About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

100-mile nature trail connecting Austin to San Antonio springs forward

By Melissa Gaskill | austin.culturemap.com

Imagine a 100-mile network of trails for hiking and biking that runs from the Texas Capitol in Austin to the Alamo in San Antonio, connecting along the way to Barton, San Marcos, Comal, and San Antonio springs. This is the vision of the Great Springs Project, launched in 2018 and currently working on a master plan to make it a reality.

The route will create a corridor of protected lands over the Edwards Aquifer recharge zone, which feeds all four of these significant springs.

“Our board president and co-founder, Deborah Morin, had the idea and vision 25 years ago,” says Emma Lindrose-Siegel, the …

Door Key Road

Winter 2020 "And the sky is not cloudy all day." So goes the song Home Home on the Range. Yet we do have cloudy days and sometimes rain. Have you ever gone for a ride and get completely distracted by the terrain or sky? This is another post I found in my draft section. It was a nice winter day, so Christine and I went to one of our favorite ride locations, Door Key Road. …

Did the Lockhart-Fentress-Staples-Martindale Loop. Fentress was the most beautiful stretch. Avoid the Goforth area. Take either camino road back to Niederwald or Bebee road to Old San Antonio road. The goforth area has packs of wild pitbulls roaming free (a local also told me it’s not safe) from BikingATX

Blue Mound Road construction project proposed in north Fort Worth

By Ian Pribanic | communityimpact.com

The Texas Department of Transportation is currently designing future improvements to FM 156, or Blue Mound Road, in north Fort Worth.

The 5.4-mile project would reconstruct a portion of roadway from US 287 north to Intermodal Parkway. The roadway would be widened from a two-lane road into a four-lane, divided road with raised-curb medians. In addition to curb-and-gutter improvements, the proposed $53.6 million project would include upgrades to sidewalks, shared-use paths and bicycle paths in the area. …

Where is TXBRA in 2021?

By Paul, Drop Bar, Texas: A cycling podcast | achnor.fm

It’s a new year, and I am optimistic. If you are a roadie however, you may have been wondering what is up with TXBRA. Will there be a road season? Why have there been no updates? Michael Gacki, TXBRA member-at-large for North Texas and I spoke about TXBRA’s current state.

Wind Driven Kingwood – FM 1485 – Kingwood Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on January 18, 2021 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 18, 2021

Second day in a row with weather above my cutoff threshold. I started at 12:22 PM after waiting a little longer for it warm up a degree or two. Riding my Canyon Endurace bike I started out on my “Kingwood – FM 1485 – Kingwood” route. The 14 mph SE wind propelled me north until I made the u-turn under US59 for the return ride to Kingwood. At some point during the ride the wind stepped up to 17 mph from the SE requiring more watts but I held my average speed at 14.4 mph until I exited Kellington Drive onto the US59 southbound frontage road to make the u-turn at Kingwood Drive where it dropped to 14.3 mph. From there to the 2:47 PM finish my average speed decreased as I rode on side streets with stop signs.

Weather conditions at the start and finish. I dressed like yesterday with shorts, leg warmers, thermal long sleeve jersey, and a windbreaker jacket. I was comfortable once I warmed up but the strong wind tried to chill me.

At the Caney Creek u-turn I expected to see the man living in his truck under the bridge with his dogs but his spot was clean and he was gone. The dogs always barked wildly as I rode by and he would yell at them to be quiet.

Compared to my recent Zwift rides today was pancake flat with 79 feet of climbing.

Today’s ride puts me in front of the pace to reach my 300 mile goal for January with 104 miles left. The next 2 days’ weather forecast look favorable for more outdoor biking.

Today’s route from RideWithGPS.com

Warm Enough to Bike Outdoors

Texbiker.net Posted on January 17, 2021 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 17, 2021

The weather finally warmed up enough for me to bike outdoors. It helped by starting at 1:46 PM after I got home from church. I rode my “Forest Cove – Oakhurst – Valley Ranch” route for 27.66 miles. I finished at 3:50 PM. The miles helped me almost get back on track to my 300 miles goal for January. It felt good turning the pedals on my Lynskey R300 after Zwifting Friday and Saturday.

How I stand on my goals so far.
