About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

ISO Example: Staggered Crossing of Arterial Street

flangehead | www.bikeforums.net

I am working on a ~4 mile bike route proposal that will use suburban residential streets. Most of the arterial crossings have traffic signals, but we have one complicated crossing. The east-west bike route streets are staggered and the crossing is about halfway between two traffic signals. I have placed some graphics below to show the area.

I’m looking for examples (both good and bad) on how this has been handled in other places.

Option A works pretty good right now. A cyclist only has to wait briefly for a hole in the traffic to be created by the traffic light ¼ mile away. That allows a move to the protected left-turn only lane, where again it is …

Exactly! And that is why we need traffic-calming and protected bike lanes. A mentality change will only happen when more motorists become cyclists, so the #RioGrandeValley roads have to become much safer for cyclists.

Strong South Wind Couldn’t Keep Me From Reaching My January Goal

Texbiker.net Posted on January 30, 2021 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 30, 2021

No Zwift bike ride today. A real bike ride outdoors started at 10:29 AM after I waited for the temperature to go up a few more degrees. I rode my Canyon Endurace bike headed south and east on my “Atascocita – FM 2100 – Walden” route. An overcast sky and strong wind awaited as I rolled out; 67 degrees with the south wind at 16 mph and gusts to 24 mph. It didn’t take long to feel the wind as I rode through Sherwood Trails Village in Kingwood. I dressed warm with shorts, leg warmers, a long sleeve thermal jersey, a windbreaker jacket, and my new Pearl Izumi half finger gloves. For the first 15 minutes I felt chilly but when my body heat increased I was comfortable for the rest of the bike ride.

At the beginning of the ride I needed to bike 7 miles to reach my goal for January. I biked 30.3 miles so the goal has been secured. Last January up to the 30th I rode 602 miles and I am at 635 miles this year. Maybe I will add to it tomorrow.

A couple of days ago I replaced the carbon Lezyne frame pump with Lezyne Lezyne Sport Drive HP Hand Pump Black. The carbon resin was coming off and the new pump put out a bigger volume per stroke and the size was easier to hold. Now I hope I don’t need to use it anytime soon.

With the late start I didn’t expect to see any other cyclists but they were out biking too. I saw two before I left Kingwood and more as I rode east over Lake Houston. They rode to the west. Then I saw two more on FM 1960 at Atascocita Shores Drive when I turned south they went north. Biking north along W Lake Houston Parkway three more passed me. So I wasn’t alone in wanting to ride outside.

The road construction on FM 2100 meant a u-turn when I got there rather than biking north. The headwind then changed to a side wind until I made the right turn onto Fairlake Lane to FM 1960. Biking west over Lake Houston required a firm grip on the handlebar because the wind pushed the front wheel unexpectedly numerous times. The traffic sometimes can break the wind but not today.

Strava reported this ride was harder than my usual efforts probably from fighting the wind. My max watts in Golden Cheetah was 519. higher than normal.

Fort Worth’s Mayor Price Has Been Transformative

By Eric Griffey | spectrumlocalnews.com

FORT WORTH, Texas — In an emotional speech at Fort Worth City Hall two weeks ago, Mayor Betsy Price announced to a smattering of reporters that she would not seek a sixth term. She told the press she wanted to spend more time with her family.

“There’s no perfect answer as to the time when you should step aside, but you should step aside when you have the feeling that you’re ready,” she said in her speech. “Just as I felt called to do this job, I feel called to step aside.”

