About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Sound Muffled, Weather Muggy, New Mic Setup – FM 2100 Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on November 10, 2020 by Rick AnkrumNovember 10, 2020

Not the early start on today’s bike ride because I worked on the new mic setup for the GoPro Hero 7 Black camera. Amazon delivered it 5 days earlier than the projected arrival date in time to use it on today’s bike ride. The new mic resembles the Rode mic but cost about $40 less. After taking it out of the box and nice case it looked almost identical, It is the Comica CVM-VM10II Full Metal Compact On Camera Cardioid Directional Mini Shotgun Video Microphone. (No affiliate link).

Thinking about how to mount it on my Canyon Endurace bike I tried sliding the cold shoe mount into the rear light mounting bracket on my Lynskey R300. It fit nicely and tightening locking nut down held it securely. I remembered another light bracket in the garage that I refused to throw away and checked it for fit. Same result. Now to find the location to mount the bracket on the Canyon. The first spot was on the handle bar stem but the Canyon uses the H31 aero bars and the strap to hold the bracket wasn’t long enough to go around. Next I tried attaching the bracket to the arm of the outfront computer mount but I had to shift the computer mount forward to make space for the mic bracket. But that position blocked the computer screen. The final spot was on the handle bar left of the stem. The light bracket tightening strap was long enough and held it firmly. The mic is directional so it needed to aim up towards my head. I adjusted the light bracket by pushing it forward and the mic tilled up but not exactly where I wanted but close. Because the dead cat wind muff is big I opted to use the foam muff for today’s ride. Tomorrow I will use the dead cat muff. The sound is okay but not much better than the lapel mic I used yesterday, (check the video). Photos of today’s setup.

The ride started at 11:23 AM as I rolled out on my Canyon Endurace bike. The route: “Atascocita South – Walden – FM 2100”. This is the first time to ride this specific route though I biked it’s close brother “Atascocita South – Walden – Huffman” 9 times this year before the road construction along FM 2100 caused me to modify it to avoid riding north to Huffman.

Warm and humid weather continued to hang around with last week’s chilly mornings almost forgotten. I wore an almost too warm kit that turned out to be okay when the sun hid behind clouds while riding in the shade. What I wore: shorts, long sleeve jersey, a short sleeve jersey. What is was like at the 11:23 AM start and 1:51 PM finish: start 77 (91% humidity, 74.2 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind variable 4 mph; finish 81 (7% humidity, 72.1 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind N 0 mph. The humidity made for muggy biking. This kind of weather probably will hang around until Sunday.

With today’s 33.1 miles my total for the week is 70.49 miles. Before the ride I needed 120 miles to reach my November goal. Now I am in double digit remaining territory at 86 miles to go.

No segment awards on today’s ride from Strava which said the ride was consistent with my usual effort.

No significant climbing on today’s route as RideWithGPS shows with this map.

4 Strava Segment Records – Spring Creek Greenway Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on November 9, 2020 by Rick AnkrumNovember 9, 2020

I started today’s bike ride at 10:03 AM without being slowed watching the Vuelta a Espana which ended yesterday. The somewhat early start time gave me the idea to ride the Spring Creek Greenway for the first time in November. I decided to ride just to John Pundt Park on the greenway and ended up biking 37.39 miles. A good start for the week and boosting my month to date miles to 240.96, only 120 short of the 360 mile goal for November. Year to date I am at 8,417 miles (road plus Zwift). This the most miles I ever rode in a year and more time left in 2020. I finished the ride at 1:09 PM, 3 hours and 6 minutes after I started. Out of that time I rode 2:49:07. This was the 10th time biking the greenway in 2020. 8 times on my Lynskey R300 and 2 times on my Canyon Endurace.

The Indian Summer weather continued from the weekend: start 77 (87% humidity, 72.6 dew point), overcast, wind SE 12 mph; finish 83 (70% humidity, 72.5 dew point), partly cloudy, wind SE 8 mph. One of the nice things about riding the greenway is the abundance of shade and wind break from all of the trees. The wind wasn’t strong today though. I did wear a long sleeve jersey under a short sleeve one for some reason.

Biking the greenway is different from the road. The are no stops unless I take one which I did once I reached Pundt Park to eat a Clif Bar before making the turn to head back to US59 and Kingwood. No stops means no rest like stopping for traffic lights and stop signs which give my legs a recovery time. Another difference is the many turns and few straight sections. For me top speed is 15 to 16 mph but other cyclists appear to go faster, or at least they look faster.

46% of the riding time I rode in power zones 3 through 7 according to the bike ride data summary from Golden Cheetah. 12% came in zones 6 and 7 of the 46%. That is higher than normal.

Strava recorded 4 awards on ride segments: a second fastest time, two 3rd fastest times, and a local legend on another. I was not expecting them but I did ride at a steady pace and Strava says harder than my usual efforts.

Thanking Texas’ little heroes

Red, White and Bike initiative sets roots in Huntsville

For every enlisted hero, is a family at home just as equally called to duty.

One local non-profit is aiming to honor the children whose lives have been turned upside down from a loved one’s sacrifice for their country.

Operation Red, White and Bike was started 12 years ago with a mission of bringing joy to the lives of the overlooked children of Purple Hearts veterans and to recognize them for their unique service.

“They learned that their father or their mother has either been killed or wounded in combat and we’re recognizing these children for the sacrifice that they’ve made,” Operation Red, White and Bike co-founder Larry Reid said. “My idea was that …

Valley’s consolidated MPO already producing benefits

The Monitor Editorial Board | www.themonitor.com

The first year for the Rio Grande Valley’s MPO has been an auspicious one indeed.

The Metropolitan Planning Organization, which is the merger of three separate Valley entities, embodies a regional approach to infrastructure and transportation planning for South Texas, and it already has garnered the top award from the national Association of Metropolitan Planning Organizations.

The AMPO awarded the new Valley group the Outstanding Transportation Management Award for its efforts to facilitate mobility in the region. The national group oversees more than 300 MPOs nationwide and their mobility projects ranging from airports to walking and cycling trails.

MPOs were mandated in the …
