. I wore a new pair of Bellwether Endurance Gel shorts for the ride. These replaced a pair that I first wore on 8-2-2019.

By the time I reached Tavola I built my average speed to 14.2 mph. I thought once I turned back to the south that would go down but I held it until the southbound US59 frontage road at Kellington before Kingwood Drive. For some reason I seem to lose about a .1 mph average speed riding from Kingwood Place Drive to the frontage road. There is a slight incline on Kellington but I try to power through it, sometimes successfully and other times not. Power zone riding time according to Golden Cheetah was typical.
