About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Absent Over 5 Years On Today’s Route – Bike Ride to Liberty County

Texbiker.net Posted on October 15, 2020 by Rick AnkrumOctober 15, 2020

Before today’s bike ride I was thinking of routes I haven’t rode in a long time and today’s route came to mind. The last time I rode the “Huffman – Liberty County Line” route was May 26th, 2015. Some of the roads on this route are in other routes I ride but this particular combination has been absent for over 5 years. Checking ride history in SportTracks I found 7 bike rides dating back to 2011 on this route with the typical mileage of 35 miles. Today I altered the route to go by May Community Center on Wolf Road and the distance was 37.83 miles. These miles pushed the week’s total to 153.98 miles.

A tailwind assisted me riding to the Liberty county line and my average speed settled in at 14.1 mph. Getting back to Kingwood the tailwind became a headwind but I maintained my average speed until I neared the finish.

Starting the bike ride at 11:14 AM the temperature was warm enough for a short sleeve jersey and arm sleeves. My arm sleeves are starting to show some wear and tear so when the weather cools down to thermal jersey levels the arm sleeves will retire. I have a new pair waiting. The wind did let up some by the 2:03 PM finish. Weather conditions overall: start 83 (78% humidity, 75 dew point), partly cloudy, wind S 10 mph gusts 17 mph. Finish 86 (69% humidity, 74.6 dew point), partly cloudy, wind N calm.

How I look on my month’s mileage goal.

On third try, Houston makes it illegal to block city bike lanes

Council voted 15-2 to pass an ordinance to forbid people from blocking the dedicated lanes that are physically separated from roadways. The prohibition applies to 120 miles of bike lanes, and violations will be …

Tips for Becoming a Cyclist

BY WILLIAM GONZABA | www.sanantoniomag.com

An experienced San Antonio cyclist offers ideas for how to get into the sport, how to take care of your bike and where to get started when you ride

The Alamo City is experiencing a major bike boom. The rush to get outside on two wheels started when the initial “stay home” orders were issued in March, continued as gyms and fitness studios were closed temporarily and is a hobby that has stuck as residents seek new ways of staying fit—and getting out of the house—during the COVID-19 pandemic. As an experienced cyclist, I am thrilled to see more people on bicycles enjoying our beautiful city. San Antonio has wonderful and ever-improving …