Her announcement elicited strong reactions across the local political spectrum. Well-wishers heaped flowery praise on the longest-tenured mayor in Fort Worth’s history, noting the city’s enormous growth under her steady …

… One of the enduring images of Mayor Betsy Price will be the many times she, donned in her traditional skin-tight cycling clothes, pedaled for the cameras during one of her “rolling town halls.” An avid cyclist, Price used her hobby as a way to peddle pieces of her agenda while listening to the public. …

What We Learned from Tracking Cycling Deaths for a Year

Maura Fox and Luke Whelan | www.outsideonline.com

With the help of the nonprofit BikeMaps.org, we analyzed the data we collected on bicyclists killed by drivers in 2020 and found some surprising takeaways

In December, the driver of a box truck plowed into a group of cyclists riding along U.S. Highway 95 south of Las Vegas. Five people died in the crash, and it was later discovered that the driver had methamphetamine in his system. At Outside, we were horrified by the tragedy, which was covered in local and national news, but we also knew it was part of a troubling trend: record numbers of cyclists (and thousands of pedestrians) on our nation’s roads are being killed by drivers often without any media attention beyond a brief local news story. In 2018, 857 cyclists died in crashes with drivers, the deadliest year for people on bikes since 1990. In 2019, while the total number of deaths dipped slightly, to 846, cities like New York recorded their highest number of cyclist fatalities ever.

Last January, in response to those disburbing numbers, we launched the #2020CyclingDeaths project, which aimed to track every person on a bike killed by a driver in the U.S. over the course of the year. In the end, we recorded 697 cyclist deaths. Since we were only able to count …

On the Lege: January 2021

www.biketexas.org

The 2021 Texas legislative session will be like no other. While the Capitol will be open, most members’ offices will be closed to visitors. As a result of COVID-19 precautions and out of concern for legislators, their staffs, and BikeTexas volunteers and staff, all of our legislative meetings this session will be virtual.

That doesn’t mean there isn’t work to do, but in order to maximize our time, resources, and the opportunities available, we’re focusing on a limited number of bills this session:

  1. We’re putting the final touches on a resolution to provide ongoing funding opportunities for communities to build signature trail networks or their part of the 8000-mile Texas Bicycle Tourism Trail Network. Inspired by the …

Black History Bike Ride’s Talib Abdullahi on the Power of Storytelling

www.austinmonthly.com

After attending last summer’s Black Lives Matter protests in the wake of George Floyd’s death, Talib Abdullahi hopped on his bike and melded his two life passions: cycling and history. The result was the first-ever Black History Social Ride—an event that inspired more than 400 Austinites to ride along with him as he explored the city’s most important (and oft-overlooked) Black history sites. Abdullahi joined Austin Monthly senior editor David Leffler via Instagram Live to discuss the project’s ongoing expansion, detail his new partnership with Six Square, and share some of his favorite historical places to take riders.

The key points they discussed include: …

Tour de Zwift Stage 6: France’s Route Grand Vitesse or High Speed Road

Texbiker.net Posted on January 29, 2021 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 29, 2021

Stage 6 of the Tour de Zwift went live this morning. I signed up for the 12:03 PM event in Group C bike ride. The route moved to France on the R.G.V. course. R.G.V. is short for route grand vitesse, or “high speed road” according to ZwiftInsider.com. This was my first time on this course. The ride was hilly but not overly so with 437 feet of climbing spread along the 15.83 miles I biked. Since the bike ride went through France the roadside included many sunflower plants in bloom. My 20.6 mph average speed reflected to the high speed road description. I found myself watching the feet climbed more than the miles biked because I am a flatlander and climbing is a challenge. Today’s miles put my month total at 605 miles combining road and Zwift miles. I more than met my Zwift goal of 150 miles but I need 7 more miles to reach my road miles goal of 300. Two more days left and Saturday’s weather looks favorable.

After the start I managed to stay with the large front group for about 10 minutes before they rode away. Not long after that I found another group to ride with to keep the draft factor in play. Then I drifted between groups and riding with 3 or 4 other riders until the finish. Going up the hills I gained on some people and going down they moved ahead of me. As I approached the finish I stood at 579th out of 747 “nearby” Zwifters. At the same point the Marina Sprint Reverse standings board put me at 238th out of 343. Over in ZwiftPower.com of the 409 people with a profile I was in 372nd position.

The first place finisher took 15:39 to complete the course versus my 45:13. I was happy to stay with other Zwifters for most of the bike ride.

Strava listed over 87 other people biking the same course so far.
