About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

September Turning Up The Heat – Bike Ride to Cumberland

Texbiker.net Posted on September 2, 2020 by Rick AnkrumSeptember 2, 2020

Another late start for today’s bike ride after watching stage 5 of the Tour de France. By the time I got ready and rolled my Canyon Endurace to the end of the driveway it was 11:06 AM. This gave the weather time to heat it up properly to 95 degrees.

For some route variety I chose the “Oakhurst – Cumberland – Valley Ranch” route. While watching the tour I visualized today’s ride wanting to ride at 33 miles. My visualization was pretty good as the ride went 33.54 miles. Those miles position me to reach 200 miles for the week if the weather cooperates with 111.4 miles so far. This was the second time riding this route in 2020, both on my Canyon Endurace bike. After two days of biking in September my progress on reaching my goal is on tracks. Where I stand.

9-2-2020 MTD Mileage Goal Status

It’s still early in the month but I am not behind like I was at this point in August.

No heat advisory today but it was still hot and windy. Weather at the start and 1:46 PM finish: start 95 (63% humidity, 80.0 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind S 12 mph gusts 23 mph. Finish 99 (48% humidity, 75.6 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind SW 13 mph gusts 23 mph. The wind was tough on my legs. Fortunately today’s route changed direction several times shifting the wind attack on me.

Strava evaluated my bike ride telling me it was consistent with my usual efforts. No rest stop today reducing my overall time to 2:39:51. After the ride I think my stomach wanted something to eat, like hurry!

Austin cyclist rides more than 300 miles to raise money for fighting children’s cancer

by: Todd Bailey | www.kxan.com

AUSTIN (KXAN) — “She was just like, ‘Get a mohawk. I’ll approve a mohawk for a week.’ And I’m like, ‘why not?’“

Local cyclist Gene Vergara’s boss came up with the idea. He’ll style it when he reaches $1,000 in donations. Currently, his shaggy hair provides a little extra padding underneath his bike helmet, but it’s not conducive to a Texas summer.

“This heat right now, it’s brutal. Hopefully it comes off soon,” he said.

He’s looking forward to that …

August Weather, Convection Oven Style

Texbiker.net Posted on September 1, 2020 by Rick AnkrumSeptember 1, 2020

September biking got off to a hot start. I rolled my Canyon Endurace bike out the driveway at 11:20 AM headed for the”Kingwood to Ramsey Road – Huffman” route. I biked 36.84 miles putting me ahead of the pace needed to reach my 700 mile goal for September. I need to ride 23.34 miles each day and unlike August when I didn’t ride the first day and got behind quickly I am ahead for now. Once I get behind it requires extra effort to catch up.

I am making progress for the week too with 77.86 miles so far. If watching the Tour de France before going on my bike ride doesn’t inhibit me too much I can reach 200 miles for the week.

It may be a new month but August weather is still with us. 92 degrees at the start made it feel like a sauna and it went up from there to 97 when I finished at 2:26 PM. What it was like: start 92 (68% humidity, 80.2 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind S 12 mph. Finish 97 (56% humidity, 79.1 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind S 8 mph gusts 17 mph. At the rest stop was the first time the wind felt good. I stood in the shade eating a Clif Bar drinking cold water from my CamelBak.

In 2020 I biked today’s route 9 times, 6 on my Canyon Endurace and 3 times on my Lynskey R300. The last time was on August 13th and the first time this year was March 14th. A summary of the rides.

38th Annual Moonlight Cruise Sat night/Sun morn, 2020-09-06 2:00 AM

dougmc | bicycleaustin.info

The date for the 38th Annual Moonlight Cruise is approaching … this coming Saturday night, with the ride itself starting (wheels down) at around Sunday morning, 2020-09-06 02:15 CDT, starting at the middle of the James Pfluger pedestrian bridge, near Riverside and Lamar.

That said, with COVID-19 in full effect, the ride is not really cancelled, but … it’s toned way down. The annual ride doesn’t really have leaders per-se, just a set route that people ride, so … if somebody wants to show up and ride the route at the normal time, that would be great. (I have no idea how many might do this, but … the appropriate COVID-19 precautions would …
