About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Austin, Texas, just voted to spend $7 billion on a transportation revolution

BY ADELE PETERS | www.fastcompany.com

Austin, Texas, where drivers spend an average of 104 hours stuck in traffic each year, is a city built around the car. But after passing two new propositions, the city now plans to invest more than $7 billion in a new transit system, and another $460 million in new infrastructure centered on walking and biking.

“There were three main arguments that were made,” says Austin mayor Steve Adler. “One was congestion. One was climate change. One was mobility equity in our city.”

The city’s new transit plan, called Project Connect, will build a new rail system with 31 stations, four new rapid bus routes, new …

The Sounds of Cycling

A DUDE ABIKES | adudeabikes.com

Gearheads have the roar of their engines. Racquet sports people have their thwack. Footballers have their punt, kick, and all the hitting, yelling, and grunting. Riding a bicycle involves making a variety of sounds. Here are some that come to mind.

Tires. Motorized vehicles have this, too. But they aren’t generating the power on their own, and it’s competing with the engine and other sounds. Biking brings you close to the road and depending on your tires, they will make a sound as you roll. At higher speeds, it’s almost like a singing sound. I think it’s …

Port Aurthur, Texas

ridingmilford.com

After Gettysburg, I was home for 2 days, then I shoved off to Milwaukee. After 6 days, I headed to Port Arthur, Texas for 2 weeks. Port Arthur is in the southeast corner of Texas. Although it’s near the Gulf Coast, access to the water is limited, as industry occupies much of the land near the coast. Most people work at the many oil refineries throughout southeast Texas and southwest Louisiana …

High Spot On The Overpass, Liberty Chip Seal, Longer Than I Guessed

Texbiker.net Posted on November 5, 2020 by Rick AnkrumNovember 5, 2020

Last night I started thinking about a different route for today’s bike ride. One that came to mind went south and then east on FM 1960 to the railroad overpass about 2 miles into Liberty County and then back to Kingwood. I rode all of these streets and roads in the past but not this combination this year. August 20th of this year I rode FM 1960 east over the railroad to FM 686 and retraced my route back along FM 1960. Today after turning around on top of the railroad overpass heading west on FM 1960 I turned onto Huffman Eastgate Road. It has been a number of years since I took Huffman Eastgate all the way to FM 2100 rather turning right to go to May Community Center. The last time on Huffman Eastgate I encountered a dog and sprinted to escape him. No repeat of that today.

FM 1960 in Liberty County has chip seal shoulders. I wondered how the ride would be on my Lynskey R300 since I changed to 700x32mm tires with 80 psi. The ride on the chip seal was not too harsh, less jarring than on my Canyon Endurace with 700x28mm tires at 85 psi.

Searching my past rides in SportTracks I couldn’t find a route matching today so I created a new one “Kingwood to FM1960 Railroad Overpass – Back”. As I rolled out at 11:23 AM on my Lynskey R300 bike I guessed the ride would be 34 to 35 miles but it turned out to be 39.32 miles. That pushed me forward towards my monthly goal 3 days worth.

11-5-2020 MTD Mileage Goal Status

With the good outdoor riding weather my Zwift goal is being ignored. That probably will change later in November. The blue sky gained numerous clouds today but it warmed up. My kit: shorts, long sleeve jersey, and a short sleeve jersey. A few times when the sun hid behind some clouds I felt a chill but overall it was a good choice. Weather: start 79 (63% humidity, 64.9 dew point), partly cloudy, wind SE 10 mph; finish 80 (58% humidity, 63.6 dew point), partly cloudy, wind S 8 mph. The humidity and dew point continued to climb higher pushing the muggy feeling and temperature up. The wind treated me okay today with minimal headwinds. Riding mostly east and west positioned the wind crossing my path.

The experiment with the Koozie on the Hero 7 Silver camera came to an end. After taking 2 clips the camera wouldn’t turn on until I removed the Koozie. Back to the sock to muffle the wind noise. The replacement mic adapter should arrive early next week. I neck muscles will appreciate not holding up the extra weight on my helmet. By the 2:20 PM finish my neck felt strained.

Strava evaluated the ride as harder than my usual efforts while Golden Cheetah summary data showed only 47% of the ride time my power was in zones 3 through 7. Lap 6 average power was 120 watts slightly above lap 5’s 118 watts. Overall average speed topped out at 14.0 mph, below yesterday’s. Lap 4’s 15.4 mph average speed was the best of 8 laps.

The Pre-Ride Checklist, Koozie Muff, Overcoming The Headwind

Texbiker.net Posted on November 4, 2020 by Rick AnkrumNovember 4, 2020

After watching stage 14 of the Vuelta a Espana this morning I got ready for today’s bike ride. I rode to the south yesterday so today I chose a northerly route, “New Caney – Tavola – Valley Ranch”. I thought the distance would be 34 miles but turned out to be 35.32 miles, increasing November’s total to 99.91 miles. I should’ve went a tenth of a mile farther but I didn’t know that until after the 1:59 PM finish. Today was the 25th time biking this route in 2020, 21 times on my Canyon Endurace and 4 times on my Lynskey R300.

As I got ready for the departure I check my GoPro Hero 7 Black battery and it was a good thing I did because it was dead for some reason. I charged it after yesterday’s ride. I removed the camera from my helmet mount, pealed the foam windshield off and but another battery in. Now I had a full battery. I all of this without removing my helmet and when I remounted the camera to the helmet mount I thought the holes aligned and I tightened the bolt. It wasn’t until after the ride when I started to remove the camera that I discovered the camera frame didn’t line up and the bolt just squeezed the tabs. If I shook my head or hit a hard bump the camera might have fallen. Maybe the foam windshield would’ve absorbed the hit. Next time I will remove my helmet and not rely on feeling the attaching action.

With the battery changed I rolled out the driveway on my Canyon Endurace at 11:18 AM. The temperature encouraged me to change my kit. I wore shorts, a short sleeve jersey, and a windbreaker jacket. Just a few clouds meant the sunshine warmed me as I rode and the shade didn’t chill me like yesterday. Weather: start 74 (57% humidity, 58.3 dew point), a few clouds, wind E 8 mph; finish 77 (53% humidity, 58.7 dew point), partly cloudy, wind SE 13 mph. The humidity and dew point increased significantly from yesterday’s unusually low numbers.

Riding north the wind helped me keep my speed in the 17 to 19 mph range but the return trip to Kingwood was into the 13 mph headwind. When I made the turn to the south at Roman Forest Blvd. I expected the headwind to exact a toll on my 14.4 mph average speed but I added to it and upped it to 14.6 mph which I held until entering Kingwood where I slowed for stops and greenbelt surfaces. Strava reported today’s ride was harder than my usual efforts which I agreed with after battling the headwind.

Last evening I noticed a Koozie sitting on the counter and wondered if it would be a windshield for my Hero 7 Silver camera. I went to my stock of Koozie’s and found one that was snug around the camera. I cut it to size and used it on the ride today. The beginning of the video was shot with the Hero 7 Silver and Koozie. Later in the ride I tried to record a clip in the wind to test the Koozie but the camera wouldn’t turn on but after the ride it turned on. Not sure what the problem was but I will test the Koozie tomorrow.

Power output during the ride according to Golden Cheetah bike ride data summary shows 54% of the riding time I was in zones 3 through 7, and increase over yesterday.
