About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Deadly crashes in Austin ticking upward despite traffic volume being down

by Melanie Torre | cbsaustin.com

AUSTIN, Texas — There have been three fatal crashes in Austin this week and traffic deaths are up citywide. It’s a concerning statistic considering fewer people are commuting to work and school this year. Now TxDOT is launching a new campaign focused on bicycle and pedestrian awareness to try and stop a deadly streak.

It’s been twenty years since the last time Texas went an entire day without someone dying in a crash. This spring and summer safety advocates expected traffic deaths to decrease due to …

Two New Components, New Video Style, Biking Toward A 200 Mile Week

Texbiker.net Posted on October 22, 2020 by Rick AnkrumOctober 22, 2020

Two new pieces of equipment on today’s bike ride: new tires for my Lynskey R300, and new cleats on my Sidi shoes. The Continental Gatorskin 700×32 tires replace the Kenda Valkyrie Elite ones that came with the bike. The Kenda tires had a hard life lately with a cut sidewall and screw puncture. The new cleats weren’t planned but after looking at the old ones I decided not to switch them because the right cleat was worn thin. At the start of the ride I noticed the cleats moved freely in the 6 degree range as expected. The new tires felt good and hugged the road tightly (ha, ha). I aired them to 80 psi making bumps not so harsh. Maybe the extra 2mm of width makes a difference?

I began the ride at 11:27 AM after watching the Giro d’Italia stage 18 and stage 3 of the Vuelta a Espana. Both went up some steep mountains that thankfully don’t exist around here. I am a flatlander. The concluded at 1:49 PM after I biked 31.46 miles. My week total is now 139.65 miles, getting closer to the 200 mile point. After reaching my October goal yesterday these miles add to my total. Year to date I am now at 8,006 miles adding road and Zwift miles together.

10-22-2020 MTD Mileage Goal Status

I changed the video style using two cameras. The Hero 7 Silver mounted out front and below the Bolt computer recorded longer portions of the ride. I used the hero 7 Black for ride introduction clip. I may switch the cameras around. After the ride I changed to a different editing program, Garmin ViRB Edit, adding ride data overlay from the FIT file the Bolt computer creates. At the end of the video I added the Relive.cc ride map animation clip. Add some titles, longer video and viola, a new recipe.

Fall weather predominated during the ride with mid 80’s temperature, light wind and some sun. I can tell it’s fall at the end of the ride because my CamelBak still contains some ice. Weather at the start and finish: start 84 (79% humidity, 77 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind SE 10 mph; finish 85 (72% humidity, 74.6 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind E 8 mph.

Mission Tour de Goliad, Goliad, Texas, October 17, 2020

Roy and Christine | roy-pedalpushers.blogspot.com

A good number of riders turned out for this event.

… Now the first photo of the 1st rest stop begs a little explanation. First, it was a mass start and the crowd did not thin our for a long distance. And I do not take pictures if there is a possible danger to me or someone else. Second, face it; the roads were so rough that I couldn’t take a hand off the handle bar even if I were in the clear. Missed a lot of good shots of climbs. …

A DUDE ABIKES | adudeabikes.com

In my last post, Muscles, Might & Math Mean More Miles, I touched on how numbers help motivate me to achieve my bicycling goals. As it turns out, the last seven days I’ve ridden an average of 21.25 miles per day, from 20.5-22.2 miles. And I did that because of the math, which then went from my brain to my legs. Sophie the sea foam-colored Fairdale Weekender Archer got the …

Goal! Reached October’s Miles In Pleasant Fall Weather

Texbiker.net Posted on October 21, 2020 by Rick AnkrumOctober 21, 2020

21 days into October biking and today I reached my 615 mile goal while riding the “New Caney – Tavola – Valley Ranch” route on my Canyon Endurace bike. The ride traveled 36.43 miles pushing the week’s total to 108.19 miles and the to 619.92 miles. This leaves 10 days to add to October’s miles.

10-21-2020 MTD Mileage Goal Status

Daily average miles including the days I did not ride: 29.52 miles, almost 10 miles per day above what I needed to ride to reach my goal.

No flat tire on today’s bike ride. After yesterday’s bike ride I changed the tires on my Lynskey R300 from Kenda Valkyrie Elite 700×30 to Continental Gatorskin 700×32. The Gatorskin tires handle the road debris on the shoulders with almost no flats and ride 7,000+ miles in my experience. The Kenda tires had 2,567 miles on them. I found the solution to the rear thru-axle drive side nut falling out: a tiny setscrew holds the nut in place and tightening it a couple of turns secured the axle nut. After today’s ride I will switch the cleats on my Sidi road shoes to even the wear.

Weather during the ride reflected the a weak front passing through and fall temperatures. Wind wasn’t too strong allowing me to hit 14.6 mph average speed once I left Roman Forest heading to Valley Ranch and then Kingwood. What the weather numbers showed: start 81 (52% humidity, 61.8 dew point), fair, wind W 7 mph. Finish 85 (44% humidity, 60.7 dew point), fair, wind NW 4 mph. Shorts, short sleeve jersey, and arm sleeves worked well.

Looking at the ride data summary from Golden Cheetah, I spent 57% of the ride in power zones 2, 3, 4, and 5. 5% in zone 6 Anaerobic is more than usual yet Strava labeled the ride consistent with my usual efforts. The Golden Cheetah data:

  • 10-21-2020 Golden Cheetah Bike Ride Data-1
  • 10-21-2020 Golden Cheetah Bike Ride Data-2

Not many segments in Strava lined up with my route. There a number of partial matches on segments.
