About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

August Bike Rides Wrap Up, Ready For A New Month

Texbiker.net Posted on August 31, 2020 by Rick AnkrumAugust 31, 2020

I don’t like to rush time but I am glad August biking is over. The reasons: near miss by Hurricane Laura, 4 days in the hospital, and I missed reaching my mileage goal for the month.

To wrap up the month this morning my Lynskey R300 and I set off at 10:48 AM on the “New Caney – Roman Forest – Valley Ranch” route riding 41.02 miles. A good start for the week, maybe I can get back to riding 200+ miles this week. It wasn’t enough to reach my mileage goal for August though. I could’ve moved closer if I rode yesterday but when I got home from church it was almost 1 o’clock, the temperature was in the upper 90’s and I wanted to watch stage 2 of the Tour de France. Below are two images summarizing my bike riding month. The one on the left recaps my efforts to reach my 800 mile goal. The other image summarizes the 21 bike rides I did during August. The key is only riding 21 days. I rode at least 2 more I probably would’ve reached my goal.

On today’s bike ride I made good time to Roman Forest thanks to a nice 10 mph tailwind with some 23 mph gusts thrown in. I usually don’t mind the heat but today the dew point hung at 80 degrees. This keeps the evaporation cooling to a minimum while riding. After making the u-turn on Galaxy Blvd. which marked the start of the return to Kingwood the tailwind turned into a headwind that wore down my legs by the time I took a break around mile 27. The Clif Bar helped give my legs some energy but it started running out by the time I made the u-turn under US59 at Kingwood Drive. Also the cold water in my CamelBak wasn’t quite as cold and getting low. When I finished the ride at 2:23 PM there was only a little bit of water left. The cup of cold water I left on the kitchen counter before the ride was still cold and tasted good. The A/C felt good inside after the ride.

While I watched stage 3 of The Tour end this morning I made a fruit salad planning on eating some when I finished the ride, which I did.

Because of the hard work getting back to Kingwood I think Strava decided today’s bike ride was harder than my usual effort.

by: PJ Green | www.texomashomepage.com

WICHITA FALLS (KFDX/KJTL) — Thousands of bike riders, vendors and fans make their way to Wichita Falls for the annual Hotter’N Hell Hundred each year, and Aug. 27-30 marks the 39th annual event, but because of the COVID-19 pandemic riders are participating in the race virtually. Some riders are doing their virtual riders before this weekend.

“This will be my fifth year in Hotter’N Hell,” local cyclist Joan Pruitt said.

For usual HHH cyclists, Pruitt, year five is …

Talking To Linda Lou From A Lake Wichita Dam Swinging Bench

Durango Texas | durangotexas.blogspot.com

Last night rain fell in copious amounts, accompanied by a thunderous orchestra of booms, along with a bright light show.

My bike was not under the usual cover I put it under when rain is predicted. Rain was not predicted for last night, as far as I knew. So, my bike got soaked. This creates what, in the past, has been a temporary problem with the crank mechanism. Previously, when it dries out, the annoying noise goes away. This time I fear that might not happen.

I did not know my bike had a …

Mountain bike rides through cross-country tracks make for a delightful afternoon adventure. When a mountain bike trail offers more than just a ride, you know you’ve chosen the best mountain bike park.

Expedition to remote Dallas preserve ends on idyllic Bonton Farms lunch

By Stacy Breen | dallas.culturemap.com

Goat Island Preserve is what started my summer 2020 exploration of parks around Dallas. I was at the Lakewood Farmers Market, where I work at the Empire Baking Co. stand selling bread, and this woman came up and was apologizing for being sweaty. She said she’d been hiking in Goat Island, which she said was great "because nobody was there." I said, "Tell me more." My friend and I went down the very next week.

Like Post Oak Preserve in Seagoville, Goat Island is part of the system set up by Dallas County to preserve natural wildnerness areas. The street address is listed as 2800 Post Oak Rd. in Hutchins, and at 2838 Post Oak Rd., in the southeast …

… DORBA in charge In 2013, the County worked out an arrangement with the Dallas Off-Road Bicycle Association to maintain the trails; they get high marks for their mowing and helpful identifying markers.

While we were there, we coincidentally ran into Joe Johnson, the assistant trail …

9 Tips Why You Should Buy Tip Beer for Your Bicycle Mechanic

A DUDE ABIKES | adudeabikes.com

What? You’re not buying beer as a tip for your bicycle mechanics? Well, that’s a faux pas big time. If you think about it, whether you’re an amateur or avid cyclist, your bike and your life is in literally their hands. So if they’re having a shit day and you come in and dump more shit on them, guess what? The quality of your bike repair may also be quite defecatory in nature. Or not, if they’re real pros. And if you’re taking your bike to the shop, you need them. I’m not talking about a …

HH100 If 2020 Were Normal But Normal Left The Building

Texbiker.net Posted on August 29, 2020 by Rick AnkrumAugust 29, 2020

If 2020 were a normal year I would probably be in Wichita Falls today riding the Hotter’N Hell Hundred but as we all know 2020 is anything but normal. Instead I rode the “Atascocita – Huffman – Walden” route traveling 31.16 miles. This was the 15th time biking this route in 2020; 14 times on my Canyon Endurace and once on my Lynskey R300. Next time I need to ride my Lynskey. With those miles my week’s total stands at 189.87 miles, just 11 short of a 200 mile week. I am debating about riding tomorrow or not. It will be after noon by the time I get home from church and hot. Plus the Tour de France will be waiting to be watched.

The ride start a little later than I planned with the Canyon Endurace wheels rolling at 8:39 AM. I probably would’ve start earlier if I wasn’t watching the Tour de France first hour. I will watch the replay after I finish writing this. Finishing at 11:09 AM it was hotter than the start but not quite as humid. Weather at the start and finish: start 82 (99% humidity, 82.1 dew point), a few clouds, wind SE 4 mph. Finish 94 (64% humidity, 80 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind SW 9 mph. The humidity was a killer at the start and the dew point being so close to the temperature the air was heavy and it didn’t take too long for the sweat to come out. For being late summer the heat is not letting up.

As August winds down my 800 mile goal will probably be close but not reached. If I don’t ride tomorrow I will still be within double digits of close. How I stand after today’s bike ride.

8-29-2020 MTD Mileage Goal Status

I think I am almost recovered from the days off in the hospital. My overall average speed topped out at 13.9 mph and settled in at 13.7 mph. Strava reported my ride was consistent with my usual efforts. Some data from the ride:

  • average speed 13.4 mph with a mix of 20.1 mph
  • heart rate averaged 134 bpm with a max of 162 bpm
  • power averaged 102 watts with a peak of 338 watts
  • moving time 2:19:55

No changes along the route. I rode north on FM 2100 again without any problems in the construction area. I rode east of FM 2100 on Old Atascocita Road after several times because of avoiding the construction on FM 2100.
