WACO, TX — The biking community in Waco consists of hundreds of people.

In fact, the club added an additional 90 people during the pandemic.

When one of their own dies in a cycling accident, they do all they can to honor them.

TDZ Stage 5: Richmond LIbby Hill After Party Bike Ride

When I saw Stage 5 of the Tour de Zwift available in the events today I changed my mind about biking outdoors. Outside the temperature was 73 but the streets were still wet from the fog this morning. This made the decision easier.

Stage 5 Group C Group Ride took place on the Richmond Libby Hill After Party course. I’ve biked in Zwift on the Richmond course but not this exact one. My wife and I attended the UCI Worlds in Richmond. The course description said 20.7 miles with 354 feet of climbing. About 200 feet of climbing waited until the last 2 miles. I hoped it would be spread out a little more. My ride was 20.96 miles and 354 feet of climbing. The nearby Zwifters board showed 1563 and I stayed around 1200 to 1223. I managed to stay with other riders most of the ride which means the draft lightens the load some. In ZwiftPower.com results I came in at 230 out of 266 but not everyone has a profile there.

Looking at the Golden Cheetah bike ride summary I kept the watts above my typical outside ride.

Strava data showed a number of medals earned: 4 gold, 6 silver, and 10 bronze.

Wrapping up the week I biked every day, Monday and Tuesday on the road and 5 days in Zwift. I surpassed my over mileage goal for January of 450 with 490.53 miles. The miles were not as I planned: 227.6 road miles versus my planned 300; 262.9 miles in Zwift versus 150 planned.

Cyclist killed on Thursday night identified as 56-year-old Texarkana man

A man killed Thursday night while riding a bicycle on West Seventh Street has been identified as Herman Sitzes, 56, of Texarkana, Texas.

TEXARKANA, Texas — A man killed Thursday night while riding a bicycle on West Seventh Street has been identified as Herman Sitzes, 56, of Texarkana, Texas.

The accident happened at about 8:30 p.m. Thursday.

Investigators believe Sitzes was trying to cross the 3500 block of West Seventh Street on his bicycle when he was struck by a westbound Lincoln Navigator and killed, said Shawn Vaughn, spokesman for the Texarkana Texas Police Department.

Sitzes was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the Navigator was not injured. No charges are expected to be filed against the driver, according to investigators.

Northeast Texas Trail Improves In Red River County

Work Continues on Northeast Texas Trail in Red River County

Texas Department of Transportation officials announced that phase two of a project to upgrade and improve a portion of the Northeast Texas Trail in Red River County began Jan. 15.

The contractor, Encino Landscape Inc., was granted 168 working days, weather permitting, to complete this project valued at more than $682,000. The target completion date is fall 2021, officials said.

The contractor will construct bicycle infrastructure improvements along the trail from Bagwell to Clarksville. This work will extend along 6.1 miles of the trail, beginning …

Zwift Bike Ride on Innsbruck Roule Ma Poule

Maybe the weather will dry out some and warm up enough for me to bike ride outdoors soon. Today the temperature hung just below my 60 degree threshold with the humidity at 98% as my usual ride time neared. I made the decision to ride in Zwift and looked for events. I found the ZSUN Saturday Social Ride (D) on the Innsbruck Roule Ma Poule course beginning at 12:10 PM. This left plenty of time to get everything ready. This was the first time on this course so I wasn’t sure what to expect. The ride would last 60 minutes. I rode 60 minutes traveling 15.61 miles and climbing 659 feet. No steep climbs but several lasted longer than I preferred.

As the group left the starting pen I found a spot with a group. The leader put the fence in position but not too long after that I started getting “Return to Group” warnings but no countdown. The riders started to separate into bunches and the front one I was in sped up and I fell back to the next one. I gained some positions when the climbs began and found a bunch that I matched their pace. I rode along until around the 32 minute point my Bluetooth disconnected and the companion app stopped sending data to Zwift. In the past I got off the bike and messed around to find a fix but this time I stayed on the bike using the keyboard beside my Blue Norcross AL bike. I changed WiFi connections, opened up the pairing settings in Zwift and the Bluetooth connection started again. When I rejoined Zwift I was by myself with the group I was with up the road. Not too long after that a solo ride came up and we rode together for awhile. I’m not sure if I left him or he left me but I rode to the finish solo.

According to the sprint standings I came in at 343 out of 345 thanks to the Bluetooth problem. Looking at ZwiftPower.com results I was 127 out of 163. Not all riders have a profile in ZwiftPower.com. I marked my place with a red line. The course profile shows the two major climbs.

Not many segments in Strava for this course and no medals either.
