About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

100-mile trail project will connect San Antonio to Austin – but you’ll have to wait

Karly Williams | www.mysanantonio.com

A new parks project in Central Texas is on the way, but you’ll have to wait over a decade to enjoy it completely.

The Great Springs Project, a major feat announced by the National Park Service in December of 2020, will aim to connect four of Texas’ Great Springs between San Antonio and Austin.

When completed, the goal of the project is to add 50,000 acres of protected National Park Land over zones of the Edwards Aquifer that links San Antonio Springs, Comal Springs, San Marcos Springs, and Barton Springs.

Hike-and-bike trails will be built to connect the sprawling project, ensuring residents in every part of the Austin-San Antonio corridor have access to …

The PACK Wind Down Bike Ride on Watopia’s Waistband

Texbiker.net Posted on January 22, 2021 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 22, 2021

More 63 degrees and wet weather at my house called for a Zwift bike ride. The PACK Weekly wind Down (D) fit my time and ability. The start time of 1:05 PM gave me more than enough time to get prepared. The ride planned showed 18.7 miles but I ended up biking 19.0 miles in 1:06:52 with 335 feet of climbing. 385 other Zwifters registered for the ride.

I used the ANT+ dongle to connect the sensors and smart trainer. It worked well with not disconnects that I saw. There was a lag between the Zwift companion app dashboard data and with the in game data reporting mileage about 2/10’s of mile less.

As the clock counted down I ramped up my watts to 150 or so to not be left in the dust. The bike ride was to average 1.3 – 1.5 W/Kg but I think no one got the memo. I pulled away with the group and found a place to take advantage of the draft. Biking at 22 mph the group separated from majority. No fence on the ride meant everyone could go at the speed and W/Kg they felt comfortable with. I stayed with that group for several miles but when we went under the water I fell behind and couldn’t regroup. I maintained my speed and waited for a following bunch to catch me and joined them. This lasted until about 7 miles to go and they sped up more than I could match. From there to the finish I biked alone with a few riders passing me.

Watopia’s Waistband is relatively flat as the profile shows in the ZwiftPower image and Strava.

Not everyone in the ride has a ZwiftPower.com profile but 131 did. I ranked 32nd (yellow highlight and red line).

Strava awarded medals for some of the segments in the bike ride: 4 gold and 3 bronze.

Big Bend National Park To Build New Trail For Hiking, Not Biking Share

By Kurt Repanshek | www.nationalparkstraveler.org

Big Bend National Park in Texas will be building a hiking trail near Panther Junction where there long had been discussions to build a multi-use trail open to mountain biking, Superintendent Bob Krumenaker announced Wednesday.

The National Park Service began planning for a trail in this area in 2010, when it published an Environmental Assessment for a new trail-based recreational opportunity. The original decision, documented in a Finding of No Significant Impact in 2012, was to build a 10-mile multi-use trail, which would allow mountain bike use.

That proved to be a highly controversial issue. At the time, the rationale for the mountain bike trail was …

Late Start, 3rd Place Finish ZZRC Group Ride on Watopia’s Sand and Sequoias

Texbiker.net Posted on January 21, 2021 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 21, 2021

I held out until 11:40 AM waiting for the fog and temperature to lift. Walking outside I saw wet pavement and water dripping from the house. That made the decision to ride Zwift easy. I signed up for the ZZRC Group Ride (D) on Watopia’s Sand and Sequoias course starting at 12:20 PM. The ride lasted 60 minutes. When I finished the hour I biked 16.33 miles and climbed 610 feet.

It wasn’t a smooth start as the companion app on my phone wouldn’t stay connected to pair my sensors. After checking the network and trying again I inserted my new ANT+ dongle in my desktop computer. A few seconds later I went through the pairing process in Zwift. The ANT+ adapter showed up and I got on my Blue Norcross AL bike but the group had already left. About 4 minutes behind I caught two stragglers and settled into a steady pace. The course was relatively flat and I didn’t think too much that I rode up the hills without the Wahoo Snap trainer making it harder. At the 35 minute point I checked the pairing and saw the trainer power connection not working. I opened the tab, selected the ANT+ adapter and the trainer started making me pedal hard on the hills. I finished 149th out of 150 in the sprints but Zwiftpower.com shows me at 3rd. I am surprised.

This was the second ride on the Watopia Sand and Sequoias course. The first was on 1/7/2021 but for 12.75 miles versus today’s 16.34 miles. The difference was the time, 43:39 and 1:00:56, respectively.

Strava counted some medals: 1 gold and 3 bronze. A significant reduction from yesterday’s Zwift event.
