About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Pedaling Past Progress: Observing US59 Overpass on a Familiar Route

Texbiker.net Posted on March 13, 2024 by Rick AnkrumMarch 13, 2024

I made sure to not forget my water bottle on today’s bike ride. I rode north on a route I haven’t been on since October 13th, 2023, Kingwood – SH 242 – Kingwood. It would interesting to see how the construction work on the US59 overpass progressed in the intervening months. The video shows the overpass status. I aired up the tires on my Cervelo Caledonia before starting since the rear tire felt a little low during yesterday’s ride. It turned out to be about 25 psi low from the 80 psi I prefer. The rear tire has the TPU tube I put in after the trouble patching the rubber tube. Sometimes TPU tubes lose air sooner than rubber tubes.

The ride rolled away at 12:19 PM following the Kingwood – SH 242 – Kingwood route. The last ride was 38.24 miles, a little longer than the 37.5 mile average. I knew the streets and roads but not sure where I rode to add the extra 3/4 of a mile. Today I biked 38.11 miles. Comparing today’s route with the October 13th ride I left out the loop through Tavola West but added a couple of streets in the final mile. The south wind assisted my pedaling to SH 242 and became a headwind on the way back to Kingwood. The headwind contained some 23 mph gusts affecting my pedaling. My legs felt tired by the 3:22 PM finish.

Weather: Start 74 degrees, humidity 80%, dew point 67.7, overcast, wind S 12 mph; Finish 81 degrees, humidity 70%, dew point 70.0, overcast, wind S 12 mph gusts 23 mph. It didn’t get as warm as the forecast called for and I was glad I wore a wind jacket over a long sleeve jersey riding into the headwind.

The state’s longest trail is in North Texas. And it could soon become a state park

By Emily Brindley | www.star-telegram.com

The 133-mile long Northeast Texas Trail is beloved by cyclists, runners and walkers, who say the trail is a slice of paradise and a rare gem. The trail, which is the longest in Texas, was developed through grant funding and is maintained largely by volunteers — which has meant that some sections are nearly impassable due to overgrown vegetation and collapsed bridges. Under an early stages plan, the NETT could be transformed into a linear state park and added to the state parks system. And if the property is maintained by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, some trail users hope, that could mean a better-kept and more accessible trail. Trail users who spoke to the Star-Telegram were primarily excited …

Mayor John Whitmire encourages people to participate in Tour de Houston

Cynthia Miranda | www.click2houston.com

HOUSTON – Mayor John Whitmire and the Apache Corporation had a news conference on Tuesday to discuss plans for the 17th annual Tour de Houston bike ride.

The event is presented by Apache Corporation and will be held on April 7th.

The path for the bike ride goes through different scenic communities in Houston and parks and raises funds for the city’s Re-Plant Houston Program. Apache Corporation said they have planted 450,000 trees in the city with their environmental program.

For the bike ride, there are three ride length options, and all cyclists are welcome.

The event starts at Discovery Green.

Tour de Houston date announced. Here’s how to participate

By Hana Ikramuddin | www.houstonchronicle.com

A date has been set for the 17th annual Tour de Houston. The announcement comes a few weeks after officials assured supporters the event would occur despite initial reports of its cancelation.

Around 100 people gathered Tuesday morning at Avenida Plaza where Mayor John Whitmire and Apache Corporation CEO John Christmann gave details about the event, scheduled for April 7.

Riders can choose between three distance options, including a 60-mile, 40-mile and 20-mile race, starting at staggered times as early as 7:30 a.m.

The Apache Corporation is the title sponsor of the race, which benefits the Houston Parks and Recreation Department’s Re-Plant Houston Program. The corporation’s tree …

I couldn’t decide which group to go with. At first I was going to do A, then I thought better of it. I’m trying to not lose too much fitness, but also not aggravate my pulled calf. So I went with C. However at the Jupiter intersect, I decided that I would switch over the A when they passed us. And test myself. Eddie was with me and we waited at Allen Heights. Very strong headwind on the way back south. There was a cop at the stop sign in Parker, some of us got gapped because we stopped. And also stopped again at the 2nd stop sign. The group ahead went on to Parker Rd when it turned green, and we hadn’t arrived yet. One of the members of our group suggested I call them out as poseurs for not waiting for us. I mean, I do think they should have waited.

