About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Anavid Reyes | www.click2houston.com

HOUSTON – As a whole, we’ve been studying and counting cars on our roads for more than 70 years, but data on cyclists and pedestrians is limited.

We know a lot about where cars and trucks are going, but The Texas Department of Transportation and other agencies don’t have the same amount of information for bicyclists and pedestrians.

TxDOT has teamed up with Texas A&M Transportation Institute researchers to evaluate the best pedestrian bicycle monitoring technology to get an accurate pulse of those who walk or bike on our Texas roadways.

Through their research, data has …

Big Yellow Machines Inhabit FM 2100 Construction On The Bike Ride To Huffman

Texbiker.net Posted on January 26, 2021 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 26, 2021

The temperature reversed yesterday’s move starting cooler and warming up. Today’s bike ride headed south and east on my “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” route. Riding my Canyon Endurace bike I began at 11:11 AM, 5 minutes earlier than Monday. I also finished 5 minutes earlier at 1:37 PM. The bike ride covered 32.81 miles in 2:20:00. I am now within 7 miles of reaching my 300 mile goal for January. I noticed the Canyon Endurace is now at 20,395 miles.

I wasn’t the only cyclist out riding. Before leaving Kingwood I passed 3 cyclists. On Fairlake Lane 2 cyclists passed me and I saw them again on FM 1960 as I rode west.

Riding north on FM 2100 the road to the right of the barriers is now gone so I rode in the main lanes. I will pause riding on FM 2100 until the construction works allows me to ride on the new road.

Weather conditions: start 69 (36%humidity, 40.9 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind NE 9 mph; 72 (33% humidity, 41 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind N 9 mph. I wore shorts, a long sleeve thermal jersey, a windbreaker jacket, and new Pearl Izumi Red Elite Gel gloves.

  • 1-26-2021 New Pearl Izumi Elite Gel Gloves-1
  • 1-26-2021 New Pearl Izumi Elite Gel Gloves-2

No more new gloves for now but I do have a new long sleeve jersey waiting to be worn. My legs were chilly at the start but after 15 minutes they warmed up. There were times when I felt chilly like when I crossed Lake Houston but overall I dressed correctly. Wind wasn’t an issue today most of the ride.

Strava told me today’s bike ride was harder than my usual efforts.

According to the power breakdown in Golden Cheetah 49% of my riding times was in zones 1 and 2 leaving 51% in zones 3 through 7.

SH 3 from Richey Street to FM 518

www.txdot.gov

TxDOT Houston District proposes to add bike lanes on the outside shoulders of north bound and south bound SH 3 between Richey Street to FM 518, spanning a length of 14.25 miles. New Trail Review – Mary Moore Searight park

By AustinBike | austinmountainbiking.com

Went out last week to have a look around. I had ridden here a few years back and walked away saying "not worth the trip." It was pretty deep in the south side and only had about 5-6 miles of trail, much of it seemed to be double track or non-inspiring singletrack. But a lot has changed since then. Not as much because of the trail itself, but the connection to SATN. Now we are at the point where a ride that starts here has connection to another huge network of SATN trails.

I started out by doing the mileage in the …

Weather Change Awaited On Bike Ride to Roman Forest Blvd.

Texbiker.net Posted on January 25, 2021 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 25, 2021

The fog let up and the temperature went up for today’s bike ride. The streets were still damp in places but not enough to spray up as I rode. The last outdoor bike ride was last Tuesday and it felt good to be pedaling outdoors. I pressed the start button the Bolt computer at 11:16 AM as I rolled off riding my Lynskey R300 bike. The route headed north to Roman Forest Blvd. where i turned back to the south. By the time I finished at 1:42 PM I rode 32.56 miles climbing a whopping 33 feet. Not much climbing compared to my Zwift bike rides. This pushed my road miles for January to 260.2, only 40 miles short of my goal.

Weather conditions: 75 (82% humidity, 69.1 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind SW 14 mph gusts 22 mph; finish 71 (45% humidity, 48.4 dew point), overcast, wind NW 12 mph. I decided to wear two new items for today’s bike ride: Pearl Izumi Elite Gel Gloves (black) and a Voler long sleeve jersey. Little did I know the weather change waiting at New Caney. Riding north the wind helped get me to New Caney but as I pull onto the US59 frontage road from Payne Road I felt the wind shift from the SW to the NW and the drop in temperature caught my attention. The front I saw on the radar before leaving arrived and I worried about the chill before finishing the ride. When I made the u-turn at Roman Forest Blvd. I experienced a rare event biking, a tailwind when I biked north and a tailwind biking south, though it was a chilly one going south. I sped up to get home bumping my average speed to 14.8 mph at one point, thanks to the urgency and tailwind. As I pedaled to a stop at FM 1314 headed south the chill seemed to let up from that point on. I think I caught the leading edge of the front. As you can see in the conditions above the humidity and dew point dropped from the start time to the finish time and I felt the difference.

The new clothing.

No medals on the few Strava segments on my “New Caney – Roman Forest Blvd – Valley Ranch” route.
