About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Cyclists in Suits, Texas Bike Lobby Day

BikeTexas.org

2021 brings us opportunities to make Texas a great place to ride a bike, and a key part of that is meeting with our legislators on our virtual lobby day, March 22. Your voice is crucial to keeping lawmakers focused on bicycle access, education, and safety.

Due to the ongoing pandemic, Cyclists in Suits is an online-only event for 2021. Since there is no need to travel to Austin, we anticipate more folks than ever will be able to participate. Everyone who rides a bike in Texas is encouraged to attend, including teens – now is a great time to introduce young Texans to participating in our democracy. Experience in advocacy is …

The Wind Wore Me Down Returning To Kingwood From Tavola

Texbiker.net Posted on February 3, 2021 by Rick AnkrumFebruary 3, 2021

The wind wore me down on today’s bike ride. One thing Zwift doesn’t simulate is wind. I rode great on the way to Tavola but the return to Kingwood featured a 14 mph SE headwind. My legs handled it for awhile but slowly my overall average speed fell from 13.9 mph to 13.2 mph by the time I finished at 2:50 PM.

The bike ride began at 11:54 AM as I rode out the driveway on my Lynskey R300 bike. This is the first outdoor bike ride in February and I wanted to make up the miles I fell behind toward my 400 mile goal for the month. I need to average 14.3 miles per day to hit my goal. Headed north on my “New Caney – Tavola – Valley Ranch” route this usually is a 34+ mile bike ride. Today I rode 35.14 miles.

I waited for the temperature to go up a degree or two before getting ready. It still felt chilly at the start even though I wore shorts, leg warmers, a long sleeve thermal jersey, windbreaker jacket, and half finger gloves. Whenever I was in the shade I felt the coolness and the wind seemed to emphasize it. Weather conditions: start 65 (59% humidity, 50.6 dew point), partly cloudy, wind SE 12 mph; finish 67 (58% humidity, 51.4 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind SE14 mph. The forecast dangled a high of 71 but I don’t think it ever made it. Tomorrow the forecast says 80 is possible. I will be riding much warmer then.

Strava said today’s bike ride was harder than my usual efforts. I think fighting the headwind contributed to that.

The ride summary data in Golden Cheetah looks like this.

  • 2-3-2021 Golden Cheetah Bike Ride Summary-1
  • 2-3-2021 Golden Cheetah Bike Ride Summary-2

49% of the riding time was in power zones 1 and 2 leaving 51% for zones 3 through 7. Average power came in at 107 watts with a max of 439 watts.

Contractor chosen for portions of Hike and Bike Trail

by: PJ Green | www.texomashomepage.com

WICHITA FALLS (KFDX/KJTL) — City officials have chosen a contractor to work on a portion of the Hike and Bike Trail.

Ride in Control: What does this mean to you?
IMBA describes riding out of control as speed, inattentiveness, and rudeness. We all enjoy riding the trails and avoiding conflicts. What is fast for one rider isn't for another. #rideresponsibly pic.twitter.com/ctwywX6DiT

— STORM (@STORM_MTB) February 2, 2021

What is acceptable trail use for one user group isn't for another. That being said we also have a large population of racers who are doing their best to stay fit and get ready for the next race which is highly commendable and completely encouraged. #rideresponsibly pic.twitter.com/scmfYt8kFH

Will I Become A Mountain Goat Biking in Zwift? 2nd Day Over 1,400 Ft. Climbing

Texbiker.net Posted on February 2, 2021 by Rick AnkrumFebruary 2, 2021

Without doing any research I thought today’s Zwift bike ride was in France. The French ride description and a course name i wasn’t familiar with added to my mistake. It wasn’t until the KOM when I saw Yorkshire that I realized I wasn’t riding in France. According to ZwiftInsider.com (where I should’ve looked before the bike ride), “One of six routes rolled out with Zwift’s UCI 2019 Worlds map, “Royal Pump Room 8” is a “figure of 8” route which covers all roads in both directions. This is the longest Yorkshire route in game.” The ride lasted 60 minutes but I had no idea how much climbing would be in that time. I ended up biking 14.91 miles and climbing 1,490 feet. This is two days in a row with over 1,400 feet of climbing. My legs are getting a workout. Next Zwift bike ride needs to be a flat one. There were 16% climbs where I slowed to 3 or 4 mph. The pace was open with no fence though I did see a sweep who eventually passed me. I stayed with the first group for about 10 minutes before getting dropped and picked up by the following group. Around 40 minutes I lost contact with groups and soloed to the finish.

The profile in Zwiftpower.com and Stava show a hilly course with no many flat or descending stretches. I shift gears a lot which I don’t do much when ride the roads around home where it is flat. Without the full results in Zwiftpower I placed 15th though the bike ride wasn’t a race. The Zwift event information reports 418 people registered. I earned a new personal record on the New Yorkshire KOM according to Zwift. Strava showed 4 medals: 1 gold, 1 silver, and 2 bronze. When I finished the bike ride I noticed at the top of the companion app that 44,414 people were using Zwift.
