About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Inspired To Ride Some Hills and Mountains, Oh Wait …

Texbiker.net Posted on September 15, 2020 by Rick AnkrumSeptember 15, 2020

After watching stage 16 of the Tour de France this morning it inspired me to ride some hills and mountains. Oh wait, Houston has no hills or mountains. So I settled for riding the “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” route for 34.28 miles, a whole lot less than stage 16. My week total stands at 77.13 miles.

Weather during the ride was in the low to mid 90’s but the low humidity and dew point made it feel slightly cooler. I still managed to get salt deposits on my bike shorts and arm sleeves though. Weather at the 11:29 AM start and 2:08 PM finish: start 90 (68% humidity, 78 dew point), a few clouds, wind NE 6 mph. Finish 94 (55% humidity, 75.4 dew point), partly cloudy, wind NE 12 mph. Generally the wind wasn’t a problem except biking across Lake Houston headed east.

My assault on reaching my monthly goal of 700 miles continued. Now over 100 miles ahead of the minimum pace puts me in a good place but “don’t count your chickens before they hatch”.

My Bolt computer arrived at Wahoo today and they are processing the warranty replacement. In the meantime I am getting better acquainted with it’s back up, the Lezyne Macro Plus computer. The live track works nicely and appears to be more consistent than Wahoo’s version. I am not sure about the power readings though. I will do some research.

Houston’s Bike Share Launches New Recreational Network In Northeast Harris County

Gail Delaughter | www.houstonpublicmedia.org

The mini-network includes two bike share kiosks with two more on the way. The bike share nonprofit says ridership has been positive so far.

Most of Houston’s BCycle network is designed so riders can easily get from one bike kiosk to another. They can then ride through a larger part of the city or use a bike to get to a transit stop.

But a new mini-network in Alexander Deussen Park is designed primarily for recreation. …

Into A Sally Headwind, Back With A Sally Tailwind

Texbiker.net Posted on September 14, 2020 by Rick AnkrumSeptember 14, 2020

I followed one of my rules on today’s bike ride to Splendora; ride into the wind to enjoy the tailwind on the ride back. The route was ” Kingwood – Splendora – Kingwood” headed north. The wind was from the NE at 13 mph presenting a headwind most of the to Splendora but a nice tailwind from there back to Kingwood. I started riding at 10:15 AM on my Canyon Endurace ending up biking 42.85 miles. This gets the week off to a good start for a 200 mile week.

The last time I rode this route was August 3rd on my Lynskey R300 bike. With today’s bike ride this marks the 7th time this year, 5 times on my Lynskey and 2 times on my Canyon Endurace.

Tropical Storm Sally caused the wind out of the northeast while she sits out in the northern Gulf of Mexico before coming ashore tomorrow or Wednesday along the Louisiana to Alabama cost. With overcast sky the temperature at the start held at 80 and reached 88 when I finished at 1:31 PM. The wind increased to 15 mph by the end of the ride propelling me south with reduced pedaling effort. Humidity showed no mercy though and the dew point wasn’t far from the temperature making for a muggy bike ride.

Some ride data:

  • heart rate average 126 bpm, maximum 148 bpm
  • cadence average 73 rpm, maximum 95 rpm
  • power output average 54 watts, maximum 217 watts
  • moving time 3:04:05, total time 3:15:43

After taking Sunday off to rest, when I got home from church I watch the two big bike races, Tirreno Adriatico and the Tour de France. This ate into my miles ahead for reaching my monthly goal but I still have a lead over where I need to be by 91.9 miles.