Very strong crosswind on Parker. For the first bit of it, I didn’t have a good draft, being on the inside. Eventually I was able to capture an outside position fairly near the front and it was easy after that. Group got split up into the headwind on Murphy. Sommer got to the front with me on his wheel. Unfortunately I inhaled some of his sweat flying everywhere, but remember I’m injured, I have a hall pass (“doesn’t have to pull”) so I had no intention of pulling through at any point for anyone. John created a break kinda, but then got dropped back with me in tow. Eventually later he was the last guy to pull it together. And we caught up with the miscreants who were waiting at the 544 light. And we were all one big misfit family again, for the rest of the very windy ride down Renner Road. Calf felt okay, but I have not truly tested it with a standing sprint or anything like that. But this is a good sign.

The Forgotten Bottle: A Cyclist’s Tale on the Atascocita Roads

Texbiker.net Posted on March 12, 2024 by Rick AnkrumMarch 12, 2024

I didn’t realize until about 25 miles into the bike ride that I left my water bottle at home. After that point my thirst was on my mind. Fortunately the cool weather meant I could go the whole ride without water. When I got home I had a big drink from the forgotten water bottle. The ride began at 11:23 AM as I rolled out on my Cervelo Caledonia bike. The bike ride followed my Atascocita – Walden – Spanish Cove Drive route to the south and east. The wind was from the south at 10 mph but when I rode into the wind it seemed stronger. When I finished at 2:06 PM it had dropped to 8 mph. I saw two other cyclists on Old Atascocita Road and the Amtrak Sunset Limited train passing through Huffman. This was the 6th bike ride on the route in 2024. Strava matched it with 28 other rides.

Weather: Start 73 degrees, humidity 70%, dew point 62.4, mostly cloudy, wind S 10 mph; Finish 75 degrees, humidity 65%, dew point 62.9, overcast, wind S 8 mph.

Valley of Tears gravel brims with rich rewards for Swenson and Villafañe

By Jackie Tyson | www.cyclingnews.com

Early crashes cause chaos at inaugural Texas event, which doubled prize purse to $52,000

In the red clay hills of the Texas panhandle on Saturday, Keegan Swenson and Sofia Gomez Villafañe led the way for victories in the open categories at the inaugural Valley of Tears. It was a big day for the small town of Turkey, Texas, as both the number of people in the tiny town, estimated at 325 residents, and the prize purse, which started at $26,000 for elite athletes, doubled on race day.

At the start line, organisers of Valley of Tears announced the prize purse would expand to $52,000, and paid deeper from the top 10 to the top 20 for the men’s and women’s fields. The influx of participants for elite and …

Valley of Tears Gravel Race – Pro Men Full Race Footage

A day of everything! After a little course recon the day before, I knew the initial sand pit about 3mi into the race would be very decisive. Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately), I let my position slack a bit in order to take a clean line through the sand, and I was able to avoid the mass pile up that took out a lot of fast guys. Only about 5-6 riders were ahead of the first sand crash, and I was able to be the …

‘I rode a bike for the first time’: New Fort Worth ISD program teaches students how to ride bicycles

by Hanna Landa | fortworthreport.org

Fort Worth City Council member Jeanette Martinez had a question for kindergarteners sitting inside S.S. Dillow Elementary’s gym.

“How many of you know how to ride a bike?” Martinez asked.

Less than half of the class raised their hands.

A new program in Fort Worth ISD will change that. Fort Worth engineering firm HDR donated $360,000 to All Kids Bike, an initiative that teaches students how to …
