Local businesses host fundraisers for fire department

SALADO, Texas (KWTX) – An Oktoberfest bike ride and a fall festival in Salado Saturday both raised money to help the Salado Volunteer Fire Department.

Barrow Brewing Company typically hosts a robust Oktoberfest celebration. The company had to cancel the event this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Instead they opted to do a fundraiser bike ride.

The organizer of the ride, Berta Davis, said 250 people participated in the ride raising about $12,000 for the department.

New Power Pedals, 200 Mile Week

The goal for today’s bike ride: cover at least 15 miles to make it a 200 mile week. That goal succeeded with 26.58 miles as I rode my Lynskey R300 bike on what I call the “Oakhurst – Valley Ranch” route. The actual total for the week is 212.11 miles after coming in below 200 miles last week.

Weather conditions warmed up from yesterday’s start to the mid 80’s. Wind picked up from the start bringing gusts into play. No cold weather clothing needed. Weather for the ride: start 84 (75% humidity, 75.4 dew point), partly cloudy, wind S 10 mph. Finish 84 (73% humidity, 74.8 dew point), partly cloudy, wind SE 15 mph gusts 18 mph. Out on the road I thought the wind felt stronger but maybe the change in direction accounted for it.

New equipment on today’s bike ride: Favero Assiomo Uno power meter pedals. I thought they were setup but power was not showing on my Wahoo bolt computer a few hundred yards into the ride. Checking the Bolt I failed to calibrate the pedals to the computer. After several attempts to calibrate it completed. From that point power readings appeared in the Bolt screen. Now I wear the same Sidi shoes on the Lynskey and Canyon bikes.

Moving closer to my goal for the month. Only 104 miles to go. If the weather lets me there may be the opportunity to exceed the goal. Year to date my road miles are at 7,325.

The North Central Texas Council of Governments welcomes public input on funding for a planned bicycle-pedestrian project and other transportation initiatives in the Dallas-Fort-Worth region.

NCTCOG staff will post a presentation on the Cotton Belt Trail design funding and planning efforts at nctcog.org/input. This project is in coordination with the Dallas Area Rapid Transit Silver Line commuter rail project.

My latest park adventure was a bit of a departure. When I look for parks, I try to find remote destinations that could be a day excursion. But this week, my boyfriend had an appointment in Arlington to get fingerprinted.

3 Degrees Above The Threshold, Sweating Later

No early start on today’s Saturday bike ride. I waited for the temperature to warm up watching the stage 14 Giro d’Italia time trial. It looked warmer there. I decided the temperature was going to take too long to get to 70 degrees so I bundled up with shorts, leg warmers, long sleeve thermal jersey and wind jacket. After yesterday’s rain I didn’t want to miss another riding day and the opportunity to make this a 200 mile week. At 10:46 AM I pressed the start button on the Wahoo Bolt as I rode the Canyon Endurace bike to begin the “Atascocita – FM 2100 – Walden” route. The ride covered 31.55 miles by the1:10 PM finish time. My week total stands at 185.53 miles. The weather tomorrow (Sunday) should be warmer especially since the ride will start after church.

Today was the 6th time riding today’s route. Construction at FM 2100 shows progress with concrete poured south of Old Atascocita Road. Rebar is in place for more concrete pour west of the new concrete.

Yesterday while it rained I installed a new pair of Favero Assiomo Uno power meter pedals on my Lynskey R300. This will replace my PowerPod. The PowerPod collects interesting data but the setup can be troublesome and to download the data from the PowerPod requires me to remove it from the bike and take it to my computer. The Isaac program only runs on MacOS and Windows but my main computer is a Chromebook.

The chilly weather (by my definition) warmed up as I rode making my attire out of step. But I didn’t remove anything and sweated through to the end. The clouds broke up and sun shined down. I do think in cool weather I ride harder and put out more watts. Strava backed me up stating, “This was harder than your usual effort.” Weather conditions: start 63 (85% humidity, 58.5 dew point), overcast, wind E 7 mph. Finish 77 (79% humidity, 70 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind SE 16 mph.

My month mileage goal didn’t suffer too much from the day off. I am still ahead of the pace to get there. So far missing 3 days has not jeopardized reaching the goal. 135 miles to go.
