About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Tour de Texas: Why I’m Cycling the 3,000-Mile Perimeter of the State

By Aaron Chamberlain | www.texasmonthly.com

There’s really no good reason to do what I am doing, riding around the entire state of Texas on my bike. Last year I rode my bike on every street in Austin, and as I was finishing that 385-day, 4,900-mile project, my mind started to wander to the next challenge. That’s when the idea to circumnavigate Texas came to me. I started doing research on which decent roads I could ride to get closest to the boundaries of the state. As far as I can tell, this has never been done before. Of course it hasn’t been done. It’s insane. The journey will take a little under two months and cover 3,046 miles. I’ve lived in Texas for twelve years and have spent most of that time in Austin and the …

San Antonio is asking you where to put new bike lanes

Bruce Selcraig | www.expressnews.com

A bicyclist rides on the sidewalk along Broadway on Wednesday. The city is embarking on a new survey of all residents (not just bike riders) to see where it should build the next bike lanes, looking for up to six top picks from 21 possible corridors.

A decade ago, a national survey of urban bicycling put San Antonio among the bottom third of the 50 largest U.S. cities in such benchmarks as fatalities per capita, miles of bike lanes and the share of the population who bike to work — for this city, a measly one-tenth of 1 percent.

Today, dozens of miles of bike lanes have been added and a city bike/pedestrian czar (“pedestrian mobility engineer”) has been on the job a …

Bill Sherry

www.gonzalesinquirer.com

On Sept. 5, 2020, our family lost our parent, grandparent and friend Bill Sherry. Bill was a man who made his own way in life and was an icon for his children and grandchildren. Bill was originally from Gonzales, Texas, married his sweetheart, Sharlene (Smith) Sherry, in 1955. After following many oil field jobs, Bill and Sharlene settled in Devine, Texas, in 1962. They purchased their first and forever home in the center of Devine on Tuttle Drive.

Bill Sherry was an oil field worker, a rancher, and land/property manager. He was known as the man riding his bicycle for exercise or the man sitting on his beloved patio watching the town go by. He enjoyed his many mornings at Charlies II’s having coffee with friends and before heading out to tend to his cattle. He also loved viewing the deer, turkeys and hogs in the Devine area known as the Blackjacks. …

Stalled Cold Front, Better With New Computer

Texbiker.net Posted on September 10, 2020 by Rick AnkrumSeptember 10, 2020

As predicted the approaching cold front stalled to the west of Houston but it still affected the Houston area. When I began today’s bike ride at 11:11 AM it was 84 degrees. Not a cold front but several degrees lower than earlier in the week. I still perspired a lot during the bike ride. I rode my Canyon Endurace bike on the “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” route for a total of 34.25 miles. This boosted my week total to 145.24 miles leaving 55 miles to reach 200 for the week.

I felt much better using the new Lezyne Macro Plus bike computer today. After rolling out of the driveway it started recording the ride without me pushing any buttons (I set it for auto start). Changing the 2nd screen showed the averages the first screen didn’t have room for. When I stop it takes about 10 seconds for the computer to flash “paused” on the screen but when starting back up it takes 2 to 3 seconds to show “resuming”. I thought I enabled “Lezyne Tracking” but after the ride I learned that the enable button wasn’t clicked. Work flow after the ride is different from using a Wahoo Bolt computer but not difficult. Lezyne doesn’t auto upload to as many of the websites as the Bolt.

Weather: start 84 (84% humidity, 78.3 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind NW 8 mph. Finish 91 (71% humidity, 80.3 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind N 10 mph. I still use the CamelBak for water and the cold water taste good.

Monthly goal status.

9-10-2020 MTD Mileage Goal Status

At this point I am 3 days ahead of schedule with only 1 day not biking.

Construction Begins on Key Buffalo Bayou Trail Connection

Buffalo Bayou Partnership

Houston Parks Board and Buffalo Bayou Partnership, in cooperation with the Downtown Redevelopment Authority, the City of Houston, and the Houston Parks and Recreation Department, have begun construction on a new park and 0.4-mile hike and bike trail along Buffalo Bayou from Fannin Street to McKee Street. When complete, this segment will tie directly into the proposed Austin Street Bikeway and provide important connections to Buffalo Bayou Park and to trails east of downtown.

The trail will begin at Allen’s Landing Park and continue east under the Fannin Street Bridge, transverse up the slope along Commerce Street before passing under the San Jacinto Bridge to the Wilson Building on Commerce Street. The …

Wrap My Head Around New Computer – Bike Ride to SH242

Texbiker.net Posted on September 9, 2020 by Rick AnkrumSeptember 9, 2020

After watching stage 3 of the 2020 Tirreno Adriatico race and stage 11 of the Tour de France I decided it was my turn to be on the bike. I saddled up my Canyon Endurace bike with my new Lezyne Macro Plus bike computer and set out on the “Kingwood – SH 242 – Kingwood” route at 11:31 AM. I rode 37.24 miles pushing my week’s total to 110.99 miles. For some reason I thought the number was going to be lower. This positions me to ride 200 miles this week if the weather holds.

While the forecast said rain was not likely the sky showed otherwise as you can see in the video. The clouds held the temperature just below 90. The wind was strong at the start from a tailwind direction and by the time I finished at 2:41 PM it dropped down to 5 mph. What the weather looked liked: start 89 (63% humidity, 75 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind SE 15 mph gusts 21 mph. Finish 89 (68% humidity, 76.7 dew point), Clouds, wind N 5 mph. While I enjoyed the tailwind on the way to SH 242 I dreaded the return ride to the south but the wind slowed before I made the turn to the south.

Getting used to a new bike computer is not easy for me, at least. After using a Wahoo Element for 5 plus years and then switching to another brand I had a problem pushing the correct buttons at the start of the ride. I pushed what I thought would start the Macro Plus but watching the screen the speed and distance stayed at zero. I circled back home, opened the Lezyne app on my phone to check the settings. Everything looked correct. I started the ride again pushing the buttons in the order and then the speed and distance reported movement. At the end of the ride I remembered which button to push and saved the ride data. It uploaded to Strava and Relive. I connected the Macro Plus to my computer and downloaded the ride file. Success. I need to configure the second screen page since the first page doesn’t have enough spaces for what I like to see. The Macro Plus uses a different mount from the Wahoo but fortunately the mount on the Canyon Endurace included an insert for Lezyne computers.

The sound on the video is not very good so I will go back to using the mic adapter and lapel mic with the Hero 7 Black. On my Canyon I will mount the camera below the computer. The Hero 7 silver will be my handheld camera again.

My monthly goal mileage improved and now I am 63.81 miles ahead of the minimum pace. How it looks with today’s bike ride.

9-9-2020 MTD Mileage Goal Status

Not many segments on today’s route according to Strava. I must be the only biker going that way. I will need to add some.
